Default A case of crabbing greed?

An interesting thing happened yesterday. I got a wild hair to go crabbing yesterday afternoon so I called Free Willy for a last minute weather report before heading down. The guy I spoke with said hurry and get down here, you can probably catch your limit of commercial size crab in minutes right off the dock! I said what the?? He then explained the situation. He said a commercial crabbing boat was coming in from the first day of crabbing in the ocean and was so loaded down with crabs it started to sink! They limped it to the ramp and when it got there it tipped to the side so much it dumped a bunch of totes full of crab in the water. I said hmmm, several crab in the water huh? He said not several, a ton, like 500+! Well, when we got there they were still trying to get it righted. The had all but one lane of the ramp blocked with trucks and were still cleaning up the totes with a forklift. I snapped a quick picture so you all could see. I would have taken more but the guys didn't look too happy and I'm sure me playing reporter running around snapping pics wouldn't have helped their mood. You can at least get the idea.

So to any of you that are thinking of going crabbing....they just stocked 500+ large male crab in the Hammond area .

Good story. Just goes to show you what happens when you get greedy.

I commercial fished Bristol Bay one season and out camp of 23 boats lost one due to greed. Eight people dies that season because overloading there 32' boat. At least he did not lose his life. Maybe he will learn.

Too bad for the commercial guy. Hope his boat isn't too dammaged.

I wonder if they allow people to crab off the dock.

That looks like one of the boats that runs out of the West side of Skipinon for the Seafood Plant there (Owned by Bornsteins). He's gunna have more than just a crab problem if his running gear's sitting on the concrete there.
I notice they have a spill boom up behind the boat too. Probably just a protective measure.
Looks like Warrenton Boat Works might have another "hot" job coming up.

The name of the boat was Fanta Sea. As for the spill boom, I didn't see any sheen on the water but it smelled like fuel real bad. I could smell it strong at the top of the ramp. I'm guessing some made it in the water :depressed: . Also, you can barely make it out in the pic but the boat was tied off with several ropes from the side to the dock. They were the only thing keeping it from rolling  . Who knows how far it went over before they got it tied off.

Yep- Fanta Sea, that's the one, I was still trying to remember the name. Nice looking boat too (which is why I recognized it). Guess he needs a bigger one though!
