jcw7260 - Not even a handshake and an introduction first? How about a fishing story? It is customary, you know.
For an egg primer, go to the home page and, under "Featured Pages" click on Scott Amerman: How to cure salmon eggs.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
the best way and cure that ive found is the one that the guide shop puts out.
I will tell you how to cure them up :
first you take a butter knife and kindof split the skein lenthwise, then take a pair of scissors and completely split the skein into two halves. cut up the baits into bait size pieces. lay them out on newspaper. sprinkle some of the cure on them, roll them around and repeat the process again, let them sit for a minute and you will see them kindof wrinkle up, if they dont add a little more cure. next, put them in a zip lock bag, only fill the bag 1/2 full and lock it. put the eggs on the counter and you will see them juice up. roll them around every hour. for a drier bait, take out of the cure in 4 to 6 hours and let them dry on a bath towel overnight, for a juicy egg and messy, leave them in the cure and freeze them or use them the next day. they will keep in the fridge for days.
remember: the cure in their bag will do up approx 20 lbs of eggs.
if you want to see what they look like go to eggscars here in ifish.net and you can see mine! I hope this helped.
If you want futher instructions e-mail me.
their cure is called oregon eggs, this is the best ive ever tried or will use.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
Pro-Cure makes a good cure just follow the directions.Scott A"s cure is an excellent cure there is complete instructions with pictures in here just do a search.I've saved it in my favorites.Thgere is also a cure I got from Bob's board.4 quarts of water 1 cup of borax, one cup of uniodized salt, one cup of sugar and two tablespoons of pro-cure color(the color not the cure) bring all this to a boil stiring constantly.Let cool.split the skeins and then quater them, put the eggs in the COOL cure and swish around for 15-20 mins.Take them out RINSE !!! them off then dry them till there the way you like then freeze'em or use them it takes awhile but its worth it,they get wrinkled looking but that goes away don't soak them for more then 20 min's or you will be sorry less is better 15 min is fine unless there big Chinook eggs. Amermans cure take awhile also but its well worth it.Pro-cure jar method is the easy way to go.Just follow the inst. Are you  yet. Then here's another steelhead really like Boraxed eggs the best.I believe.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
I've been doing a lot of reading of these fishing sites lately. The consensus seems to be that Amerman's Eggs cure is the best commercial egg cure.
If you want to make your own for very little money here is a home made one I read about. Combine equal parts of powdered sodium sulfite, non-iodized salt, and sugar. Then add Pro Glow radiant red coloring powder in the amount that will get your eggs the color you like. And add a pinch of MSG to it all and mix it up really well. Then use just like the commercial cures.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
I forgot to add that it also said to mix up the eggs in a large bowl after putting the powder mix on the eggs and carefully stir it around to cover the eggs well as it juices up a lot. Then put it in your refridgerator after its sat in the bowl for awhile and most of the juice will absorb back into the eggs within a couple days. That way they have enough time to cure up good and have more egg juice in them to milk out when fishing. Hope that is helpful.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
excuse me, but I forgot something else. After the eggs have cured in the refridgerator for 2 or 3 days and you drain and pad them off, leave some of them wet as is for fishing in tidewater areas for salmon and dry some others up firm for fishing in faster water. The wet ones milk out better in the slow water and the drier ones last better in fast water.

Re: Help with salmon eggs
Forget what they say!
Just send them to Jennie, and I'll do them up for you real nicely.

I'll also demonstrate, by way of pictures of fish caught, just how well they work, thanks to Scott Amerman's cure.
Really, it's no problem... Just send them to me, and you won't need to worry about the mess of curing eggs!

Re: Help with salmon eggs
quote:"Combine equal parts of powdered sodium sulfite, non-iodized salt, and sugar"
If you mix up the same of all ingredients your cure will separate.
The best Ive found is by mixing up 6 cups sodium sulfite, 3 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 cups morton salt. You can use any bait dye that you want to with this mixture. Your eggs will cure up great. you can get your sodium with the dye in it already @ www.guideshop.com it does not cost much and you will have enough cure to do up to 40 lbs of eggs.
I hope that this helped you out. they have different colors there. I mix the red with the pink and get a great egg.
