Default Eagle Creek Report

I figured the rain would be moving the fish on Eagle Creek, and I was right. I went down below the hatchery this afternoon. I checked out several pools, but didn't see any fish. As I pondered this situation, I found out why. The fish were moving up too fast to spend any appreciable amount of time in any pool. Every minute or two, one would zip up the creek and be gone in no time. How does one fish in this situation? You only have about ten seconds every couple of minutes in which the pool actually has a fish in it. So I parked my self at the tailout, and cast a spinner in front of each fish that came up. I only got one, maybe two casts at each fish. Then it was a wait until the next one came up. No point in flailing empty water and risking not having my lure in front of them when they came through. I probably had 200 fish fly past me in 3 hours. Of those, three bit and were landed. The first one was a big wild fish that just hammered the spinner, but then basically gave up, and came to the bank in about 15 seconds. He was a bit battered looking. My second fish was a nice hatchery buck that put up a good battle. He was red, but the meat was still firm and good color when I filleted him. He'll taste good. He must have just turned red. My third fish was another big wild fish that again hammered the spinner, but unlike the other one, fought very hard, jumping a few times. He went back in too. There were still a few bright fish swimming up, probably 1 out of ten. There were also some really ate up fish swimming up. They'd spend a few minutes resting in the hole before they continued their journey. I don't blame them. They looked pretty worn out. But the bright fish and most of the reds just rocketed through the holes. I'm glad we had some rain to bring them up. And I'm glad I stood and watched the hole for a few minutes, because I almost left without putting my line in. It looked like there was nothing there, but that's only because they didn't stack up like they did the past couple of years when I fished it. They must have looked at the clock and said "I'm late!!!" Any particular pool probably held a fish for about ten seconds out of every 2 to 5 minutes.

Good report. I fished Bonnie and below Eagle Fern yesterday, and just hooked one at the mouth, which got off. The creek still had very little water.

Foxer: yes, those were silvers, but Eagle Creek is open for silvers until Nov. 31. Check your regs.

What??? Your calendars don't have Nov. 31 on them?? Maybe that's why I was able to pick that calendar up so cheap last January! Good thing you let me know, or I might have been a day late for Christmas.

hey craig,
unless they slipped a reg change by me the sandy is closed for silvers.
i went down to the end of the island at eagle creek today hoping to get a steelie on the jigs i've been tying. no such luck. boy has that hole changed up from the spring flooding. i barely recognized it. anyway, i couldn't even interest the silvers that were showing up. saw some old boots and some surprisingly fresh silvers milling about in a nice little back eddy. i saw a few guys carry out some fish though so biters can be had.

Y'all can check the ODFW website attached to the ifish front page. It has the current regs and closures.
