lost rod
Hey just a question for all out there.
What would you do if a so-called friend kicked over-board a very expensive rod an reel combo and then refused to even acknowlege the fact?
Votes are now being taken.

Re: lost rod
I would have the friend dive in after it  Just kidding! At the very least I would make the "friend" pay for at least half of the replacement costs!( That is if he wanted another fishing trip in my boat!

Re: lost rod
If you saw him do it, then he denied doing it, and then he refused to make partial reparations, then it's best to cut your losses with the person.
It's unfortunate that friendships end like that, but sometimes they do.

Re: lost rod
if he really kicked it over and denies it i would end any ties until i got an appology and money or new rod. now if you put it in a bad spot and he knocked it out i would settle for less. sorry for your predicament. can i ask where this happened?

Re: lost rod
Its possible that he really is not aware that he did it. If its a close friend, then what is worth more to you, half the value of the rod (if it was an accident) or your friendship. For me, if a friend accidentally did it, I'd be ******...but would just replace it. If he paid a part of it, great. If not, oh well. But on the next trip, he's gotta bring his own rod.

Re: lost rod
I tend to agree with Cool Texan....
The real question is what is your friendship worth???
Most of mine are worth more than a rod & reel...

Re: lost rod
Also depends on the friend's financial situation. If he's got three kids to support, is basically making ends-meat, but is otherwise good person who would pay if he had it, I wouldn't be happy, but I'd understand his actions. If he's a guy who got the best of everything and he's not owning up to it because he's cheap, it's a different story and I might choose to find a new partner. I guess it really does all come back to what is the freindship worth to you.

Re: lost rod
1st) Determine if this person can swim. Dog paddling counts.
2nd) How long can this person hold there breath with a boot wedged in a .........
3rd) Give them the cold water memory refresher exersize.
4th)Ask nicely if they recall what happened to your rod reel combo.
Repeat steps 3 & 4 if necessary
You can't make a person pay for a new combo, but you may be able to influence them to make the right decision.

Re: lost rod
I had a simular incident with my fishing partner of 13 yrs. We were fishing from his boat, end of June, crossing a very thin bar. He chose a route that would put the boat upagainst a protruding stump. He told me, "you might have to fend us off that stump". Well, it turned out the only way to do that was to take the chance of crushing my hand(between the boat and stump). I didn't fend off the boat, and as a result, the boat was punctured, slightly. My friend threw a "snit", and we haven't fished together since.
I would like some input from those of you who read this, positive, or negative. :depressed:

Re: lost rod
Well, haven't heard friends side. And there are many other possibilites of how the pole when over. Did you see him knock it over? Or did you just notice it wasn't there and blamed him?
All in all, you have to ask what the friendship is worth.
As for hurting yourself, or a booboo to the boat... been in a similar situation with someone and I always tried to save the boat because if it sunk, so did I. But many of my bruises were unnessasary because he could have handled the situation differently.
Remember, boating/fishing... it is supposed to be fun.

Re: lost rod
Fishing rods come and fishing rods go, but GOOD friends (ought to) last forever. I have lost friends to war, drunk driving, helecopter crashes, illness, and Me being stupid. I think the price of a rod and reel is paltry compared those I've loved and lost.

Re: lost rod
Tailslapper, that's not a very engaging "fish tale" ... how about trying once more - this time with gusto? Certainly you arrived at Ifish through a shared love or appreciation for this sport. No doubt you had some wonderful experiences that brought you to the conclusion that a very expensive rod and reel combo would add to your enjoyment - let's hear about one of those experiences? You tell me yours and I'll spill about the fly rod I swore I'd never buy, OK?

Re: lost rod
I have been the friend on the other end. I broke a friends rod when I went to step out of the boat. I went to take a step and then was about to lose my balance and stepped back into the boat right on his rod; a custom wrapped Fenwick... ouch. (Since then all of the rods are organized in an out of the way spot at the back of the boat). I paid for the rod and my friend was very forgiving much to my luck. Of course this was something where I was clearly at fault and I was willing to recognize my mistake.
I think if you confronted him and he wasn't willing to say "well if you really think I did I am willing to pay for it" then you need to question how much he values your friendship. I am in agreement with everyone else that you need to evaluate how good of a friend he is for yourself.
Tailslapper, I am also noticing that this is your first post. Is your identity an alias of someone else on the board and you are keeping yourself anonymous? Or are you a new member? If you are a new member make sure you post a fishing story about yourself in keeping with tradition.

