First Siletz Salmon
I fished the Siletz Saturday for the first time. The day started off great, there was a herd of Elk at the boat ramp (Chinook Bend), what an awesome sight first thing in the morning.
Well off to fishing, we had been in the water about an hour when I hooked my first fish, nice mint bright 12 pound Coho. :depressed: Fun to catch, but back in the water it went. The funny thing was I just said to my fishing partners that this was the ninth salmon trip this year without a fish for me, and then the rod tip buries! About two hours later we were coming back through the same spot and I hooked my second fish of the day, this one ended up being a nice bright 20 pound chinook.....in the boat he went!
We only say a couple of other fish caught all day. One on a bobber (well known guide here that sells salmon eggs), and another by spinner which was about a 40 pounder but it went back in as it was very dark.
Now for the important part, the where and how. We were trolling spinners about two miles above Chinook Bend, there is a straight stretch with a line of pilings in the water on the left side as you are going upstream. Most of the fish we saw rolling that day were also in this area. I was using a "Teespoon" spinner with orange body and a #7 brass blade, two ounces of lead on a dropper and we trolled very very slow against the tide. I lost that spinner later in the day.....and it was the only one like it that I had. Now I have to go shopping! Oh darn.
Nice weather, elk herd, one native coho, one chinook to go home with, all in all a pretty good day in the wonderful Northwest! Hope to do it again soon.
Scott

Re: First Siletz Salmon
Thanks for sharing, Sounds like you had an awsome day. Were you trolling Blue fox's?? And were the many fish rolling?? That tide water stretch is such a big area to fish. Lots of places for fish to hide.

Re: First Siletz Salmon
It was an aluminum drift boat, with two passengers, one male and one female (she was the one that caught the fish. Was that you?? I saw two of you guys that day, the other was a sled.

Re: First Siletz Salmon
Al Fish, We did try Blue Fox spinners, there were three of us in the boat, and we tried just about everything, bobbers, QwikFish, spinners, but the TeeSpoon spinner was the only one that worked. There were lots of fish rolling, mostly in the morning and mostly upriver from Chinook Bend.

Re: First Siletz Salmon
Grant,
My boat was the blue and white Sylvan, there were three of us in the boat, I mentioned to you that we had the same bait in the cooler. We were trolling spinners at the time and stopped and watched you guys. I'm sure we will see you out there again, next time I'll stop and say hi.
