Default Frenchman Bar Report 9-17

Nice day to be on the river. I was expecting rain but it was nice and sunny. Not a breath of wind... dead calm. Got out there at 6AM and was fishing by 6:45 AM. Stoped fishing at 12:45 and tired pulling spinners for a while done at 2 PM.

Nothing... nothing... nothing. Around 11:30 AM one hard hit and no fish. :depressed: 11:35 one hard hit and fish on. Fight fish to the boat. Nice nook probably 18 to 20 lbs. Notice that the hook is barely in the side of its mouth. Tell my friend we will only have one stab. He missed, fish sees net hook comes out and hits me in chest. Fish gone :depressed:

There was absolutely no one around. There was one line of four boats about 500 yards upstream and a line of 5 boats 1000 yards downstream and a couple of boats pulling lures here and there. Saw one other boat downstream drop out but they were so far away could not really see what was going on.

Two times in a row now with no fish in the boat I think my dad and his little dog are bad luck!

Will probably be back out on Friday.

Shane let's hope what bit of rain we've had will bring in some fresh fish.

I'll be out Friday with my father inlaw. This will be his first trip on the Columbia. It would be nice to get him hooked in to a big one.

Jen,

Actually I dont. That is probably the problem. I do how ever have "Ifish.net... do you?" decaled across my fish box on the back of my boat. That has atracted a fair number of people to comment and/or introduce themselves.

I will order some stickers and if I take my dad and dont catch fish I will know that it is him and his little dog!

I would like to throw one question out there to any of you that have fished this area for a number of years.... How long does the salmon fishing hold up out there in the fall?

Thanks!

We anchored up about 6ish. Had a drive by around 7:30 ish and another hook up that I lost around 9:30 ish. Finally around noon dad hooked a landed a nice fat hen that went #24 . As we were calling it a day and picking up gear and tiding up the boat I got a nice fat silver about #10. Saw 3 others. Not many boats today(12 or so). Is this the tail end of the run?

In answer to how long the fishing will hold up?

Note that the Bonneville counts are half of what they were a week ago.

However, a few thousand fish a day going by is still substantial. We have caught fish during the last days of September; some guys will work it into October, but by then there are lots of other opportunities for faster action.

EDIT -- Ok, got a chance to check my past records. One of our best three-fish days was 9/24/2000, so we've got this weekend and perhaps one more.

WEll lipripper i am amazed i got out there late and i think i anchored up below you around 11am or so. I was in the Black Sea Dory. The line i was in had nothing all AM. I left After an hour cause there was no current, water is still warm, the sun was out, AND SOMEONE SAID THE NETS ARE IN THE RIVER IN LONG VIEW. BEEN IN SINCE SUN NIGHT AND WILL BE IN UNTIL TONIGHT.. is that true?.

Oh yea for all you net lovers just go up to cascade locks boat ramp right now.
There must be 20 dead bloated salmon along with some native steelies sitting on the BOAT RAMP!!! if you want to back your boat up you literally have to run them over. Its disgusting and immoral what commercial fishing (indian's included) does, all that waste. I for one hope it gets banned forever PERIOD!!!!

"incidental catch is low with the columbia nets" Who the He11 said that?

The last couple of fish I have caught have been showing some color. They still cut brite, but I don't think I will be making any more trips to the Columbia.

Fishin' by this time of year usually gets a bit more sporadic...but you can still have some good days if you want to invest the time. A partner of mine hit two bright #30's today in about an hour, once the tide got moving. Standard spot below [77], standard tactics.

'Freshets' are usually the key to the bite at this stage in the run. (i.e.) it rained yesterday, water cooled a couple degrees and it turned on a bite in the fish that were there, even if they were not so numerous.

Keying in closer to coldwater outlets usually improves your success rate at this time of the year, too. Tighten up on the Sandy, Cowltz, Lewis and Kalama. It's a fun time of year to anchor on shallow sandbars at the rivers mouth and pitch spinners! Your naturaly targeting coho, but the big cruisers don't know that.

I think Highwater has an incredible success story of this nature from a couple years ago.

I was in the line across from #39 this morning at Frenchmens. Sister got a 20#'er and before we could get it in the net, a boat on the outside has landing one also. About the same size. That was all the action we saw for the day When we left about 12:45 PM.
