A few days ago I had the pleasure of having my buddy Erik who goes by "Ifishsum" and that crazy dude Jon, aka Spookalotafish in my DB for a good part of a day on the Whatchagot River on the North coast.
After seeing pix of Jon crashing his raft over Rainey Falls I decided it best that I run the boat this time.
I understood there were a few Winter fish and some Nookers still around but we decided to focus mainly on steelhead and used tackle that would still be somewhat sporting to the Steelhead but able to handle a Nookie too.
There has been a lot of bantering about various scents and "milks" on the board recently and I thought well heck, why not make my own???
After much debate we settled on a formula, to be revealed only if it worked of course....
Herring wrap? Maybe a shrimp/egg paste of some sort? You know those fish are pretty picky at times. Now what would appeal to me if I was a fish???
It was a three part deal, a couple dabs of slightly used mint snuff --which is available at many fine retail outlets-- and a dash of Cuban Cohiba cigar ash rolled in crumbs from a Chips Ahoy box. PERFECT!!!
Let's smear that stuff on a little Wiggle Wart and see what happens.....
Not soon after launching we found ourselves in a killer looking tailout that just screamed "Steelhead".
As Erik popped the right rod to shake a leaf off his plug, Jons' rod goes down decisively and just stays pointed at the water until he grabs it.
Fish on!!!!!
Hmmm, this thing isn't jumping much...
Houston, we've got Nookie....
Get the net....
Brag shot....
I always like to get a shot of the boat with fish pix too. I'm the good looking guy on the left...
Upon netting the beast I thought maybe mid-twenty pound range until I weighed it on a good quality hand scale. Nope, solid 30#.
Not too shabby. Maybe the Tobacco nectar could be the way of the future??? Can't say right now, more testing is needed.
We didn't find any fish the rest of the trip but later on found out why. That darn DJ was stopping them cold before they barely got out of tidewater!!!
I found out later that our chinook hitched a ride with a cheese truck to get past DJ.
Methinks a little tweaking with the recipe will be needed. Cuban works with mint, the crumbs are OK but maybe Wintergreen with a cheaper Dominican cigar ash with some of those Mothers' Taffy cookie crumbs might be the ticket. I'd better give the Fishin' Mission a call and see if I can get a deal.....
