Default WD-40 on RODS

Ive used WD-40 to claen my rods for some time now. In the last week I've had to take back 3 of my IM-7 S because the secound giude up from the reel came apart the insert came out of the guide. GI JOES replaced them with out a word but we were trying to figure out what happened and the only thing we could come up with is the idea that maybe the WD-40 desolved the glue. Has anyone else had a problem like this ?

WD-40 is a solvent based lubricant, that's why it is recommended not to be used on bike chanis etc, it will dissolve and remove organic compounds such as grease. The epoxy on your rod is an organic compound, not sure of the solubility, but I would recomend against using WD-40 for cleaning ANY fishing rods or even on any plastic lures for that matter.

Use hot soap and water. Soak the rod in warm water to soften egg gunk and stuff like that the best you can.

I have also used a kitchen cleaner that is water soluable. Spray it on and let it sit for a few. wipe with a wet rag and rinse it really good. Then wipe it dry.

I have a piece of PVC pipe with a cap on one end. Fill it up with warm soapy water, put a section of rod in for a while, take it out and give'er the once over with a o'cello sponge. Shine like new!

Same size guide on three rods in the same location? Sounds like it is a problem with this particular size guide, and not a glue/WD40 problem. I have seen several of these rods where the tip top ring was the problem, but I never noticed a glue there - it looked to me like the ring was pressed-in.

Personally, since I like these rods, I would just get a replacement guide and wrap it on.

Hey G2Fish,
I learned something along time ago and thought I should share.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to use WD-40. If it moves and not supposed to--Duct tape! Gald it all worked out for ya though. Next time bring it to the shop and we'll pressure wash it. Sorry, I had a great day!!! I hate to spend all my days doin river re-con. Tough job, but someone has to do it.
Happy Fishn'

Stevo is right on the mark. Its a pretty good solvent & will disolve alot of materials.

Don't recommend on rods.

Bought a GI Joe's rod for my son for Christmas last year. Same problem, before it ever hit the water. Did NOT use WD-40.
