Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Started at the Salmon, got in the brush at 4am...could've showed up right at fishing light, nobody alongside me 'til then....oh well! Oodles of fish rolling until about 10minutes before "first cast" then they disappeared. Few line bumps, just a couple caught on corkies and a couple lost on bobbers. 25-30 boats SPENT THE NIGHT in the Barn/Bray holes, according to one boat that came through. YIKES!!!
Gave up on it about 8 or so, went to PC. The place is LOADED with fresh fish!! The corkie fishermen caught 15-20 fish before the incoming started cranking....then it turned to a "fish-on fish-off" snagfest Bobber fishermen did pretty good on the point, spinner guys on the sandbar started doing well once the incoming started. All fresh, chrome fish.
Problem #1.....several fish snagged by the corkie fishermen, and fought to exhaustion, dragging in backwards!! I loudly voiced my advice about simply pointing the rod and the fish and "popping" it till it came off....the people next to me said,"He just put on new line, he doesn't want to loose any!!" I left the hole after that comment.
Problem #2.....the boats had the ENTIRE lower end of the sandbar blocked off to the bankies. They were anchored across the river, running Kwikfish. That was disgusting, and absolutely WRONG. There is really just that one GOOD bankie hole on the entire tidewater....boats, STAY OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!!!! Fine being on the other side, throwing back in the hole, but blocking it the way they did was absolutely BS. If there's anyone reading this that was in that bottom line blocking the bankies, well, honestly, you p**s me off.
No fish for me, but at least I didn't have to net any, either

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
rogue, in the past i have done the k-fish thing below the ramp, we always went down below the ramp far enough we were out of everyones way. if it is done right everybody can enjoy it and catch fish. the group of guys has changed alot in the last 5 years, not many of the good old boys off the point or in the ramp. seems like alot of greedy middle aged tweekers. thats why i fish out of my boat down there.

Yes, I did notice it seems to be a different crowd than the old one, especially on the point and below.....

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Rogue,
I was hoping to make it down there this last weekend, but I had a suprise birthday party for my wife planned all ready.
Thanks for a great report . It lets me know what to expect and not that I havent been in the middle of it before, but that its worth the hassle when the fish are in. Even when there's someone standing on my shoulders.
As for those guys fishing kwikfish...It doesnt look like a bad idea, but it sure messes it up for the guys fishing on the sand bank. So many guys so little room :depressed:
Hope to meet some of you down there to share the experience with.

Heading over there tomorrow, come back on Wed. It'll be my first trip over there, so hopefully I won't have any troubles like Rogue did. I'll post if anything happens. (Which it won't, not in my boat anyway!!! )

