What's your favorite steelhead rod? Cast or spin and why?

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
A 1983 Fenwick boron 8'3", rated 8-12 lb. It was pre-trigger which is the only drawback. This is the most sensitive rod I've ever used and I landed a 18# steelie with it many years ago. After that it would be my LCI medium action 8'6".

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
would have to be my Lamiglass Titanium. Super sensitive and light weight. Its soooo sensitive in fact, I can feel the fish make the turn and enter the river at Gold Beach when I am fishing near Grants Pass.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I have several casting rods from Lamiglas but the rod I like the best is my 15 year old
Fennwick HMG, GFS83C 8'3" 6- 17 lb
With it I can feel fish lips. I hate the day when I break it, they are not made anymore.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I prefer casting. I feel I have more control over what I'm doing and I don't have to deal with line twist as much. My favorite rod in my arsenal is my Loomis 9' IMX 8-12.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
My current favorite is a 9' 8-12 IMX
Awesome rod with tons of backbone-caught many a springer on this baby too! Pretty fragile though-the only drawback.
I am wanting to try an 1141 though I hear these are the hot ticket-I had a pretty lengthy conversation with Gary Loomis on this rod and he says that it is his favorite--so I figured I should at least own one!

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I love love love my TH 1084c ... it's long, sensitive and light ... and I had a 5 steelie day first time out. Trav did a beautiful job on it with SigTi guides and discrete black wraps. It's a pleasure to fish with as it feels like a natural extension of my arm....except for my Scott 908-4T Custom, which cuts the wind like a song and throws a fly like a thought, but fights a fish like a dream!

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
Up until now it's been a lami 8 1/2 1000 series but I haven't had many to compare it to. I buy something and make it work. Now that I have been building many RS rods I am sure it is going to get challenged this season with a plugging stick 1021 or the 1143 that is coming off the wrapper here in a day or two.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I like my baitcasting rods
My Lamiglas Norwest special 8-12 is one nice rod and I have banked and bonked many steelhead with it. A good sensitive rod for not a lot of money.
BUT my new custom built Rogue Rod 8-17 pound test is one that is very sensitive. I'm starting to think that this rod is going to be my new best friend.

Lamiglass medium heavy 1000 series casting rod.I use a medium heavy because it seems to help with hooksets and I like having a little more fighting power when needed.

GL3 Loomis 1143C. Bill Hedlund recommended it to me and it is a good all around rod. I also have it in TH 1143S and another Rainshadow casting. Good blank!

I hafta go with Loomis 9', 8-12 IMX. Sweetest feeling rod I've ever used. I do wish it had 6 more inches though.

If I had to choose one rod it would be my Gloomis 981c 10to20 plug rod. It would do every thing I need to do plug; diver&bait; drift fishing and more.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
This is good stuff. I recently had a few fishing poles stolen from my garage and need to replace a few steelhead rods/reels. Talked with my insurance company today. Right now, I am leaning toward Shane's recommendation. A GL3 STR1143C with a Curado and a TH1143S with a Stradic. I have heard they worked the bugs out on the Okuma Epic so I might consider that to save a few bucks and apply toward my deductable.
Any feedback on these combo's?

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
My favorite rod would have to be my Old Lamiglass GSH1022L. This was my first Graphite rod and also my first custom built rod. Have caught more Steelhead than I can count on it. I dont fish it much any more but do break it our once in awhile. The one's I fish the most for now are my Loomis 1085 8-17 for winter Steelhead Drift fishing and my Loomis 1143 for bobber and jig. Do fish a 1083 8-12 once in awhile also

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
TH 1084c and a close second is the TH 1024c
both w/ Shimano Chronarch's
my favorite spinning rod is the TH 1084s w/ a Shimano Sustain...
but I am working on a new blank.. its top secret.. but it should be out on the market before too long!
dad's favorite steelie rod is by far the TH1025c.. I have him build lots of rods for me to fish during the steelie season.. he builds a couple 1025c for himself and he is good to go! he also likes the TH 993s (8'3" 6-12#) that's his side drifting machine..
my wife says her favorite steelie rod is the TH993c nice and light and a bit smaller.. easy for her to handle!
so that about covers it.. we are a pretty diverse group.. just goes to ask you, if you ask 30 different fisher people you'll probably get 30 different answers.. as long as the majority of them start with TH

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
For plugs, I prefer a fast action Zebco Snoopy Special. 3'6".
For drifting soft baits like sandshrimp and eggs, I prefer a slow action Zebco Snoopy Baitslinger. 3'6"
For hogs up by bonnie, I prefer a piece of 1/2" rope tied to the cleat of a heavy, long barge. A medium action barge is a nice all purpose sturgeon barge.
Mark and snoopy.

For drift fishing: My new G.Loomis 1084C IMX. Thank you Loomis!! I love that rod.
For plugs: My L-Rods 9001C's
For jigs and freedrifting: G.Loomis 1082S's

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
Good question. With todays technology there is a large assortment of quality rods available on the market at good prices, and some utterly amazing sticks for those that want to pay top dollar.
Personally, I'm gunning with two Talon rods. A Striker, rated medium-heavy, for when the water is up and I might need to turn a fish to keep it from running down to the next drift, and a Challenger, rated medium-fast, for moderate water and smaller rivers. These rods have been serving me faithfully for years. I believe Talon was an off-shoot from an early Loomis employee who was also involved with LCI, but I'm not sure. Any way, the only place I ever have seen this brand is at Ollie Damons. They were'nt extravegently expensive, ($100-$125), and are built light and TOUGH!

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I have used a Lamiglas Series 1000 T-1306 casting rod since 1986. It has served me flawlessly. Broke a tip a few years ago and the guys at Woodland replaced the tip, no problem. Lost count of the number of Steelies and Silvers that rod had caught.

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I've made rods for years, Right now G- Loomis 8'6" IMX is my all around rod, You can't beat the wieght and back bone. I do like the Lamiglas rods to. Rainshawdows are fairly new to the market and are as good as quality as any. But if my pocket book allows G loomis IMX get my vote .

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
I love the feel of my 1024c GL3. On the other hand, I have been catching fish for decades on my 8' 3" Berkley Blazer. I keep lending it out to beginners, they keep breaking the tip, and I keep calling Berkley, and for just a few bucks, they send me a few tips. For all the High Tech sensitivity of the Loomis, I have just as high of a hook-up ratio with the Berkley.
Oh yeah, I don't have triggers on either one, but I usually fish with a 5501 C3 anyway. Without the trigger it is easy to fish with a spinning reel when the water is very low.
I guess I could turn it upside down and reel backwards.....

Re: What's your favorite steelhead rod?
My current favorite is a 10' spin rod built from an 8wt fly blank using the 1141 guide formula.
While I don't wish to cause trouble, this may stir up the pot a little.
I like spin rods because they catch more steelhead. It's easier to throw lighter rigs and make every presentation count.
After all, who caught all the fish on the Drift Fishing Video?

It would have to be a Lami "Trask" model from the early 80's. (Seemed like only yesterday)!!!
