Re: Spinner maker
You might try BC spinners in Oregon City just south of fishermans marine supply.

Re: Spinner maker
If you are making the magnum sized salmon spinners, then a wire forming tool is nice.I make trout and steelhead spinners with a leatherman and a snips.Faster and easier than a wire forming gadget. If you want to make steelie/trout stuff with a tool, try the Worth brand unit from Joes.I bought the exact same thing from mortac a couple years ago for double or triple what Joes is selling them for.
Good Luck.

Re: Spinner maker
i've been making spinners using only a pair of needle nosed pliers and dikes (strictly for wire cutting). i get the half and fast pre-done wire loops. slide all your pieces on, bend the wire back 180 degrees, put in a swivel, then do two full turns underneath and clip the excess with the dikes. it's not the prettiest finish, but it beats paying bucks for the tool and they catch fish. fish don't really care how pretty the spinner is as long as the blade turns properly and they like your colors.

Re: Spinner maker
I just use the dikes and needle nose, too. Once you get the hang of it, its simpler than a tool, except for the occasional treble hook in the thumb flesh. I also went down to Sears and got a miniature pair of wire cutters that cut the wire tag right at the base so the loop looks pretty.

Re: Spinner maker
Lead Master makes a pair of pliers that have a rounded side and a flat side, cutters and splir ring on the end. They also have lead cutter and punch. One tool does it all and you can even justify buying one

Re: Spinner maker
fishnxtc I would go in to BC angling post in the Oregon City shopping center. Its just down form fishermans to the south. They sell a good spinner maker there and all the things you need to make them.

Re: Spinner maker
Here is a great tip I thought I would pass along for making spinners. There is no need to use dikes or any wire cutter when making spinners. After forming the eye and making a couple of turns around the shaft with the wire, hold the spinner at the eye with your needle nose pliers and use your other hand and bend the wire up and down vertically until it breaks. The wire will break every time exactly at the shaft and you get a clean edge that will not cut your line. Much cleaner and easier. A little tough to explain, but nobody that I showed this tip to has ever gone back to using a wire cutter. Enjoy

Re: Spinner maker
Hey fish, you can get buy with most of the wire turners out there. They have some pretty inexpensive ones. They have parts on there to preform the wire with a nice clean round circle if that's what you desire.
I just may have an extra old herter's laying around downstairs. I've been building my own spinners for years, and do believe I bought 2 from a guy who used to produce them years back. Let me check and will get back to you. Will make you a deal on vise and shipping if I can find it. Its just like the ones you see in catalogs for $60, just doesn't have the fancy built in trays to hold components (which I can't see anyone using anyways).
Will let you know. This is a heavy vise, but indestructible.

Re: Spinner maker
Thank you all for your post. I have seen the one at BC angling. But the the plastic seems a little cheap. I was watching the girl behind the counter make spinners the one she was using was all metal and looked real sturdy. I'm going to take a spinner making class. Made after the class I will have a better idea on what I'll need. Again thank you all for your input...Chris

Re: Spinner maker
I have two types of vises and the pliers SturgeonMike talked about. I have a work bench set up with one of the vises and all my supplies. I end up buying the prewound wires from Halve Fast and using my pliers most of the time.

Re: Spinner maker
Hey Take Down, that's a good tip, I can't believe I haven't tried that before. I guess there are still some things I could learn about fishing, besides what they put in that egg cure!

Re: Spinner maker
Question for all you spinnermakers,
I have all the parts to make some spinners but:
Is there any place to but the bells and inserts that the Blue Fox Vibraxs have? No problem getting the #5 French blades.
I would like to build some #5's. Chartuse(sp) color.
Mail order would work. Don't have any spinner building place in the area that I live.
Thanking you in advance,
fop

Re: Spinner maker
Best thing for spinner making are the cone nosed pliers ... $29 at fishermans or $6 at a crafts store... perfect eyes and twists everytime.. . I make almost all my spinners on the boat so i like to have something portable, and they turn out just as good if not better thant what i can make on my bench version.
