$13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
That’s right, Sports fans.
A $13503.14 silver salmon was caught on the Willamette tonight just above Meldrum bar.
It worked like this:
A guy across the street from my work had a really nice 22’ 1997 Willie Predator in his parking lot for the last month and kept lowering the price on it. It was in plain site out my office window every day. I looked at it the first time but decided if I was going to spend that kind of money that I should get a new and/or windshield sled. So I did lots of "fishing" (and yeah read the infamous "North River" thread), emailed lots of people (including Pete) about their Sport Jets (SJs) and after a bunch of research decided to keep the Red Sled. A new boat with kicker and Optimax SJ was going to set me back nearly 30 K by the time I was done, it wouldn't fit under a low overhang in the back of my carport where the sled lived so the rest of my carport would be taken up by it, and I realized the primary kind of fishing I like to do (backtrolling) is not best done with a windshield boat anyway. So, for the few days a year I can get out to the ocean I would be compromising fishing by myself on the Clack across the river from my house. The open feel of a tiller sled is so much nicer when trolling and fighting fish in my view. As long as a boat has a top for anchoring in the elements it can work. And to top it off Pete commented that he wished he had a prop for the ocean anyway!
But then the price dropped so much on the Willie I just decided to go for it. One of the things that clinched it for me was the fish scale I found on the big motor. A very good sign! Worked out the deal and drove it home Friday night.
Anyone who has or has ridden in one knows the Dory is sea worthy but one wet SOB in chop. I really wanted to move to a dryer ride and one that could fish a few more guys comfortably. But I knew the Red Sled had value and figured it wouldn't last long and it didn't.
This is testimony to the power of an ifish classified: . I sold it in less than two days and ONLY had that ad on ifish. Never even got a for sale sign on it. I was going to put it over at FMS in OC where I have sold a couple of prior boats, but I got 4 phone calls and 8 e-mails between Th afternoon and Saturday morning. First guy who came to see it bought it for full price. He drove it Saturday morning and by the time I got back from the Beaver game at 10PM he had gotten a cashier's check and drove it home.
I guess I sold it for too cheap, but I am comfortable with what I got out of it. No muss no fuss is worth something. I could have asked more and taken less with a lot more hassle. But I really did like that boat too. Fishlessinoregon got a great deal!
Ok, so now to the fish part. On Sunday Reel Dick and I made the inaugural launch and shakedown cruise. We ran up just a bit from Chinook Landing and spent a couple hours on anchor. That worked fine, but since no one was catching, we decided to trailer it to Clackamette Park and put a little trolling time in. Mid afternoon on Sunday was not the time to be there, but the kicker worked like a champ so overall the shakedown was a success. Even managed to scratch it at the dock.
Tonight I decided to fish in the “back yard”. Got home from work and scooted to Clackamette. Just Maxine the wonder dog and me. Had the boat launched and was fishing at 6PM.
At 7:35 it happened. Down goes the rod! Can this be? Yes it can be! I play the first fish for my tenure of this new boat. Had remembered to extend the net handle and the current was anemic so it was a comparatively easy fish to solo in a 12 pound finless buck. SCORE!!!!!!
So, I figured a gallon tonight for the truck and another for the kicker (I live right by the ramp), and an hour and ½ of serious fishing and the sled is bloody. $1.57 + $1.57 + net cost of buying and selling the two sleds and this fish was worth $13503.14. From now on fish will only cost the price of gas and launch fees!
With what I will save on the next one I can by a digital camera!
Hogmaster.
PS – 7 or 8 boats, one takedown (mine), after the sun went behind the hill.
Tiger striped Orange wiggle wart
Ainse oil, but that was when I started – probably no scent left
Not too fast or slow, up from Meldrum
There are no biters in the Willamette
PPS – The new sled needs a name! Suggestions are welcome.

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
Hog I saw you launch and I darn near asked if you were an ifisher cause I saw all that empty space in the boat and I just hate to see a guy fish alone  thats a dandy boat at a smokin deal. I saw one fish caught at the point of the gravel bar at the bowling alley drift and I didn't touch a fish . Congrats on the fish and the new boat. If ya need a seat filled I'll be fishin just about every night after work As for names I'm not sure but your moniker is cool have ya thought about using it?

