I think rope is probably the better material if you aren't planning on rowing using oarstops. Both materials with will slide a too easily in the oarlocks. UHMW will slide especially well.

UHMW degrades very rapidly when exposed to UV (the sun). Don't ask me how I know this!

Go with Nylon!

I think your talking about the sleeve that the oarlock rides in right? Not the wrapping on the oar (I think thats what dr is refering to).

Yes, MissB, it's the sleeve that the oarlock rotates in. I was quite surprised to find out that UHMW isn't UV resistant. I hadn't heard this before. I know you said "don't ask" but I'm going to ask anyway. How did you find this out? (could be a good story)

You wanna buy a wooden drift boat that needs some bottom work? Like new UHMW from being upside down on sawhorses?

Oh- and I bought my Nylon sleeves at Larry's. Don't think that violates AUP for obvious reasons.

Hmm- maybe I should part that boat out. Sleeves, oarlocks, oars and a flower box.

Ampersat,

My bad.. I'm not sure that the oarlock sleeves would see much UV light with the oarlocks in place but it is an interesting problem.

Thanks all. I need to go by FMS for a pulley for the anchor setup anyway. And a bag of jerky for the wife. She always makes me pick her up jerky when I go there. Small price to pay.

Default Oarlock sleeves - UHMW or nylon

Is UHMW really that much better than the more commonly available nylon oarlock sleeve? I called a place yesterday asking about their UHMW and he suggested that nylon takes weather better than UHMW.
