How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
Hi I'm a new member. I introduced myself in the Salty Dogs section with a story. (March 15th Ocean Salmon?)
I will be going to fish for the first time at Lake Billy Chinook soon. I have no idea what equipment/lures or techniques to use.
I just want to catch and release something. Family Trip...
Thanks

The small mouth bass are the easiest to get. I used to just throw out a worm and retrieve it real slow. This was at the boat ramp on the side where the Metolious comes in. We Buzz-bombed for Kokanee too.

Click on this site and read about fishing. You can stop by and purchase some supplies from them.

Re: How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
My Limit, I have owned property in Three Rivers there for many years and fished the heck out of the Lake. There are several fisheries there including Bull Trout, Smallmouth, Kokanee and Brown Trout.
Trolling Rapala's for Bull's works or anything that mimics a crippled minnow, Trolling deep Wedding Ring with White Corn for Kokanee but don't forget the rubber snubbers they have soft mouths, regular trout set ups for the Browns and the Bass are a mixed bag, Worm Bobber, Rattle baits, crankbaits etc.
Don't forget to get a Warm Springs pernmit if fishing the Metolius arm.
Have fun I'm heading up there next week to fish for a few days.

Re: How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
Thanks for the advise! I only got a couple of responses at first so I got excited and did another post asking for more specific instructions. I did not know if people would respond any further to this one.
I am new to anything other than ocean and river salmon and sturgeon fishing.
Can someone please tell me exactly how to rig up something so I can troll with my two year old son and just catch a few fish for fun?
I'm not trophy hunting or anything. This is strictly a short family day trip of catch and release fishing.
Thanks,
My Limit

Re: How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
Hey Kokanne Killer,
My dad lives near Terrebonne. He has a drift boat and a little motor. I'd like to fish for both bulls and kok's. Where do you launch, and how far of a ride is it to the good kok and bull trout places? Also, is there a preferred time of the year?
I've fished a lot in Central Oregon, but mainly the high lakes and not LBC.
Thanks for all the input everyone!

What happened to one of my responses? Somebody else responded here with a detailed explanation of trolling and it is now gone?
What happened??
It was a real nice posting.

Re: How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
For kokes and bulls, you'll want to focus on the metolius arm. There is a nice ramp at Perry south campground. It's a bit of a drive, and the road turns to gravel a little ways past 3 Rivers rec. area. Unless you are a member, I don't think you can use the 3 rivers ramp. Those are the only 2 on the metolius. For smallmouth, try the bridge areas on the deschutes and crooked arms. Lead head grubs, crawdad pattern plugs work well here. If you have crawdad traps, this area is pretty good, just don't throw them out too far from shore as the water gets deep really fast as you can tell from the walls of these canyons. No crawdadding is allowed on the metolius arm.

my limit,
For just straight trolling, here's the standard.
Go get the standard trolling set up. This includes the plastic trolling rudder, and the flashes. usually 3-4 attached to some wire. attach
a snap swivel to you line, then a 3-4 oz. keel sinker, then a snubber, then the trolling set up.
after that, attach a standard wedding ring spinner
set up out of the package, and add a piece of white corn soaked in anise oil. I like red and the green colors they make. For rainbows, a piece of worm. A small spin-n-glo in hot pink with
chrome wings works great too. Small red gami bait hooks attached. Also a good alternative, is a small apex in hot pink or fire red. Since the fish will be near the surface, I'd start with 3 0z. and go about 10 pulls and work from there.
Troll anywhere in the lake, look for other boats.
I like a slow "S" pattern which will vary lure speed and draw strikes, also allowing you to fish slightly different depths. look for strikes as the lure raises up and speeds up. It's getting away from them and they hate that. When kokanee hit, reel in slow but steady. sometimes you can get them to just follow the gear in, till they see the net and boat. A long handle net helps, as they tend to thrash and jump near the boat and have very soft mouths. For bows, small spoons like the cleo or others, or spinners work great too. Just make sure to use a snubber and a good swivel if using any kind of spinner while trolling, or you'll have a nicely twisted surprise
when you reel in. also, the use of convnetional reels helps avoid line twist.
Good luck and I hope your little one has a blast with his old man.

Re: How to fish Lake Billy Chinook "First Time"
I usually only fish for Dolly's in LBC, but the Kokanee can be fun. Perry South is a poor ramp, with limited acces for parking. I put in on the first ramp on the Dechutes, and run up the Metolius arm. Faster than driving all the way around. Try the 10mph deadline on the Metolius arm with "firetiger" Crippled herring, usually works for me.
