Catch anything?
Who tells the truth when you are fishing and go by a boat and they ask if you got anything? I have one set answer and it is "No". They can see me land a fish, and I still say we got nuthin.
Fishing with Smokey on saturday we go by a boat and get the big question, I shake my head no, turn around and look and smokey in the back of the boat is flashing this guy fingers. I am not sure if he telling the guy to steal 3rd, or if we got fish in the boat.

It's a good thing you didn't just have one fish. Those finger signs can start trouble out there in the middle of that battle zone!

BOE -
From what I have read it sounds like you are merely doing the "conditioned response" thing after so many attempts.
Al la Marty peterson, another fun thing to do if someone has seen you catch one and they ask, go to the cooler or fish box and bring the same fish up four or five times at different angles! Keep picking it up and saying "we go this one early, this one a bit later and here's the one you just saw. Get big eyed looks that way. This is great when things are especially slow.

How about some kind of special Ifisher sign to tell eachother if the bite is on? You see the official Ifish sticker and give the sign...

Re: Catch anything?
Yes and no, If I were fishing in a quiet little hole and didn't want company I'd probably say "been pretty slow" or something to that effect, not an outright lie. But if I were trolling a place like T-bay along with about a thousand other people moving around I'd tell the truth.
Your attitude is part of what disgusts me about salmon and steelhead fishing. My problem is I'm an addict to all kinds of fishing depending on the season. It was so nice to take two weeks off from the fall chinook madness on the Col. and go to Siltcoos lake for perch and bass where you can meet a total stranger and trade honest info on where what and when is working the best! When we came back and got on the Col. again it was quite a rude awakening to see the attitudes, the dumb or just inconsiderate people, the yelling and all around crap you get when you fish for salmon and steelhead. It amazes me that there are so many people on ifish (3000+) that make nicey nicey on the board and I have met some of you on the rivers when you didn't know I was a member and are just plain unfriendly.
To answer the Q, YES, I will tell the truth 95% of the time.
Sorry about the rant, I feel better now!

Geez, Smj, take a chill pill!
I was, and suspect others were, talking about what we do in jest and/or with the rude "entitlement" mentalitied people who insist on knowing exactly what you are doing and then hog your spot.
If people are friendly I am still not going to disclose everything, but nobody is talking about being rude...

Re: Catch anything?
Usually kinda but sometimes not really. If it is Tilly(which I never fish anymore cause it's a zoo,and I don't have a sled so i cant fish proper anyway)then I say NO.Same for spring nates on my fav quiet rivers. But cohos on the big water,or hatchery steelhead yep I tell the truth.Unless I am using some weird outfit, then I lie to keep the gear a secret.Folks never consider if their own lack of skill has anything to do with the lack of fish in the bottom of the boat. With drifting eggs or spinning herring that is usually the case. But under some conditions, the gear fishes itself and is the big difference.I don't want the word to srpead so I am forced to say NO.Sturg are split into 2 categories
1 Hogs, yeah I tell the whole fishery is about shad parts so not too many secrets here.
2-Keepers maybe.Kelly point in January yeah I tell.A secret bucket that I have to myself,no way Jose.I zipperlip all the way to weighting the rope they are hanging on to hide the fish.Don't need some loudmouth putting GPS coordinates on the internet of my BUDDIES' secret spot. That would be a good way to not get invited back.

Re: Catch anything?
If you ask how well I am doing, I will tell you. I will also share methods that work for me. I guess I just want to see everybody have fun and catch fish!
It might be different if I were bank fishing a spot and did not want the added pressure. Mostly I boat fish in areas that can stand the pressure. If I want a particular spot, I get up early and get the spot while most are still hugging their pillow.

Re: Catch anything?
Hog, I believe you are one of the truly good guys from your postings and all the helpful reports you give during springer season and such. I average close to two days a week on the water somewhere per year so I've seen a few things. That's the problem with being an addict though, you have to deal with some pain to get the pleasure.

