Re: Take a test
I would say the top one is trout and bottom salmon. Don't salmon have spot on the tail?
Opps I guess I better do some more home work.

Re: Take a test
My Indian friends in Wyoming say "Salmon swim with fork tail", "Trout swim with spotted tail"...

Re: Take a test
This is interesting but not very useful is it? Most Chinook do not stay in fresh water until they reach smolt size (Kenai is a noteable exception). They migrate in the first year right? Maybe for hatchery releases this is useful(mostly Springers).
I'd be a lot more worried about the Steelhead and Silver Smolts that folks think are "trout". Are the Coastal streams still closed for trout to prevent this?

Re: Take a test
Two Key features;
1st Anal fin much longer and many more rays for salmon TOP.
2nd Forked tail for salmon and flat for rainbow.
Miss B Haven there are two phases of juvinile chinook;
Ocean phase: leave the fresh water as a "fry" and "smolt" to the estuary or ocean in less than a year(most Oregon coastal streams, columbia tule stock).
Stream phase: leave the fresh water a a "fry" and "smolt" to the estuary or ocean in more than one year (all alaska chinook , spring and summer chinook, up river brights and many inland coastal rivers).