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
The Rogue,
Yes, the Kwikfisherman moved the line way too far up this year. People have been Kwikfishing there for years. In the past, they would hogline below the sign near the bottom of the parking lot, below the sandbar, and catch just as many as now (if not more). The boats didn't bother anyone. However, when I went to Kwikfish there a couple weeks ago, people were practicly anchored off the ramp. Come on boys, lets back it up, so all can fish. If you think about it, you don't want your Kwikfish in the hole, you want it in the shallower water downstream of the hole, catching the fresh ones coming in before they get to the deeper water.
As for the corkie snaggers, STOP IT! Corkie fishing in tidewater is mostly a snag fest anyway. There are definately legitimate biters on corkies, but the percentage is low. You look at the percentage of fish snagged on bobber fishing, and it is way lower. I think it is also called flossing. If you are going to fish, try to catch biting fish. If you switch to bobber or spinners with a single si-wash, you would snag very few. Be careful, because I know that the State Troopers are out there with there binoculars. I hope they give all you snaggers a ticket and ban you from fishing in Oregon. I'm not saying to stop corkie fishing, but don't set the hook on every line bump. You can tell the difference between an in the mouth bite, and a line bump most times. Line bumps are just that, a quick "drive by". A legitimate bite on corkies is tug, tug, tug of a head shake.
One thing I have noticed also, is that corkie fisherman try to plunk corkies off the sandbar, when the bobber fisherman and spinner fisherman are already working the water. Get with the program, and plunk over by the restrooms, and bobber and spinner fish off the point and sandbar.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
I was at PC today and caught a nice chrome bright sea lice covered #20 buck on a spinner. Also netted a #42 buck for a guy that was plunking corkies. I looked very careful at the fish before I netted it and the hook was clear at the back of its throat! It was definately a biter! I saw about 30 fish caught today and we left right at high tide.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Fished the Salmon today, and saw alot of people (corkie fishers) setting the hook way to many times. Rogue had a great point in an earlier post that the quick twitch or slow pull down( then back to normal) are not biters. It seemed today that the trend was to set the hook regardless. (None of those guys landed a fish by the way). Myself being new to the river I am glad I was forwarned. If I hadn't seen it on ifish I would probably be one of those guys constantly setting the hook.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
BassMan-
Cross the bridge over the Nestucca as if you were going to the beach at PC. Instead of turning right toward the beach, go straight ahead (look to your left and you will see a small parking lot: bobber fishing). Turn left and follow the signs to the Bob Straub boat launch. Watch and learn.
Fished from above Hanneman's to Woods on Saturday. Great pogey bite but no chinook. A lot of fish rolling Friday at high slack, fewer on Saturday. Boat problems kept us off the water 'til well after daylight . Very slow for bobbers. Saw one fish hooked and lost. A few on spinners (saw two fish on that were obviously foul hooked).
Frost on the ground and bugling elk Sunday morning. Cooler weather and water to come should help the bite.
Twenty-five cars parked above Otis on the Salmon. Gotta be crowded down there.
Crabbed Newport on Sunday. Two third of our limit for the two of us. Nice sized crabs and a sick boat. I know what I will be working on this week.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Well, well, well
I guess I owe a fishing story since I am new to ifish and that was part of the deal so lets see....well I will share the one that really stands out in my mind, it was last fall I was sitting at home in Hubbard and I had the chinook shakes so I said what the heck I grabbed my eggs and headed to the boat ramp in PC, I got there around 6 in the evening " it was really a last minute thing"
when I got there I was a little disapointed though cause there was no fish on the bank and there hasn't been a fish cought since the morning so I said to my self well I came this far might is well get my line wet so I slapped on a globb of eggs and chucked it out past the point I waited around one minute....SLAM, bobber down, fought for about 7-10 minutes and landed #30 lb hen tagged her put my gunny sack over her and I was back in the water 10 minutes later, once again I kid you not, I wasn't in the water more than a minute...SLAM, another bobber down!! I hooked in to another #30 lb hen I sware it had to of been her sister they were twins.
I was back home 4 hours later and #60 lbs heavier.
I only been salmon fishing for 6 years but that day I felt like the grand pubba of salmon fishing, I wish all my days were like that.
so there you go that's my fishing story and I'm sticking to it
To the good days
Bobby

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
BassMan-
You have got to invest in a map. From 101, follow the signs to Pacific City. At the one flashing red light in town, turn west. Cross the Nestucca and follow previous directions.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Brian, I saw about 15 fish landed on bobbers in about an hr right around low slack and many more lost. Second bobber to hit the water was hit not more than a minute later before most of the bobbers were even out yet. I even chucked a bobber for awhile but couldnt make myself stick to it. I went back to my spinners and picked up my buck. There was the good bite right around low slack then it was one here one there until the high when we left.
Ill have some "lucky" spinners for ya when you get here! This year it is the red beads so far and last it was the green!

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Slow in the Woods area on Sunday. Tossed bobbers, chucked & trolled spinners. Saw 4 fish for about 100 people ( 30 some odd boats anchored). Quit before 1:30.
Heard of a 50 # 'er checked, along with the shark bite. Glad I don't surf !

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Was at PC today, and I counted carefully, and only 9 were caught in the morning low outgoing tide. Keep in mind, I couldn't see the pogey hole, but out in front, 9 were caught at the low part of outgoing up until slack tide. I am not sure how that 9 grew to 15, unless maybe you are counting fish on.
There were twice as many people fishing today as there were on Saturday. It was too crowded on the point. Lets see, 30 people fishing the point, and 9 landed, that's only .3 fish per person - not real good odds.
I thought it was rather slow.
High tide there were only 4 caught on the point. I watched one guy catch his first fish. He was shaking with adrenalin. It was awesome to see. He's hooked for life.
Fish On!

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
MasterCaster,
I stand corrected, my apology. I saw that you posted yesterday around noon, so the assumption was that you were there in the morning.
I've gone five times to the coast, and have not landed a fish. I've hooked one, but lost it, although Saturday, my two fishing buddies that came with me each got one.
Last year, I banked at least one every time I went - 9 fish in 8 trips - not too shaby. I hope to get this skunk smell off of me real soon, although I can't get over there for a couple of weeks, because of plans.

Re: Salmon River, PC ramp report......
Finally, someone is readin' in between the lines. See ya at the ramp.
Pete went today, but I haven't heard from him, but I will post the report when I do. I'm stuck in my office working for the next two weeks. I won't be able to go until mid October. I feel green all of a sudden.
Come up and introduce yourself, as I can't make the connection yet.
By the way, fishing is lame for me so far. Five trips, 1 on and 0 landed. Pete got one Saturday. There have only been a couple of fair days. Most days are lowsy. I might try another river, based upon reports on ifish and from a co-worker.
