Default Trolling herring with mono vs braided line

As I get more and more into fishing, I am gradually getting more rods and reels for various types of fishing. But I only have one salmon reel. At several springer clinics I've attended, the guides have said that they use braided lines for fishing Kwikfish but 30 lb mono for trolling herring because more give is needed. This season, if I use my reel with 50 lb Tuff line for Kwikfish and for trolling herring, will the Tuff line result in a much lower success rate for trolling than if I were using mono?

Ive trolled herring with braded line my entire life and I love it. I like how it has no slop and you can easily tell the bottom from a strike. I have never had a problem at all with losing fish. just gotta set the hook soft so you dont tear the hooks out and keep the drag light. Good Luck

you'll get no stretch with the braided, some guys run a shock leader to get some forgivness back, i run a light action rod to make up the mo stretch, once you experence the head shake without mono your never gp back

I have been wondering whether the braided line would scare away fish (more visible)? I have tuff line on all my rods except for my new salmon rod, which I put mono on. I am just curious what people think, I have no proof and I am not sure I ever will. But I put mono on to see if I can get a catch rate difference bewteen the two.

Used it for years, just dont set the flippen hook.
I use 50 # tuff with 30 # ultragreen mono.
Loose drag, let the fish take it off the reel, and just lift firm.

I talked to Terry Mulkey about what he was running and he prefers suffix mono for his main line with long rods.Just my two cents.

I have always used tuff line on all my salmon rods but, lately I been wondering about the singing that comes from tuff line running thru the water.

I am not sure but I dont believe herring that are alive put out that noise lol I tend to notice the noise more if I am in a heavy river current for springers then when I am trolling but its still there.

you guys got any thoughts about the noise good or bad ?

My only advice is to make sure you educate your buddies if you are giving them a rod with braided but they are used to mono. I was on Tillamook bay this year in Oct. and the other guy in my boat hooked up. He lifted the rod firm..... "good" I said..... Head shake from the fish. Then he unexpectedly reels down and hook sets HARD. Breaks the mono knot. Of course he blamed my knot. Educating your fellows is critical to avoid hard feelings. Sometimes even then they don't listen.