Hogmaster, I love your logic. You wouldn't happen to be an accountant for Enron, would you?

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
Kiwanda -
Thanks for your comments about the sled. I got comfortable with it tonight. It is so much bigger than the Red Sled it took awhile, but now it is getting easy.
There were lots of flailers at the bowling alley drift tonight. I figured something must be happening there. Much quieter where I was.
You'd be welcome in the sled anytime. There will be times I will fill it but I go on lots of spur of the moment trips too (when I can sneak away) an needless to say will have lots of room in this baby. Had to leave it hitched to the rig tonight because I have a hankerin' about the sunrise. I can't get out after work for a week now between work, the Beaver game (GO BEAVS!) and travelling out of town. If you could get out for a short while at sunrise let me know.
One of my sisses keeps after me about naming it Hogmaster, but I am the Hogmaster! I does sorta work though...

Hogmaster,
That's the way the wife and I looked at it. That first fish was really expensive. After that, they are all paid for.
Congrats on the new boat.

That tiger stripped wiggle wort wasn't the same one you kissed and said you was so lucky in the spring with, now is it?
Congrats on the new boat. Now... what did you decide to name her?

Thanks Bill, appreciated your input too, during my search.
Lynda, no, that was another secret lure that has a big Chinook waiting to take it down. This one did work very well on the John Day last Winter though for big Steelies.
Names are still being considered.

As the impeller turns..... good post as always hog, figured you had won the jack pot.
You didn't waste your cash on season tickets did you?
I'd like some of that 3,000,000$ fish, tasty.
Go Bulldogs, I have some distant relatives from central Cal (I think)

Wiz -
Still too much! It is a boat after all!
Flatfish -
It is Silver and Black and too purty to repaint. Sorta Raider colored - Nah, that won't work I am a Niner fan!
Newt -
Thanks. I'm sure your quackies will be severely tested by playing PCC.
gottaway -
Keep 'em coming!
Met up with The Kiwanda Kid this morning and my communist non-fishing duck son. We put in a little over an hour with no take downs. But it was nice to meet you Mike, and I appreciated your endorsement of the sled!

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
Hey Hog, great story. I really like the part about the expensive fish. Might as well have one really spendy one right up front and the rest on a time and materials basis. Keeps the cost under $100 a pound.
One thing is for sure .. the boat needs a name. The whole deal about first trip, first anchor, first cast ... first fish .... sounds like you got the right boat.
That's what it is all about ... get in the right boat.

I would offer my moniker for the boat name but it may not be appropriate if you fish Tillamook. ;-)

Winning entry? A guided trip of course!
Proton, you sure are calling the kettle black here, doncha' think? I noticed that Clackacrap boat you are trying to dump is still for sale in the classifieds. We know it gets the exposure, and the price sounds like it would be reasonable for a drift boat. There is only one explanation: Too much duck poo!!!
Pilar - You're right as usual - The boat "works"!
barview - Thanks but I don't think I want rocks associated with a sled name, if ya know whatti mean.
gottaway - I think you're right there too. It needs a Hog in it! Hogslave!
And Rogue, come for a ride sometime and I can show you what you are missing!

Hog....I'd take you up on that offer ASAP...except I "have" to go fishing on the Siletz on Wednesday (pulling a co-workers boat for him), and then I "have" to go back the following weekend and fish both days!!
I'd be more than happy to go along sometime if you need a big counter-weight up in the bow!!

