Warrenton 11/20
Crabbed the Columbia 11/20 b-22. Got 46 keepers on the first and last pull. Lost the plug in the boat had to call the Coasties, beached the boat and pumped it out. Coasties pulled us off the beach and then helped us locate our pots. If we had another 20 minutes we could have got limits for 5. Thank God for Coasties.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Lipripper,
I was at Bouy 22 on Wednesday and saw your boat beached with the CG in assistance. Glad all turned out OK. Hope you haven't got too much damage.
We did not share in your good fortune with the crabs. We were using shad and
salmon heads, dropped in 22-28 feet of water and could only come up with 10 total keepers! The shad were from this June, salmon from this fall.
What were we doing wrong? Did all of the boats do as well as you. We didn't see that many boats doing exceptionally well. I'm embarrassed. Help!
Rusty

Re: Warrenton 11/20
The guy I was out there with had similar problem as you last wek as he had a hard time getting crab and everyone else was getting in to them. He speculated that his shad may have been freezer burned. We were using shad and it was almost too soft. I think he aged it a bit in the sun. I don't get to crab much so I may not be a good source of info. We talked to a few othere yesterday and they said they had a good day.We inspected the boat after it was up on the trailer and didn't notice any damage. What was bad could have been worse. The good Lord was looking after us yesterday.
Bernie, how's your dad?

Re: Warrenton 11/20
That's the one place in the world I would hate to loose a plug. I'm glad you guys are OK. Congrats on the crabs
Did the plug just work itself loose somehow?

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Well, I should have told the whole story. After we picked up the first pot the rope got tangled in the prop and cut off the pot. We went on to the next couple of pots and then noticed water in the boat. We think that somehow the rope getting tangled in the prop somehow snagged the plug and pulled it out.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Hmmm...then there's the question.."Plug put in from the outside, or inside??"
Glad you made it O.K. Got a spare in the boat now?

Re: Warrenton 11/20
lipripper,
How were the water conditions? Was there fog? I'm thinking of trying it Saturday. Did you go for the morning tide or the later high tide? Thanks in advance for the info!

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Id like to hear some folks give results of using salmon carcass for crab bait. I tried it once and got nothing in that pot but lots of crab in the ones baited with shad. Old freezer burned shad should make no difference. I unthaw 15 shad per trip and what I dont use goes back in the freezer. Some bait ends up going on my crab trips 2 or 3 times before it gets used. I believe the stinkier the better, when it comes to crab bait.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
It was a little bumpy but not bad. We crabbed the morning tide. Pots in at 0900. Pots on the boat 1100. Wish we could have stayed linger. Beautiful day. Little breezy and overcast but nice. I'll be there again Saturday but this tme I'll have my boat and NO STUPID BOAT TRICKS
Mark, we can't get to the plug from the inside as tried that to get the hole filled. Good idea though.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Well, I guess I'll have to just say it wasn't my day. My shad was perfect, the water was great, wind died down at 11:00 AM, but the crabs decided that my traps were just not to their liking.
Oh well, at least we got 10, but we really should have done better.
Thanks for the info Lipripper.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Was at Buoy 22 at 1100 yesterday also and saw the activity with the USCG zodiac. I thought they were playing game cop instead of keeping you guys afloat. Glad all worked out.
Got 2 easy limits on turkey legs before the ebb started ripping.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
We were at bouy 22 on the 18th. 1.5 hours before high and limited for 5. Used shad, salmon, old smelt, and chicken. All bait worked well. The weather was ugly, windy and choppy.

Re: Warrenton 11/20
I don't believe that the stinkier the bait the better. I have been diving many times and have had crabs come out of the sand and "swim" over to the the fish that was stuck on the end of the spear, as I was messing with my gear. Then just grab both and stuff them in the catch bag. TUNA! works good and I like to mix salmon and a pinch of tuna for a good crab receipe

Re: Warrenton 11/20
Was out Sat. AM. Good crabbing. I have a white glassply with brown diagonal stripe and Furuno radar. Did not see your black north river. I am taking Sunday off so I hope everyone else has good crabbing.
