Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
I live in Washougal and know of one good place to buy shrimp, that is Jimbos on Hwy 14. All the shrimp they had was soft & stinky yesterday, and today new shrimp has not come in yet. So, that brings me to a few questions. First, is there any other places in the Vancouver Wa, area to get good shrimp? The next question is, will eggs work as well for diving out of a drift boat and would you use a double hook set up or a single hook.
Any advise welcome. THANK YOU!

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
I have used eggs to run behind divers on the Clack last year. It worked fine. I always use a double hook. Just makes me feel better, more confidence. Let me know how you do with it.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
They both will work fust fine, but IMHO I do prefer shrimp for steelhead and eggs for salmon. I would say 20-40% preference, have caught both on both. Seldom use double hook here as fish usually just swallow the bait when fished behind a diver.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
Use borax eggs for steelhead not sulfit based eggs. Steelhead don't like sulfit eggs to well.

Don't know of any other place to get sand shrimp. I always drive to Jimbos to pick them up, seem to be the most reliable place around here.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
Where in the world has anyone heard that steelhead don't "like" sodium sulfited eggs? Back when the Salmon River was open on Mt Hood we just killed the summers on eggs cured with sulfite, have faith in your bait and you will catch fish.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
GI Joes in Vancouver sells Sandshrimp. With all the storms comeing in it might be a little hard to get any right now.I've never bought any but maybe east county sports sells them in Camas ???
(the old camas sporting goods store)they've moved up the street one block.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
I'm with Fishbait on the single vs. double hook thing, also agree with him on sand shrimp vs. eggs. I'm seeing lots of double hook set-ups on the Lewis...don't think it's necessary, myself.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
As as a back up keep frozen bait prawns in your bait freezer. I use peeled tails for drift fishing and sometimes behind a diver.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
crawdad tails do work well.We catch them in Timothy lake every year just for steelhead.I put beau mac dye on them, mmmmm Yummy looking.Crawdads are some of the best bait as far as I see, natural bait.Makes a nice small offering.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
What periwinkle said, but here is a little bit more detail, I only use the tail, I save the head just incase I start to run low, I have used both double and single hook, I like the double when the water is moving I hold my bait on better and is better for a whole sand shrimp. I also like the hot n tots over, brads divers. I use about a 5-6' leader to the hot n tot. I also use the one size up from the smallest spin glo, I like the matte orange with white wings, I also some time use two small corkies minus the spin glo. I have tried eggs but shrimp as always produce over eggs. Also here is a little tip, I use 2/0 owners cutting points in winter and 1/0 needle points in summer, and when back trolling, keep your drag loose, so the fish can run a little bit and make it easier for you to get the pole out of the holder. I have landed much more fish after loosing up my drag. This winter I am going to try out those strechy rubber things lure jensen make.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
What size Hot n Tot or Brad's do you guys like? I think there are three sizes that they make.
Also how long of a leader? Someone said 5-6' is that really how long you use?
What about Jet Divers? size 20?

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
I have never usd a leader longer that 2 to 3 feet. As for the diver size I don't know what size they are.

Re: Diving bait, eggs or shrimp?
For bait I like a 5-6 foot leader. I just like that bait away from the plug. For worms I like a 3-4 foot leader. Then the plug can impart more action on the worm. As for the plug size, the medium size works best for me.