Hog heavin is kinda "catchy". I repeat , you got alota' boat there and what a deal! It was a beatiful morning and I enjoyed you and your sons company. I have to admit it was hard not to raz the hosts duck son but no one can say I'm not polite I hope we can do it again some time. Oh, bye the way I forgot to mention the skunky year long dry spell I've been afflicted with. Geez I'm awful sorry. I hope I didn't leave it in the boat Just kidding. Thanks again and let's hear a story! We all love em'

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
Now you guys are killing me!
Rhansme, how could I not have thought about HOG HEAVEN!? So 70's. Brings back some fine Beaver memories. Might be a contender and certainly seems to be gaining favor as a crowd favorite.
******, Hog time works but I am definitely not that furry! Story Dory might have worked for the Red Sled but it is gone.
Kiwanda, I will take it as a personal challenge to remove your stink. It is certainly obviously by the teeth marks I saw on your plug this morning that you have not always had the ick. Let's do it again soon!
Newt - I heard a hot tip for Tillamook. Orange and Black spinners! Try one!!

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
fishybonus!
You may have sealed it! If even you, the champion of the Hogmaster's Mistress title can get on board with Hog Heaven, I think we have a winner!
This has been great! The boat is paid for with the first fish, I owe a bunch of people trips (oh, yeah, like hurt me! I have to take the boat out!), and it has been named.
I will have to work on some professional looking script for it. Anybody got ideas there?
rhansme, you get your choice of seat when you collect! Wild Bill and the rest you can go too. Just write me and we will work out trips.
Now I need to figure out where to place the ifish stickers - Hmmm, wonder if there is any advice on that on this board...

If you put as much effort into fishing as you do in posting 10 page, meaningless posts....you might be more successful out there.

Fine fine fine. But then at least I get to meet new people!
And by the way, the stink is some sort of weird contagian. Never assume anyone is immune to it!
Since the "secrecy policy" has taken effect, I have seen no FRESH pics from either of you. Hope you aren't talking too big fer those immense britches, boys!
PS - I don't fish in Washington much so I write when it is dark outside. Wish I could fish more though, you got me there!

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
I got a nice pic of two fellas holding TWO fish apiece that was taken yesterday...but I'm not going to post it, in order to keep one's identity confidential.
I will say however, that he got his two fish, and lost one on his LUNCH HOUR and returned to work to finish his day.
I know you won't believe it...but I'd have to say the number of fish boated in the last three weeks is really close to 50. No lie. I can think of 34 in 5 trips....and the odds and ends I'm sure add up to near 50. This fall has actually been better than the springer season of 2001 when we did 44 fish in 13 trips.
If you wanna find a "secrecy policy"..keep up your comments.
If you wanna take pot shots at me, go ahead. The fact of the matter is...You don't know me, but those who do, know I speak the truth.
Now. ...go work on your next novel.

Such animosity! Hey, I was just kidding around here. I've heard you are a really good fisherman and really do believe it. Geez!
Those are great numbers, really!
So I like to write and at least some people seem to enjoy reading the drivel I put out. If you think it is

I am certainly jealous of your fishing prowess. Don't know why you felt compelled to get upset, but I hope you get over it.
Have a great weekend. I'd say go catch a fish and relieve some pressure, but that doesn't seem to be working! Maybe you should watch some football!

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
So many posts about Horse...t. And some wonder why some of us old guys are getting frustrated with other Horse...t on the rivers and on this board. How many posts on dry ice or not to dry ice. Speaking for myself here, although it's obvious some other people that are normally the nicest, knowlegable, experienced and most sharing people on the planet are not feeling that way lately.
Another primary reason is that group who "demands" to know exactly where you were, what you were using, exact bait, exact color, exact lengths, without ever leaving their armchairs and clicking mouse.
If this is you, get off your butt and go get some of your own life lessons, experiences, techniques and so called secret spots. Me or you or anyone is no better than anyone else here, but we still have the choice to become tired of Horse...t when we see it.
Lot of discussion, anger and frustration right now about "sharing on IFISH" is the right thing to do and those who don't SOMETIMES, are not "playing" fair or being nice in the IFISH family sandbox. Fishing is like boats, rods, reels, cars, women, men and stereos when it comes to personal choices and opinions.
I've fished the most congested and crazy spots in the State, right in the middle of it all. Over time, one get's tired of someone trying to kill them, low hole them and ruin their cherised fishing day in general out there. Nevertheless, I love Trask Tidewater so much, I'll still go and just deal with it, for example.
If and when someone does find a spot that produces and avoids the crowded madness, who are you to determine and demand someone "share" or tell all about that particular escape from the teaming throngs and all that situation brings with it.
It's also VERY frustrating to have shown someone where and how, then have them turn around and become the "guru" (who cares about gurus anyway) who tells all, shows all, takes all and screws up all. That's why we just move on and find somewhere else to fish and someone else to fish with, get a bit more tight lipped and when it reaches the enough is enough point, fire back and press on, when we can't take it anymore.
By the way, "sucker huggers" aside, don't most plain ole' suckers keep all of our river bottoms cleaned up and are good for the river?
(Another jewel of a post subject)
Enough from me. It's just fishing. I don't care who catches the most, who is the best, who can post as the expert on the most posts and who dies with the most toys either.
Rick

