Best Hand lotion
OK: Winter fishing is here. With that many dry and cracked hands and finger tips.
So what is the best hand lotion to minimize and heal those cracked and dried finger tips?

Re: Best Hand lotion
Corn huskers...or Vaseline intensive care have worked best for us. Horn huskers is a bit oily but protects. The intensive care seems to heal better.

Re: Best Hand lotion
One thing that I have found important to have IN your boat is that new liquid bandage stuff. If you get a cut from a fish tooth, it's invaluable to seal it until you can bandaid it.
When I get home, I use ZIA hand lotion. It's in the health food section at Freddies. I swear by the stuff. It's expensive, but well worth it. It has Shea butter in it, and it works for me.

Aveeno Oatmeal lotion. Works great. Kingfish85 I just can't put teet dip on my hands.
I just wonder what the fish think of some of the scents that many hand lotions have. Then again if you are wearing gloves it should not matter.
Giz, you and Roy need to get out more. Next thing you know we will be asking each other what is the best fishing fabric softener.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I have used Eucerin and it has worked pretty well. I am always looking for something better though. If you don't have the Liquid BandAid stuff Jen mentioned (which works good), I use plain ol' super glue. The ends of my fingers split ans hurt like crazy The super glue feels a little weird at first, but it seals the cracks up quickly and they heal faster.

Re: Best Hand lotion
My wife worked in a maternity ward for awhile as a photographer, and prior to visiting each newborn she had to wash her hands. She tried everything out there to help her hands, and what she found from a glowing recommendation from one of the other nurses was "Working Hands Cream". It's a more solid cream than any of those lotion things but the stuff works and works WELL.
You can find it at Rite-Aid and, curiously enough, I've seen it in front of the registers at Fisherman's Marine Supply. It's in a short, wide, white plastic jar. Give one of the small ones a try, but I tell you that this stuff works amazingly well.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I work for the water bureau up here in P-town installing and repairing the water mains for the city. The job constantly has my hands in the mud and water as well as getting just plain beating them up. The folks in our store room are nice enough to supply us ditch monkeys with this stuff called SBS-40 medicated hand cream and it works like an absolute champ. It smells a little funky, but the anti-bacterials in it sure seem to speed up the heal time for the cuts and cracks. I'm not exactly sure where you can purchase it, maybe a contractor's or construction supply store. It is made by DEB SBS Inc. if you're interested. They also make a good waterless hand cleaner.

I second "Working Hands Cream." I have hands that will crack to the meat all year round. This cream has them healed in a few days and now that I use it regularly I have no problems what so ever.

Working hands creme is the best I have found also. Moisturizing from the inside (drink lots of water this time of year) also helps.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I've dealt with dry and cracking hands my whole life. Tried everything on the market, plus several prescription lotions/creams.
The thing that works best for healing my hands is a liberal coat of Corn Huskers in the morning and again at night. It stings a bit at first when it gets into the raw cracks, but shortly after that your hands feel much better.

Forget the rest--get some O'Keeffe's Working Hands Creme. It will solve those cracks and splits on your hands. No strong smell and does not leave hands greasy. Got mine at Fisherman's Marine Supply. Finally, a product that does what it says. About $5.

Working Hands
When things get really bad. Extreme Working Hands. I put a bunch of working hands on the cracked areas, then put on latex gloves, leave it on as long as you can stand to wear the gloves.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I work in the paper industry so for all of my 12 hr shifts I am working with tape and adhesive backed labels. I always have cracked fingers, year round. Bag balm heavily coated and then slip your hands into latex gloves for about an hour softens em right up.(I'm married guys) I might trty the working hands creme in the future though. And there's nothing wrong with matching your shirt and shoes to your rods, reels or lures to impress all the other slovenly fishers on the water.

I buy the nylons for tuna balls, I swear!
And the elastic bands with the balls on the end are really used to keep my rod tip attached to the rod butt during transport.
Oh, and the "lady of the night" red nail polish is for painting jig heads.
The croche hook is for taking backlashes out of reels, of course.
Just don't ask about the pumps, though.

Re: Best Hand lotion
2 options, best and second best.
1st is a product you'll have to have your dentist order for you called Glove N' Care made by Essential Dental. I'm a dental products rep and its the best stuff I've found. Less than $10 a tube and doesn't wash off with every washing of the hands and is not oily at all. Wish I could get free samples but even I have to pay for the stuff. Only available from dental professionals but not a prescription.
2nd best is Udder Cream found at farm supply stores and livestock supply stores. Even Paul Harvey promotes it.

Wilco Farmers has a cream called "Hoof Tenders" (maybe it's Hoof Menders). This stuff is incredible. Cheap too!
However, if your lower jaw starts moving from side to side, back off on the applications.

This old man I use to fish with in Puget Sound wouldn't let you even touch any of his plugs or tackle until you rubbed Oil of O'lay on your hands. He said he didn't know what was in it but years ago they used Turtle oil in there lotion.
For me I don't normally use anything until it to late. But Coco Butter works good for me when I reach that point.

My off the shelf vote is for Corn huskers. I don't find it oily...in comparrison to other stuff I've tried. Also I'm with Jen, I've used that new skin stuff for years now. I keep some in our first aid kits at work, too. I've heard super glue works, but haven't tried it...yet.

I work in a local hospital and wash my hands, oh about every 10 minutes. The hospital provided us with a product called SoftGuard. I really like the stuff. I have bought it at uniform shops that cater to health care workers. I think that I will try some of the Working Hands. Sounds like a pretty good product as well.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I have been using Arbonne's foot creme on my hands. It doesn't go on greasy and seems to be working better than the Corn Huskers did. It is expensive though (like $14 a tube). I am always looking for something new though. I also always keep a bottle of super glue handy to fix the cuts. It feels weird, but works well.

Re: Best Hand lotion
I work in an ER and I saw my 1,000,000th cut on thursday...or was it wednesday? Anyway everyone should have superglue in their tackle box. 2 good reasons why. 1) I use a drop of superglue on my tied knots - extra security. 2) If you get your line snagged and you're not wearing gloves and get a laceration on one or three of your fingers (personal experience) or like jennie you catch a salmon and cut your finger on their teeth (you have to catch fish first to know this) you can put glue on your wound. Sounds wierd doesn't it. Well guess what? doctors use superglue instead of stiches on many cases... well okay it's not called superglue, it's called "dermabond" but the only differance is that dermabond is more flexible so it doesn't crack and peel off as easily (oh, and it's purple). Doctors used to have the real superglue in their pockets until someone invented "dermabond". Superglue works well on paper cuts or any cut that's well approximated (lines up well). Use several coats. This stops the bleeding and usually the pain. I don't recomend this over seeing a doctor for deep cuts or anything more than a papercut, especially if you're not sure. My superglue gets used a lot.
