Default merc 4-stroke

I am lookin at buying a used 40 hp 4 stroke '03. Its a manual start ( no electric starts on the '03 40 hp I'm told) and it doesn't have an alternator so I can't hook it up to charge my battery for the DF. The dealer said no alternator is made available for this model. I have always had a charging system before, so how long do you think it will take to drain my battery just using my DF? I don't want to buy a motor if I have to charge my battery every time I go out. Any one else have this problem?

Hmm... I bought a 03' 40 HP Merc 4 stroke last year. It has electric start and alternator to keep the battery charged. Maybe it's just the manual start that doesn't come with an alternator?

I have a 1999 40 horse 4 stroke manuel start and stevens put a charging unit on it when I bought it and it works great.

I've run a small 4 stroke for several years while running a depth finder off the battery. If you're not running a motor off the battery it should provide power to the DF for several days. I have a quick conect recharger I plug in every few weeks just to keep the battery up, but I also run a 55# elect motor alot. Never have had a problem running just the DF.
