Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
Bonneville Pool will re-open at the end of the month. Still 280 fish to catch there. Want a sturgeon? Go get one!
PS You can still catch all you want below Bonneville. Just can't keep. Still fun.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
C'mon man do you want their to be any fish in 10 years, I sure would like my kids to be able to catch these fish. You get 6 months more than 48 other states. Their still fun to catch and release no need to eat everything. 'Good luck with future trips.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
"We" over-harvested our 80% of the allowable catch for the last 2 years. "Our" fish are harder to count as not eveybody tells the truth about how many we keep. "They" have their fish counted at the buyers so they can't lie. "They" stayed within their 20% share, "we" didn't. THAT is why "we" can't and "they" can.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
I don't mind keeping within our quota, but if you want to start counting we's and they's maybe we should throw salmon in too.
I don't think its right to net any rivers until you offer a full sports season. I feel lucky, (with sturgeon) the largest user group gets the largest share. The way it should be. That does not happen with salmon.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
I'm not a fan of gillnetting. But that is the world we live in at this time. This thread is about sturgeon keeping. Invader, I'm sorry that you can't find the need to go up the road 45 minutes to catch the sturgeon you need so badly. As Oncorhynchus pointed out, you at least have the option to fish for and keep sturgeon. If the Bonneville Pool is too far away, you can keep sturgeon in the Willamette River and all of the coastal rivers too. Whining about the Columbia doesn't make any sense when you have all the keeping you want within a couple hour drive from home.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
While I dont always agree with the closures, I LOVE my sturgeon fishing.
I really look forward to the winter months, and sturgeon fishing is one of the reasons.
If we were allowed to keep the fish as we chose, I would probably lose my beloved Sturgeon fishing all together.
There is nothing wrong with releasing these fish.
I get a good feeling actually when I release a pre-historic fish and that fish has an opportunity to be caught again, or spawn and give us more Sturgeon!
As stated you can still keep them in the Willamette, and there are plenty of good holes to fish while the Columbia is closed. I got quite a few keepers out of there last year.
Give it a shot under the power lines near Freds Marina, at the 80' hole in front of Shennanigans, or the hole near St. Johns bridge. . You'll get keepers. Then when the Columbia opens up you'll be ready to really go after them.
Dont "give it all up" man.
Going out for catch and release still beats mowing the lawn!!!

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
Invader, you are absolutely right! You do need to give it all up. Pease give it all up! Convince your pals to give it all up also. Sell your boat and gear NOW, before there's a glut of boats and gear in the want ads. Find a new hobby, Golf, yah! that's it, that's the ticket. I'm only telling you this for your own good.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
If we have to give up a couple months to keep the fish in our river then thats what we'll have to do.Canada fisherman are only catch and release on sturgeon we still get to keep a few.
On the other hand you will NEVER get me to believe that all the sturgeon that the gillnetters get are counted too many people have seen otherwise and there are just as many crooks netting as there are catching with rod and reel.If everyone would just catch their limit instead of cheating and getting two punchcards or simply not entering the fish on their card maybe just maybe we wouldn't be in the fix we're in.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
If you're concerned about the Sturgeon regulations, you could always attend the ODFW commission meeting 10/11. It is on the agenda.
After attending a couple of these meetings, I've found that the Commissioners really appreciate respectful, constructive comments and suggestions.
ODFW Commission Meeting October 11
I highly encourage folks to engage in the process. It has been very rewarding to engage with the ODFW.

Re: no sturgeon till the end of november!
I've been to the sturgeon meetings and the bottom line is that the Bios forecast a 4% drop every year in keeper size sturgeon.
More people are fishing for them than in the past. Where did all of these people come from?
I'm gonna miss those nice days in Sept. and Oct. up river in the Gorge(Cape Horn to Beacon Rock)when sturgeon fishing/retention is at its best. We do enough catch and release enough fish during open retention anyway, so why should we waste time fishing without the anticipation of bagging some of best eatin' fish around? let's hope late November will provide some good action in the Gorge.
Please attend the meetings this October and voice opinions. The next 3 year plan won't be as nice as the last 3 years I guarantee you! :depressed:
I would also like to see more representation of the Gorge fisherman at the meetings.
