I'm planning on repainting mine this summer. My son paints cars and is going to do the job for me  . It sounds like the prep work is the most important part.

I have done it a couple of times now.

The first time was a disaster, but I learned a lot.

The second time I used the West Marine alum. paint primer and "Marine" paint. I rolled the paint on and was pleasantly surprised on how the paint "self leveled" any imperfections that the roller or brush made.

I put 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of paint.

I'm getting ready to do my drift boat now.

Just take your time taping and don't rush the mutliple coats of paint.

I'm by no means any sort of expert or even close, just some fisherman that wanted a little color on his boat

To get the first paint disaster off of my boat, I used a aerosol paint stripper that I got from a auto parts store, I believe it was just labeled "Paint Stripper". The stuff took every bit of paint off. Mighty strong, it would start to eat through my rubber gloves after only a couple of minutes of contact. But it worked very well.

I'm not sure if you need to take all the old paint off...

Anyone else have the answer out there

Yeah..What Willie Rower said, but I'd use 400 grit. If you spray it...make sure you use a respirator, or some form of breathing apparatus, as that stuff is way bad for you to inhale.

Surface prep is everything. I used a vineagar (5% acid) wipe down followed by zinc chromate primer.

If the exicting paint is in good shape just scuff it up reall good with 320 grit sand paper. Feater edge any ddep scratches and fill with primer or spot putty. If the scratches go all the way to bare metal then you will need to use an acid etching primer on those spots. After the scratches and chips are filled give everything a one over making sure there is no glossy areas left. Now its ready for paint.

If and when I repaint my drifter Im going to use Imron by Dupont. Its not as glossy as some of the base coat/ clear coat paints but it is very durable and resits chipping and scrathing better then other paints. Imron covers well so 2 coats is all you need. Ive sprayed many gallons of that stuff, Most of it was Caterpillar Yellow or John Deere green.
