First story for new Ifisher
Hello All,
Beings that I am new to Ifish I would like to say hello.
I would like to share the story about my stealheading.
i fished a coastal stream for steelhead since I was 12. I never hooked a steelhead until I was 14, On that day I was plunking eggs and had nothing but trout bites. When a bite came a knocking I thought damn trout and gave a monster hookset, to my surprise there was some weight to it. That beast spooled my 200 shimano loaded with 8lb line and went to spawn up the river, broke me off. The only fish I touched that year.
The next year I was 15 and could not stand plunking anymore. I was going to drift fish. Of course I knew very little about drift fishing. I spent two weeks retying and gong to BiMart for more gear. One particular day I ventured to new unexplored water and proceeded to drift fish. I make one cast and what do you know a snag. Darn it, I have to remove my gloves and retie in the rain and sleet. I was almost out of gear, but I was determined to get a drift through that hole. I noticed a piece of oink and white yarn on the ground next to me and thought it looked good, all colors looked good to me. So I tied it up following a pearl corkie. I decided that this hole was not worth my precous eggs so I threw it out with out. Bounce bounce bounce snag, NOT!!!! This snag was making a tear for the mouth and I was determined to get it. I fought it for about 10 min and landed a beautiful 12lb hatchery. I was so excited that I just went home never threw out again.
Since then I only drift fish, and rarely ever use bait. I have made friends with every snag on the river and I leave them alone and just pick on the steelies in the river. I am now 24 and have fallen in love with fishing, I might be a bit fish crazy.
I now live in Beaverton and have explored the Wilson some and have had no success on the fall Chinook, but hope to nail the ironheads. I dont have a boat but I do have a truck so if anyone wants to go fishing in the area please let me know. I have little experience on rivers up here but I did manage to catch some sturgeon up by Troutdale off the bank and a couple of steelies on the Sandy last year.
So hi all and I hope to see you on the river.[LIST]

Re: First story for new Ifisher
Nice story - I don't catch fish all the time, and when I do It is a challenge. I enjoy drift fishing, just learning bobber and eggs this last year. It has been a challenge but fuuuuun. Well Welcome to ifish.

Re: First story for new Ifisher
Hello Fishgetter and welcome to iFish. I think you will find that the decision to join this group is a good one and will reveal a wealth of great fishing information.
I am working on a restoration of an old but sound 1958 Starcraft 14’ Seafarer that should be ready to go for drift fishing by January. Maybe we can “hook” up on the Wilson for some Steelies…
