Morons everywhere
Where are the State Cops when you need them? Today I witnessed at least a dozen people involved in illegal activites. One idiot caught, killed and kept a wild silver in a river that is closed to fishing for silvers . There aere also a bunch of people fishing in closed waters. Cant people read? . I also saw a guy fishging in a closed stream in an area that is closed to angling even when the stream is open for steelhead. This bozo was casting a spoon to chinook that were on thier nests. I was stunned at the sheer volume of stupid people I saw today. Whats with people these days? Is there something in the air that cause people to do stupid things?

Re: Morons everywhere
Yes, I am sure hoping you did report them! How awful! Did you say anything to the guy bonking the silver?

Re: Morons everywhere
I think with all the publicity there are a lot of new fisherman and the rules and regs are confusing to people.

Re: Morons everywhere
Willie, were all those people on the Alsea by chance? We went on a scouting mission today and saw a lot of the same activities that you speak of, and yes, we called OSP.

Re: Morons everywhere
They need to take there fishing rights away from them for awhile. Back in the 70s if you got caught doing something like snagging thats what would do.

Re: Morons everywhere
Did you drive by and just look or did you try to educate these people, maybe by notifying them that what they are doing is illegal. I have noticed that alot of people that have never fished just want to, and they dont even realize that there are certain regs. for certain rivers. Maybe they just moved here or are on vacation and they made a mistake. I personally would walk up to the person making the violation, make a comment to the effect of what they are doing is illegal and then listen to there reaction if they know what they are doing is illegal or dont care what I said then I would call the State Police. Not everyone was lucky enough to be taught to fish at an early age or by a successful fisherman everyones got to start somewhere and that usually means alot of mistakes. Im sure if you were self taught or totally green and absolutely knew nothing about fishing but wanted to catch fish you would probobly buy all the right equipment do everything exactly right and never break even the smallest law or ethical value. Fishing is for fun and comradery and peace and being with nature. It really burns me to see people jump on there soap box and complain about there fellow Americans why not take a little time out of your busy fishing schedule and try and educate or help one of those people understand the regs instead of just calling the police on them. There is no experience (to me) like helping someone enjoy and learn about the fishing experience for there first time, or helping some with something they may be doing wrong or illegal, most of the time they are very appreciative. My .02.

Re: Morons everywhere
I still shudder to think of two things that I have done. One that was illegal, and one that very well might have been. I simply didn't know, and obviously didn't care enough to read regs, then.
I simply thought rivers were for fishing. My Dad had always taken me, and when I was on my own, I just... well, didn't look at rules!
Once, I was supposed to meet my Dad on the Wilson, and couldn't find him, so I went to the Trask. Looked over at a killer hole with salmon everywhere.
Turns out, I was fishing the Dam hole, while it was closed. Lucky me. The officer came down, and helped me find a better spot, after telling me it was closed. I'm sure my tears helped me to get out of a ticket.
Another time, in high school, a girlfriend and I drove to the coast. We simply found a river, and started to fish. I didn't know what river it was, nor what the regs were. We just fished! To this day, I don't know if it was open or not. I shudder to think! We didn't catch anything, but we got a couple of odd stares.

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">The answer - they're a quick call away on the TIP line!
I really hope that you will post your 'Paul Harvey rest of the story' here soon. By witnessing these actions and in turn doing nothing about them, you really are condoning and supporting them.
Complaining here on ifish about unethical and illegal actions probably does very little to get rid of these activities (you're preaching to the choir so to speak). Nut up and either go have a talk with these losers or call the cops.

Also went on a scouting trip to the Alsea, saw a ticket being issued to someone fishing the North Fork when it was not open.

Re: Morons everywhere
Tailout
It is not my responsibility to educate people on what the regs are, nor is it Willierowers! I will let people know if there are right there, but they should know what they are doing or pay the price for ignorance, by the way I think a cop will tell ya that ignorance is no excuse and write you up, as he should. As for people being on their soapbox, I think people are just tired of dealing with morons and it is not worth taking a chance of this moron packing a weapon and taking offense to you telling him he is breaking the law.

Re: Morons everywhere
IMHO,
If you have the ability to report them(cell phone) but fail to, you are also part of the problem, not the solution. Not trying to be crass here, but telling us about it wont do much more than angry the masses. How hard is it to talk on your phone as your driving away or pull your rig over to the side and make that little call to the TIP line? Just a suggestion, i see a lot of talk about what should have been done and very little about what was done. I love hearing about snaggers stupidity, but moreso i love hearing about these idiots being caught. Makes me sick, i only get to go out fishing a handful of times a year maybe 10 or 12 if i am lucky, and if i were to lose this privelege not only because people who are doing the illegal activities but those who choose to turn the other cheek, i would be infuriated, probably would go out and fish anyway. Im not saying vigilante justice here, but just a simple phone call...
I guess they are here, better start looking for some free time to get to the Alsea

Re: Morons everywhere
I know people get irritated when you need the cops however one state cop has a huge amount of area to cover. Yes, illegal fishing sucks, however keep in mind that they have much more important things to do such as a wife beaten by her drunk husband, or chasing people who are feeding kids drugs, or sitting on a major problem area in the windy cold weather waiting for a repeat offender in the fish and game world. Even they would like more help out there and would like to please us all, but the budget does not allow for more troopers.

Re: Morons everywhere
If they were fishing with expensive gear, you have a duty to try and Bust them! Unfortunately, some people in Oregon still have to fish, snag, poach, and disregard the law for food. This happens more than you care to admit.

Re: Morons everywhere
I did call the State Police. They said they had an officer in the area. I also talked to one guy who was fishing in closed water. I asked him if he knew that the river was closed. He then gave me some attitude. After that I just drove by the people and shook my head. I figured I would just let the Police deal with the people.
Yes it was the Alsea. We went down low looking for some steelhead. My buddy and I were being lazy so we plunked spin glows and eggs.Had a couple good take downs but no hookups unless you count a Searun Cutthroat.

Re: Morons everywhere
'Lighten up Francis!'
Your original post makes no mention of any action you took after witnessing the wrongdoings. Therefore, you shouldn't be too surprised when people call for action.
Kudos to you for actually doing something. Now, it you aren't literary enough to write a story that depicts what actually happened, don't get mad at others for that.
