71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
Just confirmed with Jot's Resort...........71.5 lbs, caught upriver yesterday at the Clay Banks. For those of you who aren't familiar with the hole, it's the first big deep hole above tidewater. Most often completely covered by spey rodders in prams dragging sinking lines and small flies with long leaders; read that as you will.
Bill M. If you read this, and want to pursue, the number to Jot's is (541)247-6676.
Scroll on down to Jennie's post!!!

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
Just to be clear here, Last night TR started this thread with the following:
"I have heard an unconfirmed report from a very reliable source (my mother) that a 71.5 pounder was brought in to Jots. Can anyone confirm?"
Thus my reply:
Yes, TR I can confirm!
That is your mother.

I could tell by her pants!
That would be one HUGE hog!!

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
True. 71 and a half pounds caught on a fly at Clay Banks (about half a mile from my home).
It seems the hook WAS somewhere NEAR the mouth area, but come on...a 70-plus fish close to the end of his life cycle isn't going to be chasing any little fly.
Now I'm not saying it was snagged, but it's a fine line between a "line-bump" and an honest bite.
Just my two cents. And that's probably all it's worth.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
Leaky W - I don't know about this Rogue 71 lb case, but I can confirm that big chinook sometimes do chase down small flies in freshwater. A few years ago I was flyfishing for searun cutts in tidewater of a small lower Columbia trib using a spruce fly on about a #6 hook. As I was retrieving the fly out of the deep hole into shallow water a huge chinook of about 40 lbs came up from the deep chasing that fly and inhaled it in about 18" of water virtually at my feet. I was fishing with 3# test leader and it took that fish only about 30 secs. to strip off all my line and then break me off as it went behind a piling on his way back out to the big river :depressed: .

Don't mind Hogmaster. It's just, well, the rubber room is getting to him and the straight jacket is a little confining. Other than that he's a great guy.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
C&E....No problemo, me and Hog duked it out to a draw via e-mail and we've both retreated to our corners (Ha Ha, serious joking )
As for the scale validity, it's a commercial grade scale, which appears to be well-cleaned. They reset 0 before each fish, and are quite picky down to the 1/4 lb.....they give out buttons for 30, 40, and 50+ lb class fish(personal experience, over the last few years, 29.5 and 29.75 didn't get me a button :depressed: :depressed: ). I would be almost certain it's much better than "within 20%", but, I can't give you an exact figure.
As for the lining of the fish via sinking lines and long leaders, well, I just don't have the experience one way or another. I get bashed quite regularly here for plunking corkies, so I won't go down that road.

Thats one big fish. If there scales are as accurate as most of the lodges I've been to, you can usually take 20% off of what they say. Even at that 58#, dang nice fish.

This chinook weighed 71 pounds, eight ounces and was taken by Grant Martinsen of Grants Pass on a fly he tied himself on a size 8 hook.
Here's the best part ... he was using a fluorocarbon leader that tested just over seven pounds.
I've got a picture coming & will post it as soon as it arrives.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
For those who dought that salmon will EAT a fly, I say your opinion does not count for much. I have been fishing fall salmon on flies for over 20 years and yes they will take a fly just like they hit wrapped or naked quick fish, spinners, steelies, corkies, eggs, sandshrimp and the like. Soooo don't rush to judgment too quickly or you will show your ignorance. Just thought I would enlighten those who don't have a clue,
Cheers,
Dennis

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
Yea, I use to watch some guys on the upper trask fly fish for Fall Salmon...didn't look like to me they were taking it like a kwick fish. These guys spot the fish and basically are feeding the fly right in front of the fish, do the fish ultimately take it OR does the fly just go down the shoot ... a little of both from what I saw.
Raises a question though, how many fly fisherman fish blind for fish, <OR> are drifting their flies right on the fishes nose? Or do you cast the fly like a somebody fishing spinner, eggs, etc...
This fish being caught down low in the river doesn't sound like he was being casted to though.
I doubt I am showing my ignorance raising such observations cuz i leave that in my tackle box.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
That fish should have been let go. Look how overweight it is! Darned thing probably will taste like a cross between overused oil from a deep fat fryer and Tillamook ice cream. Look how fat it is! It's way out of proportion for its length, so it probably got tired out pretty quickly during the battle as well.
He'd have been better served catching the steelhead that I catch. Those post-spawn fish are lean and mean, not all fatty like that pig.
Folks, how can we let our salmon get so out of shape? What are we doing wrong as anglers to cause such an epidemic?
Susan Powter needs to get involved, and now.

I really hate to tell you this, but I handed the rod off to that guy. You know how it is, you are out there just one right after the other, pulling fish out left and right, right and left and you look over and see this poor guy without even a line bump. ya I hooked that fish and handed him the rod.
I'm really jealous!
That's one nice fish
Man that's one nice fish. I wonder how long it took to land that small trout.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
So, in the original post, it says the fish was hooked in an area normally fished by fly rodders. Someone also told me today the fish may have been caught on a fly ... I sure would like some confirmation of that. If this fish was caught on a fly, that would elevate this story to truely magnificent levels.

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
The fish WAS fly-caught. The all-tackle fly record for Chinooks is about 63lbs (from memory -- off another board), meaning that it's a world record if he did the paperwork on it. (Over at www.danblanton.com I believe someone said it was caught on a 15-16lb leader.)
If it's any consolation, that fisherman didn't have a muscle in his body that didn't ache the next day -- and he didn't mind at all!

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
I hope to all get out that he did the paperwork. I'd love to see that record posted!
BTW, I went to that site, Snaggles, and it says he got it with a 7 pound test RIO leader. He must have fought that thing for hours!
Aching body ... tough!

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
Gus, that is a very good question. When I fish for Chinooks on the Trask, Wilson etc, it is when the water is dropping (just a few feet of visability) so to answer your question, I am blind casting but I do know that the section of river is holding fish (years of experience). Yes I do know that there are some that target darkies but thats not me. By the time thay get up to the sapawning grounds I'm not interested in harrasing them. I would be all for closing the upper reachers of all coastal streams to protect the spawning fish.
As far as long leaders and sinking lines, to take a fly down quickly, you have to use short leaders (no more than six feet).

Re: 71lb\'er from Gold Beach...it's CONFIRMED!(with picture!!)
It's a very deep hole, the fish can't be seen, so they aren't being casted to. I've tried a few times over the years to get in there with a bobber/eggs, but they've completely taken over the hole, oh well, not a lot of places you can get a 8ft pram into!!

First off, thanks to Bill Monroe for getting the whole story ... see the pic on the front page of the Oregonian ...
... but I don't see the story credit! Shouldn't it say "credit: ifish.net news service"? And what about the "finder's fee"? I hope the check's in the mail. Looks like Ifish scooped this one by about 72 hours!

I get at least SOME of the lot, for having ifish, The Rogue gets the most, and all the other ifishers get a take for.... for just being here.
We will all be rich!
Shall we give any to the fisher who landed it?
Nah.... he got his prize.

Unnnbelievable Fish!!! I hope that this fish is mounted...It's truly a trophy fish and a testament to this year's great salmon run. Congratulations to the fisherman who caught the monster and congratulations to the ifishers who brought us the news!

You know, if you went fishing and caught 2 fish with a combined weight of 71 lbs, that would be a very good day.
Unbelievable!
