power bait?
Is power bait considered "live bait"? I have aften wondered this and argued this with friends at work, does anyone know the actual ODFW views on this topic? Thanks all!

Re: power bait?
No, power bait is not considered live bait.
Interesting question on the Fly board!

Re: power bait?
I don't fish with power bait, but from what others have told me is that when a fish eats it it gets stuck inside there gills and they die  . I don't know, just something I have been told.

Re: power bait?
Fishing with powerbait is the same as fishing with any type of bait, the fish tend to eat it and by the time you realize it and set the hook it's already a good ways down the fishs throat, resulting in a deeply hooked fish.

Re: power bait?
Just Zaq - Bait does not have to be live to be considered bait by ODFW. If you are worried about using powerbait on a "NO BAIT" river, then you should be cause you can't use it (not legally).
Real Live Bait (as in Anchovies, herring etc)can not be used anywhere in freshwater in Oregon. It can only be used in Ocean, bays, estuaries, and tidewaters and it has to be caught in the same water it is being used in.
Interesting - I never thought about sticking a live nightcrawler on a hook as being live bait fishing before, hmmmm......

Re: power bait?
You can't tell me all the spinnning cut plugs in Tillamook today were caught in Tillamook. I understand the no bait rule, but the deal where it has to be caught in the water it is being used? I use sandshrimp in the Clackamas for winters, I know for a fact the bait company is not pumping sand shrimp out of the Clackamas..........

Re: power bait?
Zaq - That's for LIVE bait - you know like breathing and pulling water through their gills, heart pumping etc. Live/dead/live/dead/live dead - get it? It's still all bait!. Plug cuts are usually not in the live category! The only fish that can live with their head cut off is a Sturgeon and that doesn't count!

Re: power bait?
Zaq - Here's two quotes right out of the regs. First is definiton of "bait", second is on use of live FISH for bait:
---------------
Bait: Any item used to attract fish which is not an artificial fly or a lure. Molded soft plastic or rubber imitation worms, eggs, or other imitation baits are considered bait. Scent is not considered bait.
----------------
Use of Fish for Bait
1. It is unlawful to transport live fish between bodies of water.
2. Live fish may not be used or held for use as bait, except live nongame fish may be used in the ocean, bays and tidewaters when taken from the waterbody in which they will be used.
3. Dead fish, preserved fish, or parts of fish, shellfish and fish eggs may be used as bait.
Does this clarify it for you?

Re: power bait?
I have a real problem with the notion that power bait gets stuck in a fish's gills and kills it.
If that were true, I would think there would be an abundance of floaters at all of the put and take lakes when they open up in the spring.
Further, not all fish swallow all bait and die.
Yet another suburban myth.

Re: power bait?
Zaq: since this is not fly fishing related, what are your thoughts about me moving this to the general discussion bb?

Re: power bait?
I have caught a lot of trout on Power Bait over the years and have never caught one with it stuck in their gills. I have found multiple colors in their stomachs when cleaning them though! Including colors I wasn't even using!!!

Re: power bait?
Go to your local hatchery and smell the food they feed the trout there. Now open up a jar of powerbait. Smell kinda the same don't they? That's not a mere coincidence. So does hatchery feed get stuck in the gills and kill trout? Of course not. I don't really use powerbait myself. I prefer catch and release trout fisheries. However, it was designed to attract hatchery trout, which most people wouldn't throw back.
