Default Tips on fixing dogs with hard mouths

My dog is getting a very hard mouth. I thought about wrapping chicken wire around a bird and throwing it for him. Does anyone else have any advice or other tricks

No clue. Never been an issue for me.

"Chew on it and I'll kick your butt" is about all I have to say.
But seriously I'm not the best person to ask, I'll kick his butt for dumping on the Delta Waterfowl's Booth/Blind at the OWF.
I have high expectations for my boy, and vocal about it.

Have you tried denial? It worked for me.

My uncle used to take 3 wire brushes and wire them back to back then wrap a skinned duck around it... I was pretty young but I know he says it works.

Force break to retrieve. Don't stick anything in his mouth that might hurt or injure him.

I ended up getting a hard plastic throwing tow with hard knobs all the way around it. My pup never had hard mouth after that. and no chance of injury

Has your dog chewed up birds or is he/she just chomping on toys/bumpers? My dogs handle bumpers much differently than birds.

If he/she is truly damaging birds then, like mentioned above, you're best bet is to force fetch and hope it goes away.

I'd also recommend investigating some of the retriever forums to see if you can get some good ideas.

Your best bet really is to 'force fetch' your dog, either by yourself or with the help of an experience trainer, as it really isn't a simple process. But there are all sorts of resources available on the subject, from books to dvd's.

Also, please have some respect for your dog and don't try any of the barbaric chickenwire-type deals. Directly or indirectly, the 'hard mouth' your dog has is likely a result of something you've done, so punishing him just isn't right. Train him (and yourself) and give him the opportunity to do it right.

Until you have trained him how to "hold" correctly, any way that he does it is right...hard, soft or not at all.

You may not have to go through the entire FF process, but teaching hold is a great thing for all dogs. Gloved hand and then to a pop can works good. A little pop under the chin every time that can makes a crinkle and he will learn fast.

Until you teach him, he doesn't know.

Another vote for force fetching the dog. The process will take care of any mouth issues. There are several programs out there. I prefer Evan Grahams Smartworks program, but any of the good ones will do. Good Luck

This is the right thing
The dog must be trained to hold before moving to force fetch.

If you have a Frozen Bird use it. if you don't go out to a farm some where and ask to shoot a couple of pigeons then freeze them. Use (BB Gun)

I've had 3 dogs that wanted to chew or crush everything and the frozen bird worked the best. just keep rotating out the bird because they do thaw quick.

If that doesn't work try all the above that doesn't involve the dog having something in its mouth that could potentials hurt it.

Good luck. should be an easy fix
