Sports threads and fishing threads...
We made exceptions to a few sports threads now and then.
I have gotten a couple whistles on these threads and I'm asking you what to do.
Do you want a forum for sports, or can we keep it to just a few, now and then?
We are getting too many, and it's dilluting the fishing content of the main board.
I'm asking for ideas and help in how to manage this situation?
If it's one or two active threads, it's great... Otherwise, it's looking like we are going to have to move them all to general.
Moderation: key.
Jen

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
This might be the wrong week to bring this one up, Jen...
It's not tough for me, since I'm just a visitor and don't have to handle all the moderation. I simply skip over a lot of the subjects that don't interest me...
I would think that if you open another subject board at some point it's gonna be as long as the threads menu...

It's called Ifish, not Ifootball!

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I'm just as big of sports fan as most everyone else out there...especially when it comes to college football...HOWEVER.... i must agree with 'timeinthegorge' on this one...this IS an ifish forum...and not ifootball  Don't get me wrong...nothing wrong with a little smack talkin'...but lets keep it in its own forum, just like flyfishing, bassin' saltwater, etc.
Yes, you CAN scroll past it, but its the same as saying " you can always close the pop-ups that come up, and choose not to look at them and click them"
We're fortunate enough to not have pop-ups here, THANKS JENN..
However, this site IS made strictly for fishing, so we probably should keep it that way.
I Think that's one reason why so many people come here...to get their fix of reading about fishing and that it's so concentrated only ON fishing.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Actually Tim I like this board just fine. I just cant believe there are people complaing about a couple topics, especially when this board is free (thanks Jen). Most people that fish/hunt are also sports fans. Oregonians in particular strongly support there sports teams as well as those who live in that big city up north (can't remember the name, they got a goofy restaraunt there thats on top of a needle  ). I dont read everything on this BB , just those that interest me. Its nice to have a choice. To read or not to read.

How hard is it to go to the General board to talk sports? Not very hard.
People seem to navigate this far through the web alright, one more click should be manageable.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Oh oh,
So, Jenn, I started the Civil War smackdown.
I did so because the "Duck Soup" thread had ancient history going on (last weeks devastating duck loss).
This is the first time I personally have posted on a sports topic and it is because you had mentioned a few weeks ago that you would tolerate college football.
Well this week (and I suppose next with the Apple Cup) are the major fun rivalries of the year.
Yes there will be alot of smack and I apologize to the fishing diehards. But comeon. It is one week and then away we go. No one is posting pro football or Hockey or Basketball threads.
Can't we live with a week or two of fun smack on the fish board? After all, we are all hard core fishermen here. This is one of the few things we can talk about here that is talked about in the boat between fish that we CAN talk about here.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
This thread is occupying just as much space as the smack thread........
This whole idea kinda makes me laugh. A bunch of folks on here from WA and OR that grew up around here want to share a few stingers with each other, and people are crying about it and want a new forum for it (nice run-on sentence, eh?). At any given time there is no more than one or two active, and as was pointed out earlier, it will be over until next August in a week. I just don't see how this degrades the board when the community is having a little fun with each other and, God forbid, laughing a bit.
We could, as an alternative, debate which hooks are the sharpest and penetrate the best........again.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I think the whole college football thing adds a lot of flavor to the fishing-related posts, so if the fans want a couple of football posts before two of the biggest games, they should have their fun.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I will apologize to some extent as well for the Apple Cup thread. I am a moderator (admin) on a gaming board and I know how a forum can get out of hand sometimes. We allow a few off topics posts here and there and people don't seem to mind too much. The community generally sets the tone but it is the General Administrator who has the final say of course.
I hope that there aren't too many people getting snagged up on this. If the thread is bothersome just leave it alone and let it sink to the bottom.
Thanks

