Waxed Cotton?
Does anybody have any waxed cotton, not oilcloth, raingear? I've been looking for a shorty hooded rain coat. I've used Columbia Frasier river rain coats, but the durability of waxed cotton looks nice. Thanks, Mike

Re: Waxed Cotton?
I am not sure if the Filson products are waxed or oiled. I do know they are top of the line when it comes to water repellency  They now have a few products in camo. The only Filson I own right now is a hat, I am stating from the head and working down.

Re: Waxed Cotton?
I've owned a few pieces of waxed cotton clothing, mostly Filson hats, and a couple of friends of mine have had oiled cotton coats, I think by Barbour.
First, the hats. The Filson hats have a nice stiff brim, and shed water nicely. However, my head still gets wet from either sweat of seepage - I can't tell. They keep the rain off my glasses, and guard my ears from wayward flies well. The worst problem with them is they shrink. Once you get them good and wet from sweat, they will shrink at least one size, and sometimes two. I have thrown away three of these hats over the years because they got too small to wear.
On the coats, I have only picked up my friends' coats, and boy, are they heavy. One of the guys has had the coat for about ten years now, and I never see him wear it. Neither of my friends who have these coats wears them on long trips. When it really counts they've either got on gortex or Helly Hansen. So that's how the guys who actually own the stuff vote, whether they'll admit it or not.

Re: Waxed Cotton?
I've worn Barbour suits and I agree that they are really heavy. I think that I have seen some lighter weight material (tin cloth type?) that may foot the bill. I have tried on some oilcloth that's lighter weight, but I just couldn't deal with the smell, thinking that I would get some of on my hands and then my gear, wd-40 ok, but not the stink of oilcloth. I'll continue my search, I think that Bill Herzog had on of these. I should call him and find out.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Waxed Cotton?
I own several Filson garments. For durability they are the absolute best, however the waxed cotton does not breath well at all. The hats (except the wool lined) will actually condense water vapor on the inside and drip on your head. For rain gear, Gore-Tex is by far the best, especially with wool underneath.

Re: Waxed Cotton?
Thanks for the replys. I never thought of the breathablity issue. Well I will probably check them out as winter steelhead would be the only time that I would want to use it.
thanks,
MM

Re: Waxed Cotton?
I have several pieces of gear from Filson, hat, coat, pants, fishing vest, boots and such. They make products in several weights and they have a line of waxed/oil cotton just for us anglers made from their shelter cloth. Water proof and briar proof. I love my Bush hat. The key is to keep adding more wax to it if it starts to leak. I really like the guide fishing vest that I have. They are not cheap, but their gear is the best that I have found.
