Small rubber bands...

EDIT...you asked for shrimp....I was thinking sand shrimp....Use small rubber bands to hold the sand shrimp on your hook better.

Small salad shrimp...now..I tossed a few in the microwave (only a few seconds)...that toughened them up a little, then I got them just a little wet again. Put them in a small baggy with some pro cure and cured them up just like you do for salmon eggs.

They worked this fall for the silvers and Chinooks with a side of eggs.

don't have one handy but will do my best.

Whole dyed Bait Prawns,
Tie a double hook rig in 2/0 or 3/0(salmon) or #2's fpr steelhead keeping them 3" apart..(you just have to tie a few to get the distance right)
take a prawn with head and gently staighten it out while sliding a flat toothpick into the mouth and continuing lenghtwise until bait in laying straight, then break off excess if any.
inset bottom hook from underneath in breast area and follow its curveture until bend is exsposed and shank is now parrell to the body.
next follow same step but insert from below near the tail so shank lays flat and within 1/4" of end of tail and then secure with your eggloop from rear hook.
place bead with a corkie #12 then another bead and then a spin-glo. keep the corkie and spin-glo of same color pattern and finish. your ready for plunking.

Sandshrimp are the same way.
if drifting is prefered same tie up but just a bead and corkie above the shrimp.
I know this is complicated but the best i can do without pics.
If fishing just tails(prawn or sandshrimp)..use 1 hook and the eggloop. some stretchy thread helps too when using just prawn tails.
tight lines

You looking at sand shrimp or prawns? I just use an egg loop for sand shrimp and half hitch them up the line. Nothing I`ve found will cure sand shrimp. They seem to turn to mash potatoes if you freeze them. Maybe some body can help on this.

The best solution to this problem is Quality of your bait, if its fresh and kept well cooled with the excess moisture constantly controlled/drained then you got a good product to work with, simple as this...

I second the puff ball or rubber egg capping the tip of the hook, doesnt let the shrimp slide off..

something about the tillamook bait co. shrimp, they've got the shrimp down to a science, very firm fresh, recommended.

Rigging Sandshrimp

For a number of years, we have preferred to use sandshrimp rather than eggs for our bait of choice for steelhead fishing here on the rivers of the Olympic Peninsula.

This isn't necessarily because we feel that shrimp are a better bait. We feel that both perform about equally as well but the shrimp are easier to use when rigged properly.

Below you will find a description of how we like to rig the shrimp onto the hook to provide maximum durability on the hook.

Despite the handicap of the Snoopy Rod (in the Annual Snoopy Rod Classic), Kevin finds an early Olympic Peninsula wild steelhead that couldn't resist his sand shrimp offering.

First of all, break off the tail of the shrimp near the junction of the tail (We use the tail only) and insert the hook (preferably 1/0 or 2/0) nearest the body end of the tail about a third of the way down the tail section.

We then thread the hook down the tail section until the hook point pops out the underside as seen in this picture.
It's important that the shank of the hook is parallel to the long axis of the tail or the tail section will spin wildly which results in twisted leaders.

Next, take your bait loop tied into the hook (remember the last tip??) and place it around the tail section and pull tight, try to allow the loop to rest on a section of the shell rather than in one of the joints, otherwise, it'll have a tendency to cut through the bait.

Voila!! A finished shrimptail bait!

Use this in combination with your favorite drift bobber above the hook. If rigged properly, you can easily get twenty or thirty casts from a tail section like this before rebaiting ... that is of course, if you don't have to rebait after catching a fish!!

You'll find the Pic and same rigging istruction @ "Piscatorial Pursuits" a Web site out of Forks Wa. I use the rig exclusively now. It works, and you don't have to re-rig nearly as often as when using a whole shrimp.
