Re: Memorial Service for Don Larson
Thanks for posting the information Pete. I will be there.
I was out fishing yesterday, and after giving up on the coho at Lady Island, we went up to a sturgeon hole that Don had turned me on to. I thought of Don often while we were fishing. It seemed like every time I injected a smelt with Don’s secret scent concoction that he shared with me, I took a moment to reflect upon memories of fishing with him. When I would notice those first couple of taps on my rod, and remove it from the holder, I thought of how Don would do that funny waggle with his right leg just before he set the hook. I will miss those days of fishing with Don in the future, and cherish the memories of days past.

Re: Memorial Service for Don Larson
I understand that an autopsy was scheduled, but I don't know what the results were. His body was found in the river on the 22nd downstream from where his boat was found on the 15th. It seems likely that he drowned accidentally. There is a profound lesson in Don's tragedy. Regardless of skill, experience or familiarity with a body of water, there are risks and dangers that may be greater than they seem. We all owe it to ourselves, our families and our friends to exercise safe practices and consider our risks. I know I've been rethinking just about everything about my boating over the last two weeks. It's been a sad, introspective time for me.

Re: Memorial Service for Don Larson
Me neither Jen, that's why I looked for it and brought it back up. Perhaps a bad choice of words.
Pete, I had a feeling that's why you might be looking into inflatable vests.
I was out on the bay last week and stumbled in the boat and it was all I could do to stay in it. My first thought was to look and see if anybody was around to have helped if I had needed it. Nobody, I was over in the west channel. I was only in seven feet of water but am always aware of the possibility of hitting my head and going unconscious as I go in the water. Second thought was about Don and what must have happened to him. Third was to reach down and put on my off-shore inflatable. Fouth thought was what if something had happened and how my wife would feel. Sat down for awhile, had a sandwich, and reflected on the beautiful surroundings.
Peace.

Re: Memorial Service for Don Larson
DFB, you guessed right.
The service is this afternoon.
The service was good. Several Ifishers attended. Ifish was mentioned in the service and several posts from the memorial thread were read to the assembly. On the back of the program was the following:
If you’ve gone fishing or crabbing with Don, you likely know his version of a famous Boston chowder. On a brisk day on the boat, he’d break out an oversize thermos of piping hot chowder, pour everyone a big cup, and be at peace in his world.
Don’s Favorite Recipe for New England Clam Chowder

[*]3 8-ounce bottles clam juice
1 pound russet potatoes, peeled cut into ½-inch pieces
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
3 slices bacon, finely chopped
2 cups chopped onions
1 ¼ cups chopped celery with leaves (about 2 large stalks)
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 bay leaf
¼ cup all purpose flour
6 6 ½ ounce cans chopped clams, juices reserved
1 ¼ cups non-fat milk
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce[/list]Bring clam juice and potatoes to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
Melt butter in large pot over medium heat. Add bacon and cook until bacon begins to brown, about 8 minutes. Add onions, celery, garlic and bay leaf and sauté until vegetables soften, about 6 minutes. Stir in flour and cook 2 minutes (do not allow flour to brown). Gradually whisk in reserved juices from clams. Add potato mixture, clams, milk and hot pepper sauce. Simmer chowder 5 minutes to blend flavors, stirring frequently. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
