My first winter in November
I'll just start from the beginning, and tell y'all the whole story.
My father and I had been planning on going fishing Saturday, 11/29 at the coast, but rains came and the trip was delayed till Sunday. Decided to start out on the Wilson up high for some late Nooks. Got there, still dark. River looked real high, but the flashlight showed beautiful color. Stopped at my favorite hole first and started fishin. Drifting rags and Amermans. Hole was ruined when two guys showed up throwing spinners and started casting over my line. It really upsets me that people think that because I'm a kid they're better than me and show me absolutely no respect! So my dad and I moved down to the next hole. Nada! Decided to skip the Wilson at 8:00 with no fish seen. Drove north on 101 from Tillamook and stopped on the Kilchis at the old logging bridge. What a ZOO. 15 guys, no fish. Talked to some nice guys who assisted us in making our way up the road to some beautiful water. It was gin clear and beautiful in the tree lined canyons. Drove nearly 6 miles, saw no sign of the south fork, and had no idea where it was, so we decided to head back down and not take a chance in closed water. Stopped at a beautiful hole, walked up the canyon to the deeper water. Saw 5 fish laying in a deep eddie, had one hit and one follow on a #3 spinner. Those fish werent interested so we moved on. Found another Deep hole with plenty of current downriver a little ways. Tied on a #5 silver and started casting. About tenth cast FISH ON!! Got it up near the bank, saw a dark 15 lb. Nate silver, then he took off. 75 yds. to the head of the hole, almost emptied my spool. got him turned around and led him back down. After a few more minutes the barbless hook was out and I retied and started fishing again. Three more casts fish on again. This fish was smaller, bout ten pounds, but much more fresh. A beauty of a Chum. Was kinda disappointed though. All it did was spin in the line and come to the bank. Oh well, got a good pic and release. BARBLESS hooks rule!! Retied again and got back out there. First cast bam, fish on. This one just took off. Up the hole all the way, just about over the rapids, then broke my line. Dang, lost my only #5 spinner and couldn't hook up on anything else. Oh well. Stopped and looked at a few more holes, saw some fish holding, but decided to head to our secret place. Trout rods and #3 spinners are the rule in this smaller stream. Hiked up a mile, no fish seen, so we kept going. Two miles up, still no sign of fish. Three miles, theres a fish layin in a deep little pocket. Put my lure on his nose a few times, but he wouldnt take. Next few holes were nothin. Then we walked up to another lone fish hangin right in front of some logs. First cast fish on. A big silver, about 12 lbs. Put up a nice fight for a few minutes till the hook popped out. Oh well, got a nice pic of him in the water. Walked up the next few holes nothin. A little further up we happened upon a pair of beautiful chums spawning in the tailout. Then here comes a black back up onto the bed with them. That buck wasnt happy at all, and chased that steelie clear to the end of the taiout before going back up. Now was my chance to get a good cast while he was laying behind the Chums. First cast WHAMMO!!! FISH ON!! A beautiful hatchery chromer steelhead that tore my light gear up. Man, i forgot how good a steelhead feels on the end of a rod. He tired out and I led him to the bank, and my dad tailed him for me. As my dad went to bring him on the bank, the fish twisted, my dad lost his grip , and the fish is back in the water on a monster run downstream. Halfway down the tailout my hook popped out, and the fish was gone! :depressed: Didn't even get a picture. Ah well, dont eat 'em anyway. By now it's 3:45, lights runnin out fast, and we got a 45 minute hike back to the truck. Fished a beautiful deep run with a logjam on the way back down. First cast BAM! FISH ON AGAIN!!! What a beautiful silver. An absolute chromer hen. Man, what a hard fightin fish. Just a beautiful Native. Got two quik, nice pics, and let the fish on her way to make me some more. Fished a few more holes with no success, and got to the truck just as the last bit of light left the sky around 5:00. All in all a good day, 5 for 6, some real beauties. Hopefully i will have pics to post in the next few days.
