Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Okay you sturgeoneers the time is upon us for the second annual STURGEON CHALLENGE. Saturday January 10th is the day. Remember last year the prize was the dreaded BATON of shame for the poorest showing? Ugly Green was the recipient of this prestigous award and is most aggressively seeking a replacement BATON HOLDER for 2004.
This is a time to put your teams together for some fun and fellowship with i-fish buddies and budd-etts. The only prize is the BATON and the satisfaction of a day on the water. Fish wherever you wish in the Columbia system and post your results with some friendly competitive photos and measurement here on i-fish.
Smack talk is permitted but keep it civil and clean please.
Feel free to use The Rogue's January 1st fish for all to warm up for the Sturgeon Challenge. Some of you will need the practice.
Remember, January 10th, STURGEON CHALLENGE!!!!!! for the sturgeon challenged.
There is no cost to enter other than your pride. You may fish anywhere you want for sturgeon. It would be nice to see some pictures but not required and would like to hear about truthful measurements. You do not need to retain fish to boost your ego or secure bragging rights. Any other questions.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Hey Bernie- I knew there was a reason I started practicing the Smack on ya yesterday on the Dog Board. You bringing the bananas for bait? Make sure your team brings you lotsa extra barf bags! Littering in the fresh water can get you a $1000 ticket you know! Not that we would take pictures and turn you in now!
These guys think you are an anchoring disaster. Wait till I drop Miss B in between 'em at KP! Muahahahha!
Actually not sure Miss B will be running. Haven't got a schedule for the head job yet . Working on a back up plan for Team "D-Oh"

I had a freezer full of smelt until I discovered my freezer got unplugged back in the summer (one of the 90+ days, yuck!)
Lost smelt, herring and springer

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
The Hog Hunter would potentially like to participate...
Are there going to be Ifish teams or what
I say launch from Cathedral & meet back at a certain time and be somewhat organized...
It can be simple with teams of 3 or something...
What do you guys think????

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
I would like to participate but have never fished up there. I have my own boat (disclaimer: it is open and flat on the bottom) and would welcome someone experienced in fishing there. I am going to try to make the "event" on the 1st and would again welcome someone, if not I will just follow the flotilla.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Is this what we're fishing for? These big nasty dinosaur things are everywhere. Every time we try to bottom-fish for some tasty bullheads, we end up with these instead! Last year I hooked one on a bare kwikfish, and one even attacked a little Dick Nite Spoon during shad season. Heck, if all we have to do is catch these shark-lookin' things, I'm in!
This is my girlfriend's kid (AKA LanceTheFisher on ifish).
Okay, this is a horrible photo of me - makes me look toothless and even fatter than I am - and the fishy is a little small, so he got to go back in the river - but this was a fun night of fishing right at dusk last June.
I know what everyone is thinking, but we can actually bring one more guy our size without exceeding the weight limit of my boat!
Bump...Bump...Yank! See you out there!

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
KHH, the whole idea is to have teams of i-fish members getting together and having a hoot. Like I said we can fish anywhere in the river. Last year the bulk of us fished Kelly Point due to high winds in the gorge. So be flexible if you will.
Those of you that have extra seats be sure to post them. Heck, take a sturgeon virgin with you. Last year I broke o'l Spooled in on a keeper fish. He was impressed with the lips and utter beauty of sturgeon but probably will not be having one mounted anytime soon.
So select you teams, make it known you want to play and need a ride or whatever. Just get out there and have a good time.
Mel, we will leave some room for you and your bloody Mary smelt.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Yeckkkk! No smelt in the bloody Mary's Bernie that Cream of Wheat stuff floats around on the top and then gets stuck between your teeth!
It's squid, and it's gotta be Kosher Pickled Squid. Adds that nice little bite (get it-hehe) to the Bloody Mary.
Right Pete?
Hmmm.. maybe a little chunk of Eel would be tasty too, but NO SMELT!
I think I caught my only fish that day last year on the Bloody Mary Squid! That Sturg looked a little groggy after he sucked on that squid for a while but he seemed pretty happy? Watch out Marie! Gunna Market this killer sauce as soon as my patent app. gets approved. Could be tough to get early in the morning though- sold only in OLCC stores, order early!
And Pete will gladly share his bait brine....I mean Bloody Mary.... receipe with anyone who wants to try it. No zipperlip carrot stuff for Team D-Oh!