Re: Catch anything?
Only time I keep a secret is if it is a small river or hole that can not stand the pressure. If I have a fish in T-Bay or Col I am going to tell you. If someone wants to know what I am using and they are not rude I will tell them. I think the skill is in the fisherman not the bait or the place. My .02 worth.

Re: Catch anything?
I will always tell the "old- timers" the absolute truth, even colors or lengths. 90% of these folks have definately put in their time.
Other than that it's a toss up. It's pretty tough for me to sneak fish away from the bank when I leave after another has joined the hole. Generally if I'm whacking 'em, I'll help the person who isn't "on- fire" out a little. I just like to see fish come to the bank.
On the boat it's a little easier to be sneaky, and it does pay off. Especially if you're out there daily. I've seen a few boat spots turn to completely overcrowded overnite. Loose lips bring ships, that's been proven to me a few times this year. If I see you daily, I might tell you we got a few, maybe where. If we're in the hogline, I'll try to be sneaky with the lures & leads etc....I've put in some time, and so have the others that fish with me.
Success comes to those who wait, learn, fail, relearn, fail again and never give up trying.
Again the old timer exception comes into effect here too. I never lie to gramps........

Re: Catch anything?
My grandfather had the best sense of humor on the river.....
He'd troll up next to somebody, or up to a hog line, or someone drifting past us w/ a fish on etc.... He would say "Are you getting any?"
and if they said:
yes - "I'm glad to hear it, so hows the fishing?"
of if they said:
no - "to bad my friend, so hows the fishing"...
I always got a great chuckle out of that one.
You know it always amazes me when i read about people finding the "fishing" community so untolerable.. sometimes it makes me think that maybe its that person bringing the worst out in others.... I've met so many great people on the river - yes many of them drive me nuts - but its not so much them as a person but their ignorance to the techniques that drives me nuts...so w/ a little helpfull hand soon they wont be driving me nuts..... just the other day i pulled into a hole on the trask.. kinda a new spot for me on that river and the other two boats were old timers of such whom both new each other... they gave me that look - like why are you here. I went a long my business... i over heard one of the guys mention he wished he had some coffee... I chimed in, saying my first words of the day as i was by myself - "if you've got a mug i've got the coffee"..... long story short - 20 mintutes later i've hooked into a 28lb mint hen... and he comes down and nets it for me.... all three boats had a good day - and now when they see me they give me a big hello... My point is this - people will respond to you as they perseive you a lot of the time. But of course theres always A-holes

Re: Catch anything?
90% of the time I let someone know how we are doing if they ask nicely. I don't give up too much information though. Last week we were fishing a plug pulling area, there were about 20 boats. We fished our arses off changing colors every 45 min. After 6.5 hours we finally keyed on the right color and hooked 8 fish in 3 hours. Someone cruised past as we were letting a fish go and asked what we were using and I said "plugs". Had to work hard to find out what was going on! I think being nice but not giving up too much info is par for my course.
I like the idea about the Ifish signal if you are catching fish or not. I have had some conversations with people about a color flag system showing how many you caught by the number of flags and their general weight by color.
I like Hogmasters idea of showing the same fish several different times. One time when I was pulling my boat out at a launch on the CR and I had a couple of nice salmon each about 25 lbs or so some guy came running up and asking a bunch of questions. I gave him some general info and he mentioned that those were nice big fish. I told him those were little, we let all the big ones go, you should of seen his face!

