Newport Crabbing
Due to an important morning committment, I had a rare Saturday off from work, so I took my daughter to Newport to do some crabbing. I had taken my boys there on Monday, and we had done quite well. I knew the tides wouldn't be ideal by the time we got there, and sure enough we missed quite the morning. I saw a few full buckets. By the time we started, though, the tide was going out heavily, and there was seaweed fouling everything. We got no keepers in four hours of crabbing. That's never happened to me before! :depressed:
So we spent time walking around the boat docks, looking at the jellyfish, eating candy bars, and just being together. Finally, we pulled up the nets one last time, and called it a day. Stopped off a a beach on the way home and made sand castles. Saw a guy carrying a big salmon away from the Salmon River. I had been tempted to stop off and throw in a line on the way over, but was put off by the large number of cars. We did stop at the hatchery and look at the fish. Too bad there weren't any adult salmon in the hatchery yet.
On the way home she listed all of the things she saw that day: two deer, a bunch of jellyfish, a seal, birds, crabs, little shiny fishies, "long seaweed that looked like a rope".... and on and on and on. And we take all of that stuff for granted! Oh, to be five again, with no responsibility, and everything new!
