new guy with a story
ok, im pretty new to the whole salmon/steelhead scene but ill do my best with what ive got.
It all started on an early september morning. A good buddy and i were fishing a top secret tide water section of the alsea(drift creek hehehe) we had been trolling cutplug herring and been getting slammed by the bullheads, tidewater sculpins, pogeys, what ever you chose to call them. i dig in my bag of tricks, tie up a spinner and put it out. my buddy sticks with herring and i try to find a trolling speed where both baits are in agreement. so we're trolling along and his rod goes down, sculpin on. brings it to the boat and its a double, one about 13" on the front hook with his whole bait in its mouth and a dink on the rear hook. i started looking at what he had just caught and my rod goes down to the water ripping line. im thinking alright lets get this one in the boat. it hasnt really made a run but its dogging down to the bottom like a big fish, maybe it doesnt know its hooked. after about 10minutes of a serious tug-o-war with this mystery fish i can see my leader. i ask my buddy if hes seen it flash or anything, "no." me either, i wonder why not. then i see a greyish tail kicking next to the surface, Jaws? no a 40" sturgeon snagged in the ventral fin. a couple pics and back in the water, only action of the day but still fun.