Re: Catch anything?
I bank fish 99% of the time and if someone comes by in a boat or another bankie comes down and askes I dont have any problem telling them the truth. In fact I usually invite them to the rock right next to me. If they dont have the right set up thats working Ill usually offer to hook them up with what ever im using.
The only time I dont is if a person is rude to me or if i see that they have been rude to others. Then I still dont lie I just shrug em off.
Sure I like fishing by myself sometimes but I also like to fish with others and see them catch fish specially if its someone that doesnt catch very many or hasnt ever caught one before.
Just my .02

I tell the truth about 80% of the time.
If we got a 8 pound fish it goes to 10. (20% lie)
If we got 4 fish it goes to 5. (20% lie)

Re: Catch anything?
Except at a secret spot (and there aren't any), I feel that I can tell them what, where, when and how, give them the lure, cast the thing for them and 90% of them won't catch a fish anyway. Most people ask because they cannot believe that there are actually fish in the water. Am I threatened, heck no. If you're good enough to actually catch a fish, then have at it.
I don't like it when people lie to me, so I don't lie to others, even strangers. I may not tell everything, but I don't mind sharing basic information. If someone thinks it's ok to lie in certain situations, it just makes that person a liar.

Re: Catch anything?
I will go with smj and Crabbait on this one. However If I,m out on the river from the crack of dawn and working hard to catch fish, tring everything I know and have and just finding out what will work ,I will say a few or yes and maybe not tell how many. I have found that this way the same person will offer the same info when you see them next. They might go up or down river and stop just to tell you where and how they caught fish.

Re: Catch anything?
Rick-
Fact is, most of the steelies and summer nooks I saw die this year were at the hands of two old guys whose combines age was probably 160 or better !!!!!
Forget Jeff, I wanna be like Mel and Dave. Fishing at 5, done at 1. Everyday, regardless if it was the best or worst day of fishing. That's my goal. To get to that age, and still have to itch to catch another. Weekday in, weekday out.
My brother tagged along on Saturday for his first fall fishing experience. Third pass his rod buckles, yielding his first fall hog. 36 1/2 hen. Not mint, but very bright. Green Pirate scored a nice little 10 MINT Chrome buck as well. I'm sure you know the rest of the details ALL EGGS went to the boat  ( nice marbles)
Just another day of bass fishin....

Re: Catch anything?
I believe honesty is the best policy! I always tell the truth the, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Everybody is out there to catch fish and have a good time. I always think it is more enjoyable and pleasant when there are a lot of people around hooking up. If the person asking is an obvious jerk, I just don't tell him anything or tell him where to go! But I will never lie to them!!!

Sometimes its not what you use but how you use it. I mean that in a fishing way.. ha ha. Really two people can be using the same thing and one person will do better that fishies it better. Just something to think about. Good luck to you all this fall and please be safe.

Re: Catch anything?
Hey, it's just fishing. But I try to make my practice consistent with my policy. If I need info, I'll give info. No such thing as a free lunch. One of my ex-partners used to interrogate people on the water like they were on 60 Minutes or something. If anybody asked him, either he didn't know or he didn't speak English.
Don't want to give it up? That's fine. Just don't be a hypocrite.
And when I really want to know something, I'll have my girlfriend ask. Everybody's nicer to her. They probably feel sorry for her 'cuz she's stuck in the boat with me.

Re: Catch anything?
I will always try to give an honest reply when asked. Some people may get more detail than others. If the asker looks like a considerate fisherman I'll fill him/her in. Sometimes I just don't like the looks of people and give them bumb scoop. Is it wrong? Maybe, but it's my choice who I'll talk to. I've seen too many people pull in to my favorite holes and start killing dark hens for eggs, start making calls on their cell phone to everyone they know with a fishing liscense, or whip out the buzz bombs. I owe it to old friends, relatives, and acquaintances to at least try to keep the pressure off places they've been fishing for decades. I will always help the beginners, if they can be helped.

Re: Catch anything?
I seem to remember when I asked Roy how he was doing he said 3 in the boat. Found out later he was referring to 3 skunks in the boat. One was Gizmo and he should have put that one back in the water
It depends on when, where, and who it is. If the fishing was good then they might get information. So far, I have'nt had to lie yet.
Rick, are you calling yourself an seasoned fish educator?