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Hey Mel
If you've got an open seat I'd be more than happy to play 'deck hand' for ya.
oh BTW, that smoked Tuna from the last TA meeting was WONDERFUL!!!
I wish I had a scanner so I could show some of the pictures from when I was out @ the Fishery on Halloween. I spent 2 1/2 hours going head to head with a very large oversize when he decided that he'd had enough. That fish ran through my 65# tough like it was butter. Ask Buckfin, he was there to help, and just about got yanked out of the boat when that fish decided to leave the scene. HEEHEE!!! what an adrenaline rush.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Julie- Pretty sure my boats not going to be functioning in January. I need to tear into her and get a valve fixed (at least that's what the preliminary diagnosis is right now). Looks like I'm riding myself this year.
If Miss B was up and running I'd be glad to take you though. You probably should try to get an open seat asap, they'll fill fast cause this is the:
Fishin Junkie Smack Talkin Long Winded No Catchin Buncha Whinin Snot Nosed Short Pants Wearin Think They Can Fish Amateurish No Payoff Bun Freezin Girly Man He Woman Cracker Jack Mickey Mouse.... Tournament of Tournaments!
Oh- did anybody explain THE ONLY RULE (this is all in fun) to you Sillyolgirl?

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
I'll take the Minaki out if it's fixed but,,,,,,
It's new skipper and boat is still a Sturgeonly
challenged after 2 failed attempts in 2003 and one in 2002. 2-1/2hours and zipo.
I always hear "OH I'll take you out this year on my boat and show you how to do it" well I'm tired of all the talk.

Sillygirl, the only rule is to have fun...PERIOD. Photo proof and some measurements would be nice but no absolute. Just fun and games and a little friendly competition and smack talk. Here's an example:
Waterlogged could'nt catch a cold in the snow and rain let alone a fish in a trout farm.
Got the idea Julie?

Bernie, Nothing like going in circles in the fog ....... "which way did they go, which way did they go George?"
Maybe you need to take a course in river navigation and how to read a compass. Do you even know what a compass is?

If the steelhead rivers are blown I will be there and will have an available seat. If they are not, well, have fun. I will wait to see the forecast and if it looks bad I will post an open seat several days in advance.

Shane, one thing you'll learn is that pics of days gone past mean squat. What counts is what you do on game day. Bring your carrot, lettuce, broccoli, and your prune juice. Your gonna need it.

Team "All Inclusive" will be there. We are still working on the menu but if you smell bacon frying you may be anchored down wind from us. Our plan is to blind you all with a freshly polished boat so you can't find your way, and if that doesn't work we'll just have to take pics of our limits of fatties.

Sombodys fibbing - those pics 5 Cents posted are on Multnomah Channel - Just up from Coon Island, I do know that spot.
I will play this year - can you win the baton twice in a row?
Who wants on MY team?

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
C&E yep! You want the video
UG if I am not mistaken that "is" the lower Willy, right? I think it is more fun if everyone tries to figure it out for themselves. Let me know if you want some help this year

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
And now a word from last year's CHAMP !
Talked the talk and walked the walk. Caught when and where it counted. "SUPER-T"
Hey 5-Cent, here is your target.
Catch and Eat releasing his entry in the last Sturgeon Challenge. Hey Bernie, it is the Sturgeon Challenge not the Goldfish Challenge.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
This sounds like fun. I'm in.
I will have to get a team together.
Hey Airborne, we should hook up and bring some military tactics into this game.

Fishalot,
Don't think Turkey Baster, TackleBusted, and all the other pet names I adopted last year will be participating. Let's just call it my effort to keep peace in our Ifish family and I'll leave it at that. Hope you guys have fun....

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Oh sure!!! Anyone can catch keepers, but can you go out and fight the wind, rain, cold, waves, and catch NOTHING! Not even a shaker. That is a real fisherman, one bait all day! None of this casting, rebaiting, releasing fish, not for me! Lets see you do that!
I did misunderstand last year........I thought it was a tournament for the sturgeon challenged!!!
This year will be better, I'm SURE I can catch at least one shaker and use two baits!
And yes Waterpuppy, I do have smelt this year, have not had a shower in at least a month? Is that smellllty enough?

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Nickel - its "sort of" the lower Willamette - its near the lower willamette - its a darn good sturgon spot (I like the barn hole downstream better) - but I always thought of the lower Willamatte as the mainsteam from the St Johns bridge down to Kelly Point.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge Jan 24th
Talked to Degner and we are up for the Challenge.
Still working out a team name and will post it soon.
Might have an open seat on Degners new boat (Beaver fans need not apply  )
Although we would make an exception for Hogmaster that is of course if he is willing to get ****** out with some fresh Duck gear  . What do you think Hog I have some real nice Lighting Yellow shirts and Hats that would look good on you?

Looks like the Sneakin' Out crew might float that day. Might as well let C+E enjoy life sittin' behind the 'puter now, cause that's all he's gonna get outta this floaTILLA.
Lookee here, this is what we found in Shane's hole.