Hey How about that! Thanks for the offer Hog. I would be proud to sail on the Hog Heaven. I have to warn you though, it seems that I am kind of like ole "pilgrim" when it comes to fishing with I-fish members for some reason...hehe..But if your willing to take the chance by all means I would like to go. Just let me know what your plans are and I will arrange my schedule.

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
OK OK OK!!!!!!
You both have fully rubbed my face in the slime of your chinook, with credible and absolute evidence complete with real recent pics!
You guys are the Jedi knights that the rest of us can only aspire to.
I sincerely apologize since I obviously struck a real sensitive nerve when I tried to kid about your catching abilities. I meant no maliciousness.
It is true, I did catch only "one" salmon in my new ride. But I was also out for the first time, not in some not so secret spot below the mouth of the Willamette, but for a short trip where there are a few Coho going by. Frankly, considering that evening in question I saw no other boats catch fish it seemed to me I was doing OK.
Some of it is a matter of priorities, right? ******, that is a great catch. I fished for about an hour an 1/2 this morning in the Willamette again just below the mouth of the Clack, with Formerly, and he had a takedown. Saw no other boated, but heard a couple were lost off the blacktop.
But then I trailered the boat home and went to the OSU game. It was a great experience, BTW. They kicked some serious Bulldog Butt.
But just like all last week, my priorities (and many other fisherpeople here) involved being somewhere other than where chinooks were swimming by. I work at a desk which allows me to make posts during the day, but doesn't allow being gone for hours at a time. If things work out I can sneak a real short trip in and when I do it is close to home by necessity. Others around are in similar traps of existance, or at least that is how they prioritize their time.
I applaud anyone who can get out that much and put them in the boat. But you can't do part two without doing part one. The fact is for many people that even if they could take a long lunch hour to fish they couldn't possibly get to the areas being fished for 'nooks and back and not jeopardize their livelyhoods. And 13 trips? I wish, but obviously not hard enough or it would be a priority.
It is super that some can, and it is great too if the schedule allows it.
Now, I am not claiming by any stretch to have things as dialed in as you fellows do. But I happen to believe that if I were prioritizing my time to spend as much time as you are able to do fishing, I would in fact hold my own. But I don't and that is OK.
So, you guys are the best. But ******, just because the same question gets asked multiple times on this board I don't think you should get too upset about it. A couple of years ago there were literally thousands fewer posters than now. Many of the newer ones have not seen the answers to the questions that are so second nature to the Jedi Knights. Remember the old Axiom of the only dumb question being the one never asked?
And this is an interactive board. Are the people who haven't seen the question asked before supposed to just do searches and never ask the question on their own. Not much fun for them in that.
The board is big and there will be repetitive subjects and positions everyone does not agree on.
Nice fish by the way, both of you.

Re: $13,503.14 Salmon caught on the Willamette!
Again Hogmaster, I could give a hoot about being a Jedi Knight fisherman with britches that are too big. Ain't my agenda at all. It's just fishing to me and the heck with all the rest. I also have no desire to determine who can say or ask what.
You asked, so I showed and telled.
I told you where I was, what I was using and how it was rigged.
Already stated my opinion on the overall situation, and that's all it is, an opinion from an old fart on the dang internet. Real worth? Zero. Catching a limit today? Priceless.
Take care of that Willie boat.
