Default lead trays

So what is the best way to store lead in a sled, (didn’t mean to rhyme) It seams that the tackle box is too inconvenient and too heavy. I have been putting the most used in the gunnel tray but that looks bad.
I need ideas

Thanks.

I use a rubbermaid container that fits in the gunnel. I put all my 2 to 8 ounce lead sinkers into one big one then. I use smaller ones to put 2 of each that I will ues that day. It doesn't make all the noise of metal containers. I also have a small towel in the bottom to keep moisture from building up in the bottom. Hope that helps.

I use a large tacklebox, put the lead in the bottom drawer. The tacklebox only leaves my boat when I am washing the boat. I don't worry much about someone stealing the box because it weighs about 60 lbs

Steven's Marine and GI Joe's both carry some really nice, heavy-duty, powder-coated steel boxes for cannon ball leads. Run $35-40 and work GREAT! Keeps them from rolling around and has 5 or 6 compartments so you can arrange by size. Also has handles to make it easy to lift in/out of boat. Regards, MS

I bought three rubbermaid containers like M.Russ1 stated, I think from Wal-Mart
about two dollars each

I put all my 2oz in one and 1 1/2 oz in another and my heavier stiff in the third.
it sits perfectly in my gunnel on the stern and doesnt rattle around...

very cheap and easy!

Storage of Cannon Ball Weights

Here is what I have done and it works very will. When I take clients or friends on the boat, people would loose the lead cannon balls. Either they put then in their pocket and take them home with then or they were loose somewhere in the boat. So her is what I did. I took a couple of 2” x 6” oak board about 14” long and drilled holes in the board part way through in the size of the lead cannon balls. I also dipped the cannon balls into a heavy duty colored rubber surface. The same thing you use for dipping pliers handles. Once the holes were drilled into the board I attached a metal handle to each board. One board has 1-½ ounce cannon balls to 5-ounce cannon balls. The board will usually hold six of each size weight. The other board has 6-ounce to 12-ounce weights.

This way when I say to the people in the boat, switch the yellow weights (1 ½ ounce) to red weights (3- ounce) there is not confusion. When people leave the boat the board should be filled with weights unless we lost one during the day. If we lost a weight during the day I will replace it.

I use the old military metal ammo boxes. The 7.62 boxes are great. They store under your seats and are small enough to carry three or four for different sizes of lead.

Catch 22

Brshooter, thanks for giving the web site on the plastic dip.

Catch 22, Organization is one of the keys to successful fishing. When the rivers are high and out of shape I try to do my organization. I do this to keep things simple when I am fishing. I have things hooked up so I don't need to retie while I am fishing. All I do is snap things together when we go from herring fishing to spinner fishing or kwikfishing. When we go bobber fishing I carry extra poles in the boat that are already rigged. What use to bother me was when the bit on and I was tying rigs. Then when I finished and we got back in the water the bit was over. This was the last time this ever happened.

Just keep it simple organized and keep your line in the water as much as possible.

This leads to success.

One of the main reasons I keep my cannon ball leads colored and organized this way is for one other reason. You ever take a person fishing and they cannot tell the size of a 2-ounce from a 3-ounce or 4-ounce and all of a sudden you tangle lines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use a old laundry soap bucket cut in half, drill some holes in the bottom so any water can drain, put a towl under it and it won't slide around. I keep about 40#'s of lead in the boat this way, it's cheap and easy.

I have a lead box that sits inside the stern gunnel. Just so happens that a standard on fit real nice, otherwise I would have had one made.

I also use the Plasti Dip to color coat my leads. It works great, because it is hard to tell the various sizes. Any three year old can pick out the right color!

I have found it is best to thin the Plasti Dip before using. Try dipping your trolling leads too!

I use a rubber maid "tool tray" for large leads (12 to 32 oz) and a Motion marine box for small leads (1 to 10 oz). I also bought a rubber matt with holes in it at Home Depot. (you can buy a whole matt for what they want for the strips at Joes) Cut it into strips and put them in the gunnel to hold leads that are "staged" for later use.

I use the 2 x 6 with the holes too. It fits perfectly on the back deck of the sled. I use a piece of clear cedar and treat with sealer. Drill the holes half way and drill a smaller hole straight through to allow water to drain. Some rubber feet allow air flow underneath so it doesn't sit in water. Drilled two holes at each end and made poly rope handles. No rust to worry about. I took another piece of 2 x 6 to fashion a cover using a router.

It really helps to be able to select the proper weights quickly and not fish through a box full of different sizes.

I have tried two ways. The first is to use the costco chicken cans with holes in the bottom for rain. Attach to a 2x6, they keep weights seperated and if you use about 4 of them that covers the lead I use. I also have just recently used pet bowles. Bi-Mart has a three dish in one with stop skids on the bottom. The are a little bigger but work great.
