Default Live Pigeons for Dog Training

Does anybody know where I can buy live pigeons to quench my 4 month old vizsla's thirst for birds? I want to get him started!

Try Craigslist (I see them listed every once in awhile where I live). Also, if you have any livestock auctions near where you live, give them a call and see if they sell poultry, every once in awhile someone will bring in pigeons to sell that they have caught from their barn.

What part of the state are you in? How many birds do you need?

If you buy from Craigslist, or any other source than a dog trainer, please don't mention they're for dog training.
Some people can be very sensitive to the idea that those birds are likely to get chewed up and we don't need to fuel any anti-hunter sentiment.
Just avoid the question or have a more innocent story.
PS, you can try to trap them too, and have some fun doing it.

Why am I picturing someone in a McDonald's parking lot with a large order of french fries and an evil grin?

Can the dogs get sick from using pigeons I find on the street?

I have a 3yo GSP and all the birds I found for sale were 8-10 bucks per bird, so I started trapping them. I went to a few quiet overpasses at night with a salmon net and a mag-light and had 20 birds the first night. Another thing I did was build a 3x3x3 2x2-frame trap, cover it all with chicken wire and cut a 5-6'' hole in each side and zip-tie a funnel made from wire mesh that is just big enough for them to slide through. Leave some long ends at the end of the funnel so the birds get poked if they try to slip out. salt the trap for a few days so they get comfortable with being inside it and get lots of free food. You'll find that they are pretty competitive for food and you'll get good results if you find a good population. I put my trap on a safeway that had a pigeon problem, and they were happy to have me. Just go in and ask a manager. if they say no, find a strip mall and you will get someone who will let you on the roof. Anyhow, both of these ways are great for catching birds depending on the circumstances and pigeon populations. If you have a pup you'd be saving lots of money if you do it yourself, plus it is a lot of fun. I also ended up with too many birds and started selling them for $6 to pay for some of my hunting antics. good luck, and if you have any questions PM me. Keep us posted

If you bought six males and six females and put them in a loft, by this time next year you'd have all the pigeons you want. Think I'm gonna start charging $6 a bird. I've always charged $3 for kill birds. For guys wanting to start a loft, I've given away a lot of birds.

Those guys willing to pay for them and then shoot them all are hurting themself. I haven't bought a pigeon in over twenty years.

BTW, this time next year I'll have racing homer's for sale, young un-flown birds. Those will cost ya. $25 ea. cheapest I've found on the internet is about $75 ea. My breeding stock came from a guy that races them up to 500mi. When I get done, these birds may come home from Redding. Cal or farther!
