Default Incredible Rod recovery!

Yesterday a friend and I were "steelheading" on the nestucca on our way to the Kilchis to have a look see when I stumbled accross a rod and reel I had forgotten a week or so ago! A little wet, but none the worse for wear! boy was I grateful to God! I was just kicking myself in the ass that morning for being such a lame head and driving off w/o my pole! You all probably know this, but Im working on making a serious check around my vehicle before I drive off from now on. I still cant beleive it! We drove right up to it in plain sight after a week of laying in the rain! thank you God!

That's pretty good, you must have some secret fishing spot, to have your rod there a week later.

I was out on the salt once, mooching salmon near the bottom on my old boat, which had cruddy fish on rod holders. The rod snagged up, and I had too much drag, and the boat was drifting fast. I saw the holder fail out of the corner of my eye, and dove for it. I was half way in the water, but I got the butt of that rod. And my good fishing buddy Justin had my ankles. Good thing too, could have been a fatal mistake if I was fishing alone, which is one of the main reasons I won't fish the big blue alone.

My second time sturgeon fishing I was still using my friends gear. He didn't like to use rod holders when sturgeon fishing he just leaned the rod against them. Well I was helping him land a nice fish when out the corner of my eye I see my rod go sailing out the back of the boat. We were in the Columbia in 70' of water. I was feeling real bad loosing a friend’s rod. He put on a treble hook and a big lead, and on the second cast snagged the line. We retrieved the rod, the reel was hammered from hitting the boat on the way out and the fish was gone. I would have never thought there was a chance of getting that back.

This is my first time to post...just sent a private message to Deefly. I meant to share my story with everyone. Sorry, Deefly, you'll be seeing it again. It was 5-6 years ago, we were fishing for sturgeon on the Columbia near Warrenton. The tide had just started to change and the boat started to slowly swing around. I was using a 6 1/2 ft custom-made Reeder rod (I saved for a few years to get it)with a Penn 49 reel loaded with Tuffline. I had three friends on board with me and I was trying to cast away from the other lines. As I started to cast, the reel backlashed and the pole rocketed out of my hands. I reached for it as it was going down but missed. I was in shock!
One of my friends cranked up his line and dug out treble hooks. Everyone else did the same and we started to troll. I never did recover my pole. When we returned to the dock, I posted messages in the bait shops describing the pole and also let people know the pole had my name on it. No one ever contacted me. I was heartsick. The next thing you know my friends got out their wallets, pooled their money and gave me enough money to buy an Ugly Stix. There isn't a time when I use that pole, that I don't think of that situation and how fortunate I am to have friends that would do this for me. Needless to say, they are welcome on my boat anytime and I am thankful that they came to my rescue... I can't help but think at some point in time maybe that Reeder rod will come back to me.

I lay things down all the time and walk off, scratch my head all the time. Best recovery I have been a part of: was fishing for sturgeon down river from The Fishery with a friend from his Thunderjet. We had couple of his rod out which were saltwater rigs from California he converted to sturgeon (figured if they worked for tuna ...) so suddenly "BAM" one went down, not the usually "tap, tap, tap" but "BAM" and it actually popped it hard enough it came out of the fish-rite rod holder. Down it went. So a year later, we're fishing in about the same spot but down a bit, current was brisk and we were using the big balls (24 oz plus), when my friend thought he had something. Set the hook but no response ... just some motion. So he took to dragging it up and sure enough, the weight ball had rolled over his overboard rod and held on. It was gunked up a bit and line was messed up but after a weekend in the workshop, back in service. Had I not been in the boat, would not have believed it.

Some time ago, about 20 years ago my dad and bro and I went down to the mouth of the willamet and cloumbia for a day of fishing, riged up and started to troll, about 25 yeards down stream, I got I thought a hit, went and set the hook, my dad said that fish must be sick as it quite fighting, so realed in and to my suprise here come's up a coustom pole with brass guides and a penn 209 real, I put a post at the sporting good store and the tavern and even called the police, to see if anyone hade lost this FINE POLE. No RepLy The pole is over my fireplace and the real get used. Thanks God, P/S:: NO FISH THAT DAY.

True story: While Halibut fishing in Cook Inlet several years ago with Brad Schoenborn and his wife we were anchored in about 125 feet of water about ten miles offshore. Brad's wife put her rod down against the stern gunwhale and before I could say "don't do that" a Halibut hit and the whole works went overboard. Brad was upset and worried about replacing my rod and reel. I told them to relax and worry about it later. A few minutes later Brad got a hit and set the hook. He thought he lost it but kept on reeling. His hook came up with tuff line hooked to it. I grabbed the line and felt the fish still on the business end. I pulled the other end till the rod and reel came aboard and gave them the rod to finish reeling in. A nice 25 pounder! Everybody went home happy.

I left a new fishing rod and reel at Pacific City boat ramp a couple years back. I went home, and OH NO!

I friend of mine from Dallas, Oregon called me. I live in Salem. He used to be my neighbor. He told me that his buddy saw a rod getting soaked by the incoming tide on that same day.

He asked everyone, and no one claimed it, so he took it home. Note that I don't even know this guy, except he is a friend of my old neighbor, Ray Paul.

I told Ray that I left a rod the same day and gave the description to him. A few minutes later, his buddy calls me and asks me to describe in more detail.

The next week, we both met at PC, and I got my rod back. YAHOO!

It's not all bad at PC.
