Finally enough water

For the spawning salmon that is...Last night while my son was stalking coyotes he heard splashing in the river. Lots of salmon shooting up river. The few I saw when I got down there were just starting to turn red. I live about 6 miles downriver from the mainstem Nehalem headwaters and these are the first salmon I've seen this far up this year. The river was way skinny until just recently. Always a treat to observe these spawners.

I just love to listen and see them shoot up river!

It's my favorite time of year!
Actually, I enjoy watching them upriver, as much or more than I do fishing for them downriver!

You know what I really want to do?
I want to wade in and have them come really close! I wish I could, without risking stepping on the redds. :depressed:

We have one big shoot, where the water gushes into a pool. I can stand really close and watch them struggle up through that channel. I can stay there, mesmerized for hours! (And then along comes Kilchis and scares them off!)
