Well---I guess it's time for a fishing story for the first timer, Eh? I've been lurking around here for awhile, and have enjoyed the info, and entertainment. Great site! Fish story, wel, Uhh-----Here goes:
Some years ago, I was working with a fella who had just moved here from Bellingham Wa. He was alway's full of Sturgeon stories, with a freezer full to back them up.
Anyway--Anyway, I told him to put his money where his mouth is, and show me his secret to catching these 5'+ Sturgeon. (he claimed to never hook less than a 5 footer) yea right!
So after procuring some fresh eel's for bait, we headed for Bradford Island. When we arrived, I witnessed a spectical I have never seen since. Huge Sturgeon were porposing everywhere, gorging themselves on the fresh arrival of eel. One Sturgeon he pointed out was Moby Dick! Ha Ha. So he shows me how to rig, and I cast this mess as far as I can via one of his 15" bambo rods. I set the rod up after I mend the line, to wait it out. No sooner done, and my rod tip is is bouncing lke there's no tommorow! Nothing like any past Sturgeon strikes I'd ever had! My partner says "when the line goes slack, reel up the slack and hit it like there's no tomorrow". Upon doing what the Master instructed, I was jolted with the pure joy of a screeming drag! After a lengthy battle, we banked the denison with his homemade lasso, A keeper, just under 6'. (was Legal then) During all of this, my partner's pole had been dancing also, at the time he said to forget it, as after we land mine the fish would still be there. (on his pole) Well shure enough, after we take care of mine and secure it, he reels in some slack, and the fight is on! Some time later another 70" is on the bank! After discussing how much is enough, we decided to call it a day, and leave some for the next guy. Anyway I've enjoyed many trips since then, but have never experienced the bite like that particular day in June.

Welcome aboard!
Loved the feeling you described! The thrill of the catch!
At Gary's funeral, we watched a clip of a film with La Mear that he made, years ago.

Big sturgeon! Geesh!

I'll have to do that someday.... over my doctors dead body!

Oh well!

Good story. I have had good days at sturgeon fishing but not that good.

Welcome aboard the board.

Love those good sturgeon stories! Years ago when you could fish on the Oregon or Washington side of the river, my husband hooked one of those 6 footers that you could actually keep! We were camped on the Washington side across and downstream from Bradford Island. It was about midnight when the ringing bell woke me up, I came falling out of the pup tent and about broke my leg trying to get to the pole. After a little yelling for my husband to get up, he fought the huge fish into submission. Then trying to get down the bank and get the fish up in the dark was quite a feat in itself!! I still have a picture of that fish somewhere!!

Welcome aboard! Great sturgeon story. Haven't used a bamboo rod in decades. Sure brings back memories.
