Freezing eggs in a jar
Has anyone ran into any problems with freezing eggs in a vac-packed jar?
Thanks!

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
I fished tidewater this year with eggs I put up in 2001 and did extremely well. The eggs needed to be redried but fished fine. We are talking cured eggs right?

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
We've been doing it that way for the last 3 or 4 years and no problems at all.

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
Cool.
I have plenty of nice tight silver salmon skeins that I cured and vac packed whole in plastic bags, but had some jars in the fridge. I could dump them in a bag and do them the way I have the others, but figured I'd try to place the jar in the freezer.
I 'm pleased to hear that it does work fine.
Thanks! I'll do that now.

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
Nope Shannon they won't work.
They just don't fish right.
It has something to do with the osmosis process.
Send them to po box 962 and I will dispose of them for you.
You mean they got late silvers up there in Alaska?
Seriously though you must have caught them awhile back being as how everything is so much earlier in Alaska.
Where did you catch them?

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
I was catching bright one's down on the kenai in Sept. I have my batch in the freezer up on top. I've had 8 jars hanging in our fridge. I can use quit a bit of eggs in an outing, so I stock well and never freezer burn them, or they never go to waste.
Silvers arrive in Anchorage the 2nd and 3rd week of July. Close your eyes and cast.

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
vacpacked eggs in glass quart jars will freeze for a couple of years and will be just fine. Remember to label the jar and not the lids if possible. I also found some white plastic one piece wide mouth jar lids that are great once you thaw the eggs.

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
Remember to light a piece of wax paper and drop into the top of the jar befor you put the lid on. This will use up all the available air, and the eggs will fish fine for years to come.
Last January I was snooping around in the freezer and found a jar of silver eggs that I had put up in 1999. They looked ok, so I snuck off that afternoon down to the 205 bridge on the Clack, and banged a nice 7lb hatchery buck by just drifting eggs.
Peace, Tom

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
Fishbait, where did you get plastic widemouth jars? That seems like the perfect solution. Do they vacpac and seal just like a glass jar?

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
Ron,
I vacpac with the regular two piece metal lids. They have the rubber ring to seal. Just use the plastic lids on the river. I got my lids at Bi-Mart, they usually have the regular size but you have to watch for the wide mouth. Could probably request them. Come in a box of qty 8 I think.

Re: Freezing eggs in a jar
It depends a little on the jar. I have had standard canning jars break on me, due to expansion of the eggs as they freeze. This was is in part due to my packing the jar very tight because I don't have a vacuum packer for jars.
I have had great luck with Adams brand peanut butter jars.
