Default The fishery and wind.

I have only fished in the gorge a few times. The last time I was there, one of the guys got seasick. We had a west wind and had to run the kicker to stay straight. It was pretty rough for a couple of hours but the wind did die down then it was like glass.

Well here is the forecast for friday: Sunny west of cascade locks. Low clouds and patchy fog east. Highs near 45 east and near 50 west. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Except 25 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph west of cascade locks.

This doesnt sound like fun and with the wife and daughter with me this may not be a good option.

So for you regular fishery guys how bad is it going to be up there?

Unfortunalty the tides at Kelly Point are not good either, incoming most of the day.

Comments?

A east wind is not as bad. A east wind of less than 15 is very manageable, above that and it starts to get less fun. You can find places above the fishery where it is more protected and much calmer. 45mph and I would stay home. The report from weather.com has the winds <10 all day so it should be fine.

it never blows at The Fishery-NOT.

If you are planning on taking your family up there even if the wind is blowing 15 or 20 it might be wise to do a "wind check" and go when weather is better. I'd rather them remember a trip for better reasons than being cold all day.

5-10 from the east is great conditions. The 25-30 plus heavy gusts can get a bit nasty. An east wind is prefered. It only takes about 10-15 mph west wind to give you 3 feet of wind chop.
I use the forecasts as a guide. I usually give the fishery a call (541-374-8577) to get a first hand report. Most of the time, the morning is still fairly calm. You can get up there and fish till 11 or so and get off before the wind picks up.
We were toying with the idea of being up there tomorrow as well. Good Luck and happy Turkey Day

Waterdog - fish_on is right, East wind goes with the current and the river is usually nice and flat. Of course this time of year the East wind is chilly. That's the only problem you might have, brrr... Good thing about the east wind though, it'll be at your back. Holds the boat straight in the current and goes over the top instead of in your face.
Bad news is it seems to make the fish go off the bite, just like Steelhead/Salmon. Go figure how Sturg in 100 feet of water knows what the wind is doing!
Good luck

My dad fished Cape Dissappointment yesterday and did real well for keeper fish. Also got into a few oversize. There should be plenty of fish throughout the Columbia system where one would not have to battle the wind and still have a very good day of fishing. Natural Clambeds anyone? Find em.

Ya' just never know guys.... and frankly the forecasts are anything but accurate. A couple of weeks ago I decided not to put the boat in the water because of a high wind forecast. The wind never showed.

On the other hand, I've seen plenty of times when the predicted "EW 5-10" turned into "WW at 20-25" in the matter of an hour, and had breakers comin' over the bow trying to get back to the ramp....

If you are headed this direction, do empty your closet! It was 18 this morning, and colder tomorrow, if you believe the forecasters!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day, and tight lines..... Tim

Thanks guys. Well I figure the weather geeks can at least hit the "tomorrow" forecast pretty close.

Fish_on, weather.com is very optimisic about the wind. The NOAA FORECAST is not.

THIS SITE shows it's mighty windy already.

Wind in the gorge was brutal today, not a great day to be on the water. Managed a nice 50".
