Default Sportsman Warehouse

I recently visited the fairly new establishment in salem called "The Sportsman Wherehouse" WOW!!!! what a great place!!! We all need to do our part to keep this store going. Massive selection, reasonable prices, and a very friendly staff. I hope you all will take a trip to Salem and see for yourself.

I5 to the Detroit Lake exit, east to first exit, left at light. The store is to the right after crossing over the highway, just south of Winco.

Have they increased their rod selection? I have only been there once, within a week of their opening, and the selection was very thin. Lots of terminal gear, but at that time they only had very high and very low priced gear with nothing in between at all.

Coming from Bend you'll be on hiway 22 as you arrive in Salem. Take the Lancaster exit and turn right at the first light you come to. You should have already seen the store by now but its in the big strip mall behind the Chevron station and Shari's restaurant.

Finally - The Sportsmans Warehouse - also known as Divorce Warehouse - This is a great chain for stores that started in Utah and has moved to ID - MT - OR - WA. I have been getting my reels filled by them for 4 years. They have great gun prices and ususally a great variety. They are the best in Utah and hopefully you folks will check out their layout.

We've had a Sportsman's Warehouse in Boise for a couple years now. I can't say enough good about them!

Prior to their arrival one family had the local market cornered with three outdoors stores in the Treasure Valley area encumpassing Boise and surrounding towns. These stores were major rip-off's and poorly stocked. It was funny to see their change, once the SW moved in - total overhaul and layout/display of their stock but they simply couldn't compete and closed their stores - good riddence!!!

I used to have to do a lot of my buying through various catalogs but that's no longer necessary [with a few exceptions] with the SW available.

I talked with one of the Managers and He said that their going to put a store in at the old HomeBase in Johnson Creek. They also sell Weatherby Rifles $100 cheaper then anyone else. Pretty amazing place, their clothing selection is also amazing. I may be headed for divorce court when they get one up here!!!

This store is like walking into the "Sportmans Show"....$1,000.000.00 woth of taxidermy, it's awesome.

They are based out of Utah and don't have a real feel for the NW yet but they have a huge selection of fishing/hunting/camping/outdoor gear/etc.will give GI Joe's & Fisherman's a run for their $ once they figure it out.

The stores are huge (This one was once a Ernst store) and they are looking at several locations in the Portland/Beaverton markets that were formerly occupied by HomeBase.

Definitely worth checking out..just my .02

Sounds like a place to check out. Some scum of the earth broke into my garage last week and relieved me of a couple of steelhead rods/reels, a trout rod/reel, my big tackle box, and my waders. Getting my rods from TH, but still have a bunch of other stuff to buy.

I agree that they are by selection one of the few places to browse. I would not say though, that thwey are wonderful. I live fairly close to them (40 minutes) and have 3 times "missed" store hours because they open late and close early (Sundays). The staff is marginal and I have twice talked to the manager about poor service and incompetent staff. Admittedly, this was during the time they had just opened and staffr training was marginal. They still have to learn to stock for their local fisheries. I could not get a gaffhook and they were very nervous about anyone looking at high priced rods. I could not get anyone to locate big game hooks for tuna and sturgeon (oversize). Too much emphisis on clothes and "accessories" and not enough on the basic fishing equipment. They had only one model of mountable compass and no portable marine GPS's (at that time). I think the biggest problem was they way the manager (or who was suppose to represent the manager to me) did not handle my complaints with any sense that they were important. I hate being dismissied when I have something to say. I left a whole cart full of "stuff" sitting, and left, the last time the service was terrible and I could get no one to help me at all...the staff was too busy talking among themselves and playing around, to help a customer. I shop there now only when I have to....an hour further to FMS and Joe's is, well, Joe's.

This is the worst service I have ever recieved at a major chain store...even at K-mart I get better service!

WP,
Sounds like you did have a bad service, I'm pretty critical myself and have only had good service the 5 or 6 times I have been there. They are huge and I would expect it to take time for them to figure out where everything is. I feel the way you do when I walk into fishermens, there are 2 or 3 people that are very helpful but some others that make me not even want to walk into the store. One jerk can ruin it for everyone. Exspecially when I'm giving them my money. Good luck if you try them again!

I think we all see bad things at certain times, regardless of the store. I've been there about a dozen times, have never had a problem, although someone does immediately ask if you need help if you touch a GLoomis. They're getting better about stocking for local fishing. They're still lacking in the moderate - upperend rod lines. Pretty good selection of GLoomis, almost NO Lami's or St. Croix.