Re: lost rod
Uh.......welcome aboard, Tailslapper. How about a little more introduction than a request for a verdict from the ifish jury. The jury is balking because they have not heard the whole story and becuase you have not furnished a fishing story!
As for expensive rods............if the rod were left in a position to be kicked over the side who's fault is it?
As for your friendship, you are in the best position to determine what your friendship is worth.

Re: lost rod
I guess it depends on which one of you was neglegent. Was the friend not paying attention? or where you? I used to fish with someone who you had to constantly watch your rod because he would pay no attention to what was going on. After I witnessed this in a boat a couple of times I made darn sure where my rod was when fishing with this person. Saw him break someones favorite Lamiglas and another time let someone elses rod fall overboard. He replaced the latter rod and reel to his credit but don't know what happened with the Lamiglas. Darn near got my GL3 1143 once and that clued me in that I needed to watch him.

Re: lost rod
Hey Tail....welcome to the party...I did that to a buddy's BRAND NEW 320GTI and Tiger stick....in fact a sturgeon took it while I was taking a pic of my wife holding a fish!
Anyway, have your "buddy" check with his insurance company...seriously. I was with Allstate at the time and they pick up the whole bill with no deductable! It fell under my homeowners policy because at the time I was borrowing the gear!
Good Luck!

Re: lost rod
hey now, you know the rules. as a new member, you need to post a fishing story here. how about a long, detailed account of the day this incident happened? i can't really pass judgement on someone with the little information you've provided.

Re: lost rod
Tailslapper:
Tough call. I've been on the wrong end of that scenario. The broken rod wasn't expensive but it had a lot of personal history, and the grip was wrapped with the skin of some long-lost-but-notable bass. :depressed:
You said "so-called friend." Was that a"heat of the moment" description or wasn't it really a good friend? If not, your relationship may be toast. :depressed:
There are a batch of issues which have been touched upon, from ethics to personal family finances. I'm acquainted with all of them!
Good luck.

Re: lost rod
I let a diver hang over the edge of Johnsons boat and the bobbing action of the wake tipped the whole combo into the Columbia.
I had the line in my hand, so no big deal, grabbed the rod and rinsed off the reel.
I would have replaced it, if necessary.
If a friend did that on my boat and offered nothing, he's no friend.
I definitely would take into consideration his financial situation. If he offered to replace and I knew he didnt have the cash, I'd let it slide.
The key here is honesty and intention.

Re: lost rod
Tough one to call the decision has to be yours. I just went thru something comparable to this. I took and friend, his girlfriend and her brother out crabbing for three days. I was up front running the boat most of the time. I kept telling him to be careful when pulling in the pots. I had to do this more than once. Well when I get home I am cleaning up the boat and notice about 10 scratches in the paint about a foot long. They are'nt coming out I just bought the alumaweld formula vee this year brand new. I have been out crabbing before with friends and not even a scratch. A couple of days after getting back he called and I told him about it no apology. We have talked a couple of times after that and still no apology he has brought it up each time we talk saying I cant believe it got scratched. Then he had the nerve to say he wanted to go again. That is when I told him not in my boat by your own boat and I will pull the pots. I am not ending a 15 year friendship over it but it wont be on my boat. If I were you I would let him know exactly how you feel and if he wants to go again make him bring his own pole or hand him a snoopy pole and tell him that was the replacement you got for the one that was kicked over. So was he being careless or was it just an accident or did he do it on purpose. Where is that story you owe us.

Re: lost rod
If a true, true friend, then look at it as a lesson learned. If not a good friend don't take him anymore and get a cheap rod, less expensive, and you can buy more to lose.....   PS Tell the whole story and nothing but the whole story....

Re: lost rod
I was recently certified as an open water diver and would be willing to recover the fishing rod for my cost of travel and such.if the location where the rod was lost is not to hazardous. the cost of say $50.00 would be alot cheaper than replacing the rod.
