Default The costs of fishing

Last November,Mrs. Flatfish and I sign up for cell phones. In March I drop mine in the Columbia.Insurance coverage does not cover plopping into the big river.Damage 50 bucks.
Fast foward to last week. After a summer and fall of hard use, replacement phone is dead."Thats OK "says Verizon dude,"you have insurance coverage that covers your phone breaking."Last thursday I get phone, number 3 in a year.Good deal, I think.
Sunday we go fishing.Newbie in the front seat has me kinda nervous the way I always am whem we start a day with a Newbie.I am not paying close enough attention.I clip the phone on my belt.I put my waders on.Mrs. Flatfish backs the boat down.Launch and off we go.That nite I am looking to call someone.Cant find new replacement phone.Look everywhere.Call shuttle people and ask them to peek around the ramp and see if it's there(a long shot I know But might as well try)she does not call back.No news is not good news.My best guess is when I was pulling my waders on,they bumped my phone off the belt and onto the ground. They must be making those waders smaller than they used to.My old waders never fit so tight.Couldn't be my figure...hey look a cookie...mmm ..uh where was I.I am pretty sure the insurance has not changed it's policies of dunking into the rivers. So Sundays trip cost me 50 bucks above the norm.Call it a penalty for being stupid.
What other costs are there?Barring the basic stuff like rods and gas. What are the hidden costs of fishing.I am sure at least 2 weekends at a Bed and breakfast a year. And at least 9 dozen roses. Those are in addition to the regular flowers. The addmittance of guilt flowers. Then there's Alder chips. And the stuff I gotta bribe my bud with so I can get some more of his secret brine(this varies from money to him publicly humiliating me for my own stupidity...he never has to look very hard).Lets not forget about 7-10 disposable cameras and developing fees for newbie trips. What about refinishing the kitchen table after the great super glue incident of 01?
Yall gotta have a few hidden expenses of a year in the field.
Mark and the dog.

Flatfish, it's your own fault for bringing your cell phone fishing. Never do that. It defeats the purpose. I used to have a cell phone. I told my wife as I was leaving to fish, to only call me if it was an emergency. As luck would have it, every time I had a big fish on, my wife would call. I'd of course answer it because it must be an emergency. "Honey, can you pick up some toilet paper on your way home." Believe it or not, it's a good thing that your cell phone fell in. Fishing is about getting away. A cell phone just brings it back to you. I no longer have a cell phone. I'm much happier as a result. Cell phone's are evil. God is trying to tell you something. As for the rest of it, those are not expenses. They are investments!

"Hidden expenses"? Mine are right out where I can see them. Take Kwikfish fer instance. Are you going to buy one color? Heck no! And suppose you find the one color that works that day are you going to have just one of them? What about sizes? Just the K14s? NOT! And I need a box to carry them in and I need some divers to get them down to 30', and, well you get the drift.

What happens if they are hitting wobblers instead of Kwikfish? D'OH! Alvins? Clancys? Ten Spots? Colors?

Then there are the rods and reels. Drift rod. Bobber rod. Float and jig rod. Back bouncer. Hot-shot rod. Do you like to change reels from one rod to another every time you fish a different style? Me either, so, reels to match!

Boats! Tow rig! Lodging!

TUNA!!!

Hidden costs..........yeah right.

Hidden expenses... Anybody have their tires slashed at a boat launch? Four new BFG's cost me $530 two years ago. Got clipped by a milk truck on highway six in '98, put in a ditch and broke my favorite Ambassadeur Black Max steelhead reel. Priceless, as they are discontinued. Clutch went out the same year in Tillamook, can't remember cost, but expensive down there. Ever buy shrimp in Portland when the weather is bad on the coast? I bought some at Fisherman's that were sketchy, so I bought some more at the Guide Shop, not as sketchy. Stopped by Tillamook Bait and found some beauties, so I ended up buying eighteen-dozen shrimp for a solo trip. Stupid, I know... Forgot the boat plugs, broken oar, gunked-up reels, etc...
