True story
This happened in the early 60's, three fishing buddies went salmon fishing on the Columbia over at Rainier, Ore.
They being in their early 20's, took beer with them, and were enjoying the day. After a while they became somewhat drunk and decided to have a contest to see who could cast their spinning glows the furthest. Well, one of the fellows was sitting on a rock when one of his friends gave a heave with his rod and the spinning glow caught the fellow sitting on the rock just below his nose (in the middle) and of course raised him up off the rock. The spinning glow went into his nose past the barb. Now, instead of going to Longview to the doctor they decided to drive to Vernonia, (their home) and see the doctor there. While on the way home the fellow who
was hooked in the nose, was 21, the other two were 20, so he told them to stop at a tavern, as he wanted to get more beer, to keep the pain down. When he walked into the tavern, with this spin-glow hanging out of his nose, the bartender, said " I'm not even going to ask." and gave him a case of beer.
Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, however, his buddy had a heck of a back-lash in his reel.

Re: True story
I went fishing with my dad and a friend of his many moons ago on the Sandy for winter steelies. The day was alternating between rain and snow, and the catching wasn't very good.
He had me using an older Ambassadeur levelwind which wasn't very forgiving for new casters, and sure enough I got myself a big ol' bird nest. I stepped away from the water some and sat down on a rock to dig the mess out. Dad came over to help, as there wasn't much going on in the river. The buddy kept fishing.
During the backcast, the buddy got his hook tangled up in a bush behind him. Figuring it wasn't bad, he gave it a good pull to get it freed. Upon jerking the bush yelled out a pretty good yell, as he has the "bush" by the left ear, and my dad's head was jerking back from his work on my reel. The point of the hook penetrated well into the cartilage of his ear to the point where the barb was buried, but not so far that it could be forced out the other side. In short, he was stuck.
They cut the line, and as they were not able to force the hook either way they continued to fish for a couple hours longer with this pink yarn hanging from my dad's ear. Being as he is about as rednecked as they come it brought great joy to see him so adorned.
The ear never bled until we made it back home and Mom convinced him to go to the hospital. By then the blood had returned to normal flow, just in time for the surgical procedure that freed the hook (and a good deal of his blood) from the ear.
We never did fish the Sandy again, and it wasn't until late last year that I gave it a try at Oxbow. I'll have to find some brave souls to show me some spots up there, and maybe I'll recognize one of them as where dad got pierced. Just don't laugh at my hat with the ear flaps.

"Vernonia." That explains it. (I had a buddy from there. He pronounced it "venereal.") :shocked: (But he was actually from Banks, I think.)
Have you noticed a common thread in these first two misadventures?
Friends don't let friends get backlashes. :grin:

Re: True story
 True Stories:::
Being rased in Tigard Or, I was able to fish many coastal rivers. On one day out I was fishing Big Creek, brought home a nice fish, my dad said where did you go, and I told him.
My mother said you should take your dad to your fishing spot, ( Dad was 76 ) not able to see real good and going into the spot where I fish it was still dark outside, so with lantern in hand we took off from the parking spot and headed down stream, we came to a 2 foot spill way, I said to my dad, hold on and I well give you a hand, he said no I well use my net to help me get across, The next thing I here is hay my net is swimming up stream, 38 pounder in side of it, I said DAD YOU CANT KEEP IT, Well I well leave it up to all of you what became of that fish. Dad is now fishing with the lord, as for the fish I well never tell.
