Default Marty Peterson's strange catch

I understand that Marty Peterson had a strange catch near Bay City the other day. <wink> <wink>.

Does anybody have any more details?

From what few details I am able to gather, it appears that Marty has singlehandedly (Sp?) created a new fishery right here in our own back yard, so to speak.

It seems that Marty "somehow" managed to "catch" an Albacore Tuna somewhere near Bay City on Tillamook Bay! Rumor has it that another "albie" spooled him during one of his fast trolls back to the Oyster House!!

Well done, Marty! Since very few of us have been overly successful with Fall Chinook this past month, your "discovery" may lead to a much needed upsurge in the Tillamook economy.

Think of the possibilities. Tuna jigs costing upwards of $10.00 each. Wire leaders at $5.00 each. Live bait wells in every sled. Oh, to be in the Sporting Goods business and have a store in Tillamook. This is mindboggling.

Oh, and by the way....

Just remember what P.T. Barnam said many years ago, "There's a sucker born every day" .

Don't be one of them.

Heard that it's a verified 15 lb. albacore.

Congrats, Marty!

I heard a similar story about 5 years or so ago on the Alsea. The Kozy Kove marina clerk said that an Albacore tuna was caught in tidewater.....say What???? She said that a regular that was trolling for salmon had landed a tuna. There was supposedly a couple of witnesses. Yeah right... and guess what? There was no picture.
Another urban fishing legend at it's best!

Ever had that feeling?
There's a story here somewhere, I just can't quite put my finger on it.
Hmmm....

Bill,
Don't pull too many hairs out looking for a story. My theory is that these things only pop up when the fishing is slow and not much else to talk about.

As soon as you say it will never happen, it does. Explain how "Bill" got up to Bonneville Dam

In '81 or '82 I saw several albacore jumping just outside the mouth of the Chetco River.

OK, this may have gone on long enough!!

As Paul Harvey says, "And now for the rest of the story"....

As I heard this story, Marty was at the Bay City Oyster House, right on 101, big white building, and purchased a few cups of clam chowder for his clients. (It was a cold day, nice thing to do!)

Apparently they had some tuna and Marty bought one for his home smoker. (Remember, this is what I heard!) I don't know Marty, but I suspect he has a less than serious side. As another guide passed by Marty's boat, he playfully said, "Hey, look what we got right on Tillamook Bay", or something to that effect. And he added, "We also lost another one".

So, it was all just a joke, as if you didn't already know.

And now you know, The Rest of the Story.

It's true, it's true! ... NOT!

Rusty has the story quite right, After stopping by Pacific Oyster at Bay City for some of the best chowder in Tillamook County and after landing a 30 pound nook  I decided to purchase a whole tuna for the smoker. After we got back out on the bay another guide came by and said "how ya doing?" I said we got a nook and this (as I pulled the tuna from the bag of ice it was in), you should have seen the look on his face and clients faces! We told only one boat and before long people were approaching us from all over to see our tuna that they heard about!!!

It was a lot of fun!!!

Truth: We had a tuna.
Urban Legend: We caught it.
Truth: I bought it.

Good fishin' everyone!

-Marty

Tee Hee....
The AP IFISH SERVICE:

Guide Marty Peterson Lands Unusual Trophy

For release October 22, 2001

Tillamook, Oregon
Fishing with spinners near the Oyster House at Bay City on Oregon's Tillamook Bay, professional guide Marty Peterson of Gone Fishin Guide Service landed a fish that suggest we may be entering another el Nino season. Trolling a rainbow spinner for Tillamook's renowned Chinook salmon, Peterson hooked a powerful fish. After a 25 minute battle that had Peterson chasing the fish nearly a quarter mile he netted a 27 pound Albacore Tuna. Albacore, normally found off shore, occasionally migrate inland when warmer water bring their feed with it. Peterson's fish was noticed by several other guides who switched to zookers, cedar plugs and hoochie skirted squid plugs. The fish was quickly cleaned and sent to the smoker. Party at Marty's!

Gee Whiz Marty - I liked this thread better before you told the truth. Glad to see Jennie is trying to bring us back to our fantasy world with the last post.
