Default Klowser Minnows?????

I just got back from visiting my brother, who happens to be one of those entomologist type flyfishermen. He was showing me some of his latest flies he's tied and these Klowser Minnow's looked like something that a steelhead would go after. So he showed me how to tie them. So before I go get the stuff I need, I was wondering if anyone had ever tried a KM under a bobber, rather than a maribou jig, for steelies? I'm always looking for new ways to attach myself to these silver bullets, so any info would be appreciated.

Julie

Julie..
Thats not a half bad idea.. I am positive it would work especially in faster water.. Try pink and white maybe with a 4 inch seducer worm off the back.. I'd say go for it especially in low clear water when a big jig made of marabou might be too much.. Just one small thing though It's Clouser not Klowser

Thanks Rob. I really am a silly girl at times. I thought some of the natural colors might work pretty well too. I've had a bit of luck dropping #16 and #18 brassies below maribou jigs first thing in the morning and at dusk.
I messed up my back a few years ago in a car accident, so flyfishing is difficult for me, but flies have sooooo many applications. I always seem to revert back to them.
I've also wondered if a person could tie up one of these on a large enough hook to entice an aggressive fish like Tuna????

A clouser minnow will work under a bobber, but you may find that you will have to add weight to cast, and it won't hang right.

A clouser is a deadly fly on almost any fish that eats baitfish. A tan and white clouser has been suggested as a candidate if you were trying to come with a single fly that would catch fish anywhere in the world.

tuna on a clouser minnow? yup. steelhead? yup. I'd guess that there isn't a species out there that a Clouser minnow couldn't fool. But I think marabou is probably better for steelhead jigs because it breathes better than bucktail when suspended under a float. The clouser minnow gets its action from the jigging of a hand-retrieved line

floatnfish

marabou breathes better IF there is substantial water movement in dead water or when the line in under tension marabou will flatten out against the hook. Bucktail always flairs out. I'd be willing to bet if fished side by side a marabou jig would NOT outfish a bucktail jig but thats just a theory i have... I'd guess that bucktail jigs aren't popular because hardly anyone has ever used them

think about the kind of water that is bobber fished for winter steelhead. Nice moderate to slow pace. Marabou will move quite a bit in those subtle currents but it won't mat down. Bucktail, like hairwing flies, is meant for fast water.

maybe I assumed we were talking about winter steelhead and slower currents, since it IS that time of year

Big fish eat little fish (rule #3). Give it a try and let us know how you do.

As soon as I get back from Phoenix I plan on trying some different colors. The more I think about it, I bet I'd be better off drifting in faster water rather than under a bobber.

So what colors do you guys think I should try. I was thinking about light pink or purple, tiny bit of red gill w/ white belly and maybe some krystal flash down the sides. I'm definitely going to try the natural colors though. I'll post some pics of the ones I've tied when I get back home.

Thanks for all the input.

I like to fish a chartuese clouser minnow for striped bass on a flyrod, they are about the most popular and deadly for them. but have not used them for steelies. I don't see why they would not work.