Yes, they have a huge clothing and accessories department...but it's a HUGE building!! I'm going to hit there this weekend, and start my search for a new bow. Seems to be a pretty small bow selection, when compared with the gazzillion rifles they have.

I think I will also print out this thread, and ask to talk to a manager about the free advertising he's getting...if they're going to open in PDX soon, it would be well worth the money to pay to advertise on IFISH!!

Rumour has it that they will not be taking over the Home Base building at Johnson Creek. However, they are looking at the Olinger Travel Homes site. Which means a totally new building leaving us without a SW up here for a while longer. Should be worth the wait though.

Check out their site on the internet. It also gives you a map for the Salem store. I also wrote them and told them what a great impact they have had. and gave them them ifish site to check to see what the customers are saying. and the need for additional stores in the Portland area. When I get a reply I'll post it.

One thing to keep in mind when looking at G. Loomis rods, they often run a sales promotion for the employees. The employee that sells the most rods in a given time, will get their choice of a Loomis rod as a reward. That's plenty of incentive to get the attention of otherwise average sales clerks, and may result in the sales staff seeming like they are pouncing on the customer. I know people who have gotten $600 Spey rods for free when doing this.

I hope that they do decide to advertise on Ifish, assuming there is room, but don't count on it.

While talking to the manager about advertising on ifish he told me their policy was to do very minimal advertising and count on low prices and word of mouth for advertising.

Advertising costs money and the prices are passed onto the consumer and they are trying something different.

Seems to be working here.

There is one coming to the Portland area at 82nd and Johnson Creek Road.
Also apparently Fishermans is looking for a west side location.

Contrary to some of the other posts that I have read, I had a great experience in the Sportsmans Warehouse.

Went to the binocular section looking for warranty information on a set of Nikon binoculars that I had. The salesman that I talked to was new and wasn't real sure of where to find the info, so I just figured that it was a lost cause and went shopping elsewhere in the store. Well, after about 30 minutes of browsing throughout the entire store, this same salesman tracked me down with the information that I had been looking for.

In any other chain store, the minute that I walked away from the counter, I would have been history. This gentleman took the time to find the information for me, knowing that I wasn't going to buy anything from him. That particular attention to customer service is what has sent me back there repeatedly since then and I have never been dissatisfied with the customer service or prices. Just my .02

The only problem I have with the place is that it WILL send you to the poor house real quick.
To bad they don't have one in PDX for you guys. I sure they will soon if they are smart.

Sportsmens is nice, but given the choice I'll head to FMS any day of the week. Their hunting selection is good but I find there fishing selection a little weak.

Stopped in there 2 weeks ago for the first time. Most righteous!
Their raingear selection was pitiful, though. One little rack, and it was crappy stuff. I normally wouldn't have noticed, but somebody decided to "borrow" mine from the back of my truck so I was looking for replacements. Other than that, it was pretty cool. I miss the "mom & pop" type stores (like FMS when they had the single building on Columbia), but that's just the way it goes anymore. :depressed:

Finally a store for the bird hunting afcionado without the draconian service. If you want a mid grade shotgun (2-3K) Sportsmans cant be beat. Whats that noise ? Why its the Grim Reaper pounding on the door at Warrens "Gun Room" in Portland

Sportsman’s has the worst service I have ever encountered!

They sold Chinookie a $600.00 Bowtech and then refused to stand behind the product when one of the limbs shattered within a couple of weeks of buying it.

I was not impressed with the service on the floor either.

As much as I hate to shop Joes due to their poor inventory control, it is absolutely the best service one can get (knowledgeable and easy to return/exchange).

Sometimes, bigger isn't better!

I live in Keizer so I get there often. My only caution is they don't have that good of a slection on Salmon and Steelhead stuff. Fishermans is much much better. They are great at hunting and camping, but not on the fishing side. Just an example, hooks in bulk. beads and spiner stuff in bulk. I tried to get a web belt for my knife and pliers and nada, some black beads nada, and a spoon knife nada. Lots of other stuff though. I still like Fishermans.

I went through there for the second time this afternoon. The first time I just walked around slackjawed like that kid in Willy Wonkas for the first time. This tiome I bought some gear, they have a pretty good flytuing selection, a great Yarn selection, and they even have hatchery tags. I am guessing though, since the hatchery tag was not hand printed, that all of the *** clerks do now. What about it, ***?

It was a pleasant day for tackle shopping for me. I was in Fishermans Shack also this morning, and if there is a better tackle store proprietor than Don, I haven't met them yet.
