Re: Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
I believe there are only about 100 or 110 OSP game cops so they are spread thin. Its a big state. I don't get checked that often either but every so often one of those guys will pop up out of nowhere and surprise me.

Re: Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
Ok -- let's do the math here --- 18,000,000.00 divided by 110 wardens = somebody isn't getting their moneys' worth -- If you find one of our wardens let him know he/she is really making $163,000 a year -- after they quit laughing explain how we came to these numbers -- then after they quit crying, let's find out where it really goes-----

Chukrchaser
The amount in question is for the biennium (two years). That would make it 80,000 a year. Now start adding up things like a patrol car, fuel, maintenance, insurance, training equipment, administration, and those cool looking uniforms and the price is not that high.

Re: Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
Subtract the 46% overhead charged by the state on salaries and you get a salary of $43,200. Not exactly big bucks

A total of 115 current sworn officers make up the OSP Fish and Wildlife Division. Of those, 21 positions are supported by General Fund monies. Sixty-four are supported by an $11.5 million biennial contribution from ODFW. The remaining 30 positions are funded through a combination of lottery dollars and other state and federal monies.

Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
I was down in Salem attending the E-board meeting FRiday (9th) along with some other stuff and some Fish related news came up that i found VERY intresting.
1 house sub-committee (forgot which one) recommended to the E-board that they allocate 85K to the -->IDAHO eletricity Utility so it can release 300,000 chinook salmon smolts into the Snake river.
(i wondered why Oregon is paying for a Idaho utility to do this)
SECONDLY, I caught the back half of a discussion about the hatcheries and one idea being kicked around was the merrits of Public V.s Private hatcheries in terms of Cost vs effectivness.
In sub committee i would ignore that but this was in full committee, so mabie there are some ideas floating around toward this...anyone hear any rumors about privitizing hatcheries?????
And the current members of the House Revenue committee are very opposed to segmenting the budget, like liscense fee's goes only to hatcheries and stuff. They really like the idea of a massive general fund.
The revenue committe NOw mind you is not containing the new elected members so mabie the posistion will change once the new session starts but i would really be on gaurd for hatchery cuts. There is a massive budget shortfall and even if we increase our taxes in the special election i was told by Kitzahber's CHIEF OF STAFF that it will not cover this years budget shortfall or prohibit any cuts now or in the next budget
BE Careful what you vote for and the spin that being applied...and you hatchery hawks look sharp, that money's going to be very tempting for the legis' to take.

Re: Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
Also i was looking through a segment of the budget and did you know Oregon Allocated 18mill to Fish and Game ENFORCEMENT. Now i for one dont mind that but in my 6 years fishing in Oregon i have NEVER NEVER been stopped or even seen a Fish and game Warden in the field; I grew up in FLA and averaged a check a trip literally some times twice in the same day even way out in some secret fishing spot.
The only fish and game people i EVER see are the boat ramp fish counters and do they even qualify as game wardens? I dont know but 18million seems like allot of money, i wonder if its all lost in the "desks" and none in the field WArdens.
mabie some one could find a warden and get their take. (other than they need more money)

Re: Salmon in Salem, and the E-board
never the less that allot of money to spend on 115 officers!!
I BET its the State ODFW "desk jobs" where your job is the same as 10 others that suck up most of the money allocated. IT's all about the beaucracy size and preservation, and seeing that oregon elected TEd G it must mean we like overbloated goverment "desk jobs" sucking up money that could be better spent.