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I know!
I'll choose my team preference, and we'll call it the Beavers Board, and.... ????
No, I think we can last through these tough times until they are over with sports on the main board for now.
Just limit them to a few threads... I have worked very hard to keep this a fishing forum, in more than one way. I try to keep ads to a minimum, and it's not always easy.
For now, it's a FISHING forum, with a few sports topics now and then.... If they start to overwhelm the board, though... They are off to Life In General, all of them!!
...and remember, there are new people coming aboard all the time, so if you have debated how sharp hooks are once too many, remember, there are some who have not.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I don't think I've personally watched four sporting events all year other than boxing. So, I would not exactly call myself a sports fan. However, the sports topics hardly bother me. In fact, I enjoy the rivalry between those saps north of us and the fans here.
If it is contained within a few threads or in a signature line, it doesn't bother me at all. It's only when there's so many threads off topic that they start shoving fishing threads off the first page that it bothers me. This board has grown so much and so fast in the last couple years that a thread asking a good question that is not answered in a few hours, will be gone from page one and go unanswered. Helping new members and being there for on topic questions is what this board is intended for. It's when the users lose sight of this that we have people complain.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I can only speak for myself but i imagine many would agree that part of the fun of Ifish is the diversity and the people...... I could care less about many of the posting on here, so i dont read them... a little friendly competition amongst alums is good for a board - keeps things interesting.... and you know we'll find away around the rules anyways.. . for example
subject: Hoglines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Message: So i was sitting in a hogline today fishing my booty off for FISH.. using a green kwiki w/ power pro I got a Joe's on a TH, also tried some amerman eggs, tied the hooks up w/ a tie master etc....etc.... anyways the fishing wasn't so good but this one guy in the line pops off about how the Dawgs were on a roll.... HA ... on a roll against Who? ... Cougs are going to put them back in their place!!!! Go Cougs.
see its so easy to bend the rules  ... let us have some fun, and we'll keep it in control... no more rules! ... and if you dont like it, dont read it..... seriously why do so many people feel they need to just be a pain....

You are so wrong.
Sorry, but boards go to trash if there is no moderation and rules.
Visit a few, you'll see.
We've come a long way, baby... and it's a lot of work.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
The diversity of the populace can be experienced in the General Chat area. Nobody is saying that they should be deleted and nobody is asking that there be separate forums for each topic. Now that Jennie has moved the General Chat to the same forum group it wouldn't be the kiss of death to keep them there.
It should be a hint for the person posting that if they need to put NFR in the title of the thread that it's Not Fishing Related and, therefore, should be in General Chat.
I don't mean this to be critical of the management here at iFish. Just an opinion/suggestion where one was requested.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Jennie -
I wasn't targeting you or the other moderators on here - you guys do a wonderful job and I have no complaints... the site is put together very well and operates in a very oderly fashion....
I was referring more to people "in general" that find it necessary to complain and/or change about everything they dont agree with even though a large populous is managing just fine as things are.
And when I said 'no more rule's' it was regarding the fact that I like Ifish just as it is......

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I will take that as a compliment........thank you, and thanks Jen for the excellent leadership.
We get.......I'll call them "comments".......from people all the time. Sometimes we agree with their concerns and sometimes we don't. Still, it is nice to hear feedback and your input.
We can't keep all of you happy all of the time. Instead, we will try to abide by and enforce the board rules.
I have no problem with the occasional sports thread and the associated smack talk, as long as it is tasteful and not excessive.
Stay civil before and after the Civil War game and we will all have a good time.
Go you lame limpin busted up Ducks!

Jen; You asked my opionion. Keep fishing fishing. Let football go where most all other NFR is sent.
A little bit now and then is ok and you be the boss. I like it. This is a great site. Your doing a great job.

I have personaly never watched a ball game of any type in my life (just don't do anything for me) but I don't see a problem with it since all you have to do is skip it. I don't know to many people who will read a whole string of posts if they are not intrested.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
I am on the side of many that say if you don't want to read it....don't. This is a great time of year filled with the ultimate in college athletics and that is the state rivalries. I have lived in Washington all my life and love the Apple Cup. I am not a smack talkin person but I enjoy reading it...is it fishing related?? Naw but its life related and its over at a given time. I guess I really don't care but stick with the motto if you don't want to read it...don't.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
My feeling is keep it fishing related. I don't side with zero tollerance but extremely minimal would be nice. Catch 22 makes an excellent point:

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Banish them!
I really don't care but these threads keep popping to the top and sometimes good fishing info gets buried and missed.

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Lighten up....4 days and the Beavs/Ducks topic will take care of itself! It's as much an Oregon tradition as fishing! Just a few more days.....I can take it than long!

Re: Sports threads and fishing threads...
Just another observation.....I see only ONE sports thread on the first page, it's not like it's pushing any huge fishing stories off the site! It's also a longer thread at the moment than most so obviously there is a lot of interest in it it. OK....back to the Smack.....Ducks vs Beavs......
