Fishing near Corvallis??
Spending Thanksgiving with my wife and her family down in Blodgett (outside Philomath....outside Corvallis). My wife has to work on Friday...so I have a KP to go fishing. Where are there places to fish in that general area, or within an hour or two drive?!!??!

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
There is a good run of steelies on the Alsea River, but Im not sure if they are running yet. They may be in the tidewater though, may be worth a shot. Good luck to ya

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
Never fished the Alsea. Can I pry a few zipper lip locations out of you as to where I can get access to good spots? I'll have to find the river on the map...and certainly dont know where to go once I get there.

I second the Alsea. It is still open for chinook. I'm going tomorrow so I can let you know what is going on.

I always parked by below the hatchery bridge and walked the bank. You pass over the bridge on your way from C-town to Alsea.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
I was there Sunday...caught a dinner-jack, about 7 pounds (chinook) and went home...saw a few others caught...pressurewas light...Try anywhere between Mike Bauer Landing (low, above tidewater) and Five Rivers Bridge (about 20 miles even from Alsea and Waldport).
I used tidewater bobber rig, but gotta keep the bait up off the bottom a bit...I worked three holes without success until I got it to quit banging the bottom...there are some deep holes...been a few winter steelhead show up and still chinook down there...

Road names?? Easy driving directions from Corvallis?? Seriously, I've never been to that area and would like to minimize my "in car" time and maximize my "wishing a fish would eat my corkie" time.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
Try the area between milepost 13 and 17, some good bank access there. I think at milepost 13 there is a bout a 180 degree bend in the road with a cutout in the white guardrail, and a driveway down to a parking area. On a river map it would be called the "crusher". I have landed many winter steelies above the fast water, and some chinook below in the slower water. This spot is about 2 miles below where 5 rivers meets the Alsea. I have caught winters at this spot as early as thanksgiving. I would target them, I believe the salmon thing is pretty well toast by now, but who knows, maybe a late runner will take up your offering. Anyway good luck on the trip. PS - Dont forget the Northfork of Alsea is not open until Dec. 1

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
From Blodgett head back towards Corvallis/Philomath, just as you come to Philomath (before you cross RR tracks) you will see a right to Alsea/Waldport. Take this for about 18-20 miles and you will be in the area that everyone is posting about. Siletz is also up the road from Blodgett, go back towards Newport and turn in Toledo. It may be harder to fish from the bank, I have only drifted it twice. Good Luck!

My vote would be for Barkley's it's at about mp 12 .You cross the river on the bridge and park there the last time I fished it the fee was $1 and you are just above tidewater. That or the rock crusher at mp 16. Tim

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
Just got back from the Alsea, and it was very slow. I fished the hole between milepost 12 and 13, with no luck.
The guy next to me however hit a nice chinook using eggs and a bobber.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
Some place else you might try is the Big Elk River just above Elk City for steelhead. A bobber and eggs in the lower holes should work. Also give Olalla Reservoir between Toledo and Newport on the north side of highway 20. There are usually trout and landlock steelhead here, you can fish right by the dam. Hopefully the Olalla is still open has they have had some trouble with vandals.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
Texan,
You can find all these spots with copies of the books "Fishing in Oregon" and the "Oregon Atlas and Gazeteer." Those were my guides for many years when learing where to fish in Oregon.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
oregon bankie's right on the money. "Fishing in Oregon" has more info for the new-to-an-area then you could imagine. I spent many hours reading that book. My last copy was from 1990 I think and I need to upgrade... Joe

You are right Joe. You should replace it. I have seen where you read it and it probably smells funny too.

Re: Fishing near Corvallis??
C.T.
Forget the Alsea. Head the Siletz for some late season summer steelhead. Since you will be in Blodget you will be most of the way there already.
From Blodget head towards Summit, drive through Summit on to NashVille, Hang a right at NashVille and drive up over the mountain. You will eventually come out at Logsden. There will be a Fire house on your right. Turn right there and drive up to MoonShine park. Fish in and above the park. If the Siletz Gorge road is open (Call the GP office in Toledeo) drive up it and fish where you think looks good.
